And FTR @Hardcore troubadour: the agreement wasn’t broken. Congress DID increase security for the border after Reagan’s amnesty. It just wasn’t enough to stem the tide. It will never be enough when there is a lot of people coming because as I keep trying to explain, you can’t slow down people crossing the border unless you’re willing to deal with the conditions in Latin America that is creating this issue. And we never have.

I wish I had it figured out. But I have great respect for Ronald Reagan. I’ve been to his library 3 times now. It’s a wonderful place to see if you’re ever in the LA area. Reagan was one of our greatest Presidents and amnesty is an important part of his legacy.

Yes it could be.  The difference between border crossing between Biden and Trump are night and day.  There were about 4x the number of illegals entering the country during the Biden years than there are now. Policy can make a difference.

You said previously that climate change is the #1 reason for illegal immigration.  Is that the “conditions in Latin America” that you’re referring to?

I deliberately avoid the political threads here so it is very possible I have missed it, but when have you argued that addressing the conditions in LA are the key to dealing with illegal immigration?  To my knowledge, I’m the only poster here who has ever made that argument, though I’m not talking about climate change when I say that.

At the end of Trump’s term there will be more undocumented immigrants in this country than at the start of Trump’s term. And then we will have some kind of amnesty. This is all for nothing.

Yes. Climate change is the main reason, although that is not the only cause of economic instability. There’s also the fact that Latin America has had a 300 year history of unstable dictatorial regimes largely caused by our involvement and interference for immediate benefit. We reap what we sow.

We simply disagree about the main cause, but the here is no denying that the CIA interfered in the governments of a couple of central and south American countries.  It is debatable how much that still affects them today.  I wouldn’t be able to speak to that.  Much longer ago the Spanish meddled far more in those regions and I think it is arguable that those people never have fully recovered from the Spanish.
