President Trump said “contracts” are being negotiated to divide up land as part of a final deal ending Russia’s war in Ukraine and reiterated that a ceasefire could come “pretty soon.” 

“They are fighting against each other,” Trump told reporters Friday in the White House. “I think we’re going to have ceasefire on a lot of areas and so far, that’s all held very well.”  

“In getting that ceasefire, they had a lot of guns pointing at each other. You had some soldiers unfortunately surrounded by other soldiers,” the president said. “They are going to be — I believe we’re going to pretty soon have a full ceasefire, and then we’re going to have a contract, and the contract’s being negotiated, the contract in terms of dividing up the lands, etc., etc. It’s being negotiated as we speak.” 

Russia controls nearly 20 percent of Ukraine’s land. 

The Trump administration has pushed to secure a partial ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that would involve energy facilities and infrastructure. Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his support for the limited ceasefire involving energy facilities but rejected the U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire that Kyiv endorsed earlier this month

Ideally, Ukraine kicks Russia out and regains all territorial integrity from before the war started. Unfortunately, the Ukraine counter-offensive to accomplish this stalled. After five +  three years of hoping for this outcome, it doesn't look like its going to happen and each side is pretty much dug in at this point.

....thus the plan that sucks looks less sucky. 

i think though if Putin can only accomplish carving off 20% of Ukraine before getting so bogged down, invading an actual NATO ally would be off the table.

My plan is for the US and EU to massively increase Ukraine support and more Russian sanctions, and make it perfectly clear to Russia they can't win.  Obviously not Trump's plan so hopefully the EU alone can provide enough support to keep Ukraine afloat and wait out the depleting Russian military and economy. The Russian military (like their economy) is holding on by shoe-strings.... using donkeys/camels, sending wounded men back to the front on crutches, resorting to North Korean soldiers, and desperately trying to sign new recruits with ever increasing incentives. This a result of meat wave tactics creating nearly one million casualties.

Ukraine's counter-offensive in year two was a failure, which some experts say the main problem was Ukraine using NATO tactics with combined arms including ground and AIR.  Ukraine attacked with virtually no air support and the results were disastrous. Today Ukraine's air power is significantly increased, but like you said with the Russians so dug in, another counter-offensive might not be so effective. Thus, simply waiting out Russia's depleting military is probably be the only strategy.

I don't believe attacking a NATO country in the future is "off the table."  Imagine if NATO was attacked tomorrow by Russia. Do you really believe Trump would send in military? Doubtful based on his actions/words, and without US support other NATO members would be much less inclined to fight as well. Trump has minimized the deterrent - as was feared. Trump gets credit for one thing - he's gotten Europe to get off their lazy butts and spend on military realizing they can no longer depend on the US. Unfortunately, it's come a huge cost of US influence.

You're better off destroying the place and rebuilding it than you are wasting the money slow playing it.  On top of that, you're getting your military personnel killed.  Around 100k Russians fighting in this war have been killed.  There's no way that it's cheaper, better, or planned to draw this incursion out for 3+ years, getting approximately 100k of your own people killed, spending all that money, and using all of those military resources than it would be if you leveled a few infrastructure and military installations necessary to bring Ukraine down.
