NEW YORK -- Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to umpire a game in Major League Baseball when she works games this weekend between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.

Pawol will work the bases in Saturday's doubleheader at Truist Park and the plate Sunday, MLB said Wednesday.

Pawol, a 48-year-old from New Jersey, worked spring training games in 2024 and this year.

MLB's move comes 28 years after the gender barrier for game officials was broken in the NBA, 10 years after it ended the NFL and three years after the men's soccer World Cup employed a female referee.

Umpires in baseball can be massively fat and grossly opinionated on whatever they want. 

Which means, wonderful, beautiful, smart women can even do the job. 

But I still don't care. I want to see the flamboyant gays doing the job. That should spice up baseball.

Probably be as questionable as the dudes. I did watch the Red Sox last night. They had 2 broads calling the game. They were meh to bad, and I am an easy grader. Maybe w time they could get more comfortable.

The gender of any umpire in baseball is irrelevant.  It's ball or strike, safe or out... not that hard.  Anyone who knows the rules can do it... even 20 year olds.  Just don't suck at it.  That... can be any gender.

Yep...  Of course there are so many insecure males, that must trash this woman for doing something that she wants and likes to do...  FB is really relentless...

I'm sure there's truth to that... but funny enough, I work with a group of 23 people (11F / 12M), and most of the women don't like women in men's sports.  They're more against it than the men.  Part of their argument is that there's not enough interest by women in women's sports and when you lose participation to men's sports you're losing voices and talent in/for the women's game, thus, holding back the women's game.

Yup.  Shes not close to being alone when it comes to umpire bad calls on balls and strikes.   It seems like the umps are actually getting worse, not better.   It's awful.
