So a person tried to assassinate Trump

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry Mr. President. We had our shooter in position, had the shot but he flinched at the last second. We killed our shooter immediately and scrubbed his social media last week so there's no trail of evidence.

What we know about the 20-year-old man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — The 20-year-old nursing-home employee from suburban Pittsburgh who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump was a registered Republican who packed explosives in the vehicle he drove to the campaign rally an hour from his home.

Law enforcement officials were working Sunday to learn more about Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to determine what motivated him to open fire on the rally from a nearby rooftop, killing one spectator, before he was shot dead by the Secret Service.

The FBI said Sunday it has not yet identified any underlying ideology or threatening writing or social media posts from Crooks, who graduated from high school two years ago and had no past criminal cases against him, according to public court records. The FBI believes he acted alone.

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, said on social media the upper part of his right ear was pierced in the shooting. Two spectators were critically injured, authorities said. The man killed was Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief from the area who Pennsylvania’s governor says died a “hero” by diving onto his family to protect them.

Relatives of Crooks didn’t immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press. His father, Matthew Crooks, told CNN late Saturday that he was trying to figure out “what the hell is going on” but wouldn’t speak about his son until after he talked to law enforcement. An FBI official told reporters that Crooks’ family is cooperating with investigators.

Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022. In a video of the school’s graduation ceremony posted online, Crooks can be seen crossing the stage to receive his diploma, appearing slight of build and wearing glasses. The school district said it will cooperate fully with investigators. His senior year, Crooks was among several students given an award for math and science, according to a Tribune-Review story at the time.

Jason Kohler, who said he attended the same high school but did not share any classes with Crooks, said Crooks was bullied at school and sat alone at lunch time. Other students mocked him for the way he dressed, such as hunting outfits, Kohler said.

“He was bullied almost every day,” Kohler told reporters. “He was just a outcast, and you know how kids are nowadays.”

Crooks worked at a nursing home as a dietary aide, a job that generally involves food preparation. Marcie Grimm, the administrator of Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, said in a statement she was “shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement.” Grimm added that Crooks had a clean background check when he was hired.

Crooks’ political leanings were not immediately clear. Records show Crooks was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania, but federal campaign finance reports also show he gave $15 to a progressive political action committee on Jan. 20, 2021, the day President Joe Biden was sworn into office.

Anyone who refers to another man as an Alpha male needs to evaluate their life choices.

Whats the term you use when referring to a male who has a presence that puts him at the top of any pecking order?

AP being low key biased again. First paragraph says he was registered republican. The very last paragraph repeats that and said, but wait, he gave money to the Left.

Fact check technically true, but article structure is biased.

He most likely did not donate to the left (at least not the $15 in question).  That seems to likely be a different guy with the same name

The report says the person's name that donated also matched his address which was the shooter's name AND address.

I've seen it reported tonight after doubt was first cast.  It's also just as likely, if not more so, he was on the left and indeed donate to the progressive group and registered as Republican to vote against Trump in PA's closed primary.

Ok looks like I was wrong, I thought the donation receipt only showed zip code but do now see it says address as well and that it was him.

I don’t know what his political lean is, I was just saying I originally didn’t think he was the one that donated the $15.  With the date of the donation being on Inauguration Day, it’s also possible he lost a bet.

Clearly a mistake on the report.  No way a guy shooting at Trump could have anything to do with the left.

What he donated to is "left leaning." His mom is a Democrat, and his dad is Libertarian.

Officer-assisted suicide also might be a possibility here. He had to have known he was going to be killed seconds after he fired off shots.

Dude, he shot at Trump to kill Trump. His dad was a hunter. He probably signed his kid up as a Republican. The guy was not of legal voting age last Presidential election. He was an Anti-Trumper obviously because he tried to kill Trump.

Or maybe he didn't actually mean to hit Trump but did.

There are not enough facts to substantiate a motive.

There are reports that glass fragments hit him.

Anti-Trumper does not automatically mean anti-Republican.

Him being a Republican that is anti-Trump does seem plausible though because any Republican will be able to beat Biden.

It will probably never happen but man if Biden and Trump did a joint message on TV basically saying "Tomorrow we will be political opponents, but today we are asking people to take down the verbal rhetoric." it would be cool.

The gymnastics some are doing to avoid saying this was a “radicalized left wing nut job that attempted to assassinate President Trump after Biden put a BULLSEYE on him”

Is it possible?  I guess.  If I were weighing odds I'd say that's well below 10%.  He could be a Lincoln Project guy I guess.  There aren't tons of those running around though.  The much more plausible line is he voted Republican to vote against Trump in the primary because he felt he was a threat to our republic and he acted in this homicidal way because he has believed the steady diet of comparisons to Hitler and threat to our democracy.  If you believe that, I mean truly believe it and not in the hyperbolic way, why should we be surprised?  Wouldn't someone who had acted on Hitler in the 30s been in the right?  That's the danger of the rhetoric.

Republicans can register their kids to vote when they turn 18? Didn't know that.

He had some issue with Trump, obviously, but that doesn't make him Anti-Maga, Anti-Republican, or an Anti-Trumper. Maybe he was just crazy and wanted to shot someone famous...we still don't know his motivation.

The lefties won't know his motivation until the party tells them what it was.

Must be a tough life not being able to deduce anything.

But the $15 is why we automatically assume he only registered as a Republican to vote against Trump?

I assume that's the more likely story because he tried to kill Trump.  The $15 is a small piece of evidence that happens to agree.  But in the grand scheme of it, trying to kill Trump is more compelling evidence than the $15.

I would deduce he was a bullied kid who got into guns and has a mental disorder.
