Cancer scientist retained by ICE halting groundbreaking discoveries

Recommended Posts

A groundbreaking microscope at Harvard Medical School could lead to breakthroughs in cancer detection and research into longevity. But the scientist who developed computer scripts to read its images and unlock its full potential has been in an immigration detention center for two months — putting crucial scientific advancements at risk.

The scientist, the 30-year-old Russian-born Kseniia Pertova, worked at Harvard’s renowned Kirschner Lab until her arrest at a Boston airport in mid-February. She is now being held at ICE’s Richwood Correctional Center in Monroe, Louisiana, and fighting possible deportation to Russia, where she said she fears persecution and jail time over her protests against the war in Ukraine.

cool story, if only you knew how science works

but this is probably the ONLY person in the world who knows anything about this script, I mean thats the way science works

you develop something, nobody else tests it or learns it and are the only one that could possibly use it

Unnecessary.  Joe Biden already cured cancer.

What's with cancer research? Biden already cured it. Just ask him.

Right. Without this one person they're going to have to abandon the whole program.  Dumb people just lap that stuff up.

I didn't make the claim, her fellow scientists made that claim.  Maybe you should tell them that they don't know what they are doing.

Highlighting another example of the regime damaging science is not public humiliation.

Public humiliation would be saying that high profile people don't use credit cards or that their father drowned kittens to save farms.

Was just going to post this.  Dementia Joe said he would cure cancer if people voted for him.  The OP should be mad at Biden, not this Trump.

I am going to take the position that i do not want folks bringing petri dishes of unknown substances into our country, particularly into transportation hubs.  I'm funny that way.

They were known and used for cancer research.  She just didn't declare them.

Certainly no reason to revoke her visa.

Especially when it is done deceptively and purposely bypasses the law.

Seems a scientist of her repute would know and appreciate the rules and the ramifications for breaking them.  I suppose she might be the proverbial absent minded professor but in this day and age, when engaging in international travel, I find it hard to believe that folksoverlook such matters, particularly when every international flight I have been on announces maybe 5 or 6 times that you need to make declarations and they actually pass out the forms on the flight.

Then why not go through the proper channels to bring biological materials into our country? If it's, you know, no big deal like you're making it out to be.

You. Need. To. Declare. Your. Shiite. Follow the focking rules if you're so high profile. This is just another example of someone thinking the rules don't apply to them.

By your reasoning, after the first lie ever told everybody else has a justification for doing so as well.  I'm O.K. with that as I am half irish and so full of the blarney.

BS. The graveyard is full of irreplaceable people.

Hey boss, MSNBC is on the phone asking about our Russian scientist we want back should I say we can do the research without her or should I say she's irreplaceable?

No mistake.

I declare everything when coming back into the country.

I don't protest wars against my home country, period, but especially when working in other countries.

I'm also very familiar with the scientific method and dont believe for a second the research cannot continue without her.

You make the mistake of believing everything you read on MSM despite their poor track record.

Then why was there a text exchange where she said she wasn't going to declare them?

Just take the L, Gutter, and chalk it up to the MSDNC gaslighting you again.  The whataboutism of Trump never lying is sad.

Again you're choosing to believe a regime that lies all the time.  Whether she accidentally or purposely didn't declare them is no reason to cancel her visa regardless. Surprised this particular story didn't hit home but your bootlicking won't stop.

This is a bad example of a giant problem. She shouldn't be bringing undeclared specimens into the country. That's fuct up and I don't have an issue with her being detained for that.

Of course, the penalty is supposed to be a $50 fine and forfeiture of the contraband, but in true Trumpwellian fashion, instead she had her visa revoked. If I was a traveling, lecturing scientist that wasn't born here, I'd be looking at leaving soon. The education,  skill and talent disparity in this country, already exacerbated by shitty parents and schools, is set to fall off a cliff with this band of anti-intellectual authoritarians in control. It's been a run.

Took some more blue pills I see.  Is her camp denying these allegations?  Didn't think so.

Hit home why, because I come from a scientific background?  I would never, ever presume to take any work product into another country, let alone a country in which I had a work visa, let alone what could have been a bioweapon.  We recently had this Covid thing, perhaps you've heard of it?  Of course, @Fnordthinks Joe Customs agent should have fined her a cup of coffee and sent her on her way.

That being said, I'm not surprised that a lot of scientists object to it -- they overwhelmingly live in a pollyanna academic bubble, isolated from the real world, instead living in one where people just accommodate them.  But it is a concern, as I don't want to see a brain drain of misguided scientists.

I thought you had cancer and would support cancer research.  Maybe thats not as important as the frog embryo bioweapon ready to kill millions.

I was just going off what I read in the article, not making suggestions. I was honestly surprised about that and only mentioned it to point out the stark difference between punishments in America as we knew it compared to the republic of Trumplandia that we find ourselves in.

I do have cancer.  What this person was doing isn't going to make or break my survival.  It is a cog in the cancer-fighting machine.  I'm not saying her work isn't important, but the work will continue.

I am more concerned with the recent halt on funding to Harvard's medical research.  THAT is a big deal, if I understand it correctly (I haven't been on the interwebs much recently).

If Trump doesn't release the Russian scientist who smuggled biological materials into the US from France and lied about it we can't cure cancer? That's what retarded leftists are now going with.

Super duper secret cancer research. Cancer was figured out a long time ago. Most everything now is just trying to milk more money out of people.
