Hawkeye21 2,399 Posted November 19, 2024 When my dad was a kid, his parents would have him walk to the gas station with a note and some money. It was permission for him to buy cigarettes and bring them back home. Times have changed a little bit.
Sean Mooney 1,983 Posted November 19, 2024 What a weird story. It doesn't go into it but is there some law on the books in Georgia that would indicate about leaving a kid home alone below a certain age? There are a lot of things that places like CYS and that can get involved, but man this feels like a big overreach by the police barring anything on the books law wise. seafoam1 3,023 Posted November 19, 2024 The key to the story..."Forced to post $500". What 10 year old kid hasn't walked around at least a mile from his home?

My mom and dad both smoked... they'd pull up to the door of the local liquor or stationary store and my brother and/or I would hop out and buy their cigarettes. No questions asked. I'm sure every generation says "kids today are different" but it's never been more true. Kids today are being sheltered from the real world in favor of the virtual (screens, games, social media, youtube, etc.). They are used to being perpetually watched and told what to do, used to having instant gratification, and have little need to remember anything or learn how to do things for themselves. They assume they can do whatever they set their mind to because in the virtual reality in which they spend their time, there is always a reset, cheat, or dopamine payoff. When they discover they actually cannot do what they assume they can, they get mad. After all, real life doesn't pay off nearly as consistently as the virtual.

Engorgeous George 2,331 Posted November 19, 2024 Fascinating. My elementary school was two miles from home. Routinely starting in first grade we would walk or bike there. We had a creek behind our house. We might ice skate in the winter over to a park three miles away as the crow flies and five miles by car. By the time i was in fourth grade we moved. Town was five miles away. We would bike in when we had a few coins to get some candy. By the time I was in sixth grade i had taken up collecting coins. One saturday with my parents blessing we (a buddy and me) road our bikes into town. We boarded a bus for Milwaukee and went to the train station. we rode a train to chicago and then walked to a coin shop. We then returned. No parents involved. Nobody thought anything of it. In the summers we might be gone and out of supervision from morning until dinner time and after dinner until dark. Times change I guess. I know my daughters, for instance, where never left unsupervised for an instant until they were 122 or so and then, rarely. Once thye could drive they had to check in upon reaching their destinations. Of course they are daughters. had i had a son I probzbly would have let him run feral.
