The two largest owners of local television affiliates are Nexstar and Sinclair. Both companies contribute generously to conservative causes and support Trump. Their goal is media monopolization.

The FCC Director threatened to use the power of the his agency to.ensure "broadcast standards of honesty" or somesuch. In conjunction, Trump told a reporter he would come after Disney and Comcast next. Disney and Comcast own ABC and NBC.

Sinclair and Nexstar decide to pull Kimmel. ABC does the same, claims it's just a quick hiatus.

The President and FCC chief just made statements of disagreement with a comedian and that comedian is quickly removed from broadcast television.

None of the above is disputed.

If you do not see the problem here, you are probably part of it.

Well said....this is entirely government influence and overreach and no one should be okay with this regardless of their political leanings.

I'm not going to pretend I've watched more than maybe 1 full episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live in my life.

But I will say this (and I apologize for the lengthiness of the post)- which is something I've said many times other places. It's 11:30 at night. People have been following news all day long and either getting pissed at what's happening or passing out from celebrating too much. The goal at 11:30 should be tell a few easy dumb jokes, do a skit or two, interview the star of the new movie coming out, interview the second lead in the new series Law & Order: Milwaukee, throw to a musical act, say good night and be gone. A plurality, or maybe even majority, of Americans don't want political commentary that late at night.

Same as most people in my age bracket- if you watched any late night at all- I was a regular watcher of Conan. It was exactly this format- a dance, some dumb jokes, a rubber dog puppet roasting people, two interviews, music guest- gone. Even when Conan waded into political jokes it was through the medium of fake lips moving on a still picture of Bill Clinton. That format is the format that is successful and is non confrontational in nature. Over reliance on political stuff is why I never watched Colbert and why I very sparingly watched Kimmel. Even with this latest stuff I read the comments from Kimmel and I'm hoping there is stuff missing because what he said- isn't a joke. I don't even believe it is a set up to a joke. And if I'm tuning in to watch- I'm not looking for political commentary from the guy who used to end his last show with girls on trampolines.

All that being said- this is 100% government overreach and them pressuring companies to make changes. When the head of the FCC goes on a talk show and basically says "You deal with this or we pull your license..." that is unacceptable. And it's everything that the MAGA mooks complained that the Biden organization was doing in all the stories they made up in their heads. This isn't a made up story- this is a reality. Sure it will be funny when it swings back the other way and MAGAs are crying....but it shouldn't get to that, and it shouldn't be like that.

For Kimmel- the worst thing he did here was show an amazing inability to read the room in this situation. You see Colbert get fired. You see all the media corporations kowtowing to Trump's every demand so their pockets can be lined with mergers. You see all the fall out from Kirk's murder for almost 4 full days and how people were losing jobs and even the Vice President was encouraging people to rat on others at their jobs if they saw someone saying anything short of treating Kirk like a saint. Not to mention you put out a statement on Instagram that was perfectly fine in how it was worded and asked for decency from people. And then you do that on Monday night? That's just dumb. Even with me thinking the government is over stepping it's boundaries here there is also an element of "How many times did you think you could poke the bear before he bit back?"

Am I going to get residuals from the book you are writing about me or are you just going to steal it all like the oxygen you steal from all the others who could be breathing it if you didn't exist?

I believe in free speech and I also agree that our free speech has consequences, but, I'm sick of this crap.  It pisses me off how controlling Trump is being with this.  I hate how so many people get offended by just about everything now.  People on the right use to stand up against this but now they've just joined the cancel party.  At what point will people become rational and act like adults?

Karl Malone skit

The Karl Malone skits were hilarious!  This is the type of comedy we are missing out on because of weak minded, soft, emotional people.

Yes exactly. Honestly, I was looking forward to the right bringing some of that stuff back and they still haven't.

They've become so sick of the left that they just decided to join them.  We're at the point of pettiness right now.  We are not a serious country at the moment.  Just a bunch of spoiled children.

I get up at 5:30 so have not watched late night tv since college. I watched a few here and there when on vacation but the shows have taken a turn for the worse.

Back in the day it seemed like Letterman at the time, Leno and before my time Carson that their shows were light hearted comedy, mixed in with some entertainment and actor interviews.  If they make a joke about a political person it was one and moved on.

Kimmel and Colbert started out that way then took a hard turn to where they focused their whole monologue on politics, and were not even trying to be humorous at times, in fact sounded hateful and angry instead of being entertaining. At times they looked so bitter,  like they are going to have aneurisms. Who wants that before they go to bed?

Agree that people now are bombarded with 24-7 political news cycles.  Networks need to get late TV back to Entertainment and some comedy.  Hosts like Kimmel and Colbert are too far gone and not capable of doing a show without politics now to even try to return to their roots.

Agree with this. Again- it's 11:30 at night. No one is looking for angry political commentary

Me neither. Almost seems like some of you are missing the point on purpose. The POTUS decreed it, it was done. To facilitate further media mergers. Which will consolidate even more control of what we see and hear into an even smaller concentration of ultra-wealthy tech and media moguls like Ellison.

MAGA needs far less evidence than this to be convinced of bad acting on the part of any democrat. What is being done here has NEVER been done by an American administration. Whatabouting equivalencies doesn't make it right, nor does it make it equivalent.

THIS is the point.  It's not about Kimmel, what he said, what he didn't say.  None of us really give a fock about Kimmel.

It's the government using it's power over private entities to force them into decisions that benefit the administration through threats of penalty for not playing ball.  This is authoritarianism.  This is fascism.  This is the very thing Trump said he would not do.

The script wasn't flipped. It was shredded and rewritten by a those that are happy to have a large amount of supporters willing to turn a blind eye to their corruption in the name of liberal tears.

Lefties becoming constitutionalist overnight is hilarious. Quit pretending you care, you are just using it against the right for your own benefit when it’s useful for you.

That is what we voted on last November.  This is what a majority of those voters demanded last November.  Level the playing field.

Fnord...slow down.  There WAS pressure from the Biden admin to censor speech. On twitter, youtube, facebook, etc etc.   The big difference was the dems did it behind the scenes, the republicans are doing it publicly.  I don't support it, but don't you dare try to pull the dems are clean in this.  They absolutely are not.  BOF SIDEZ!

Deflect more. TDS has just become the catch-all for those too lazy or simple to debate Trump's actions based on their "merit."

No. Sorry man, I'm not listening to any more false equivalencies. At the time Biden's admin was making these overtures, there was a once-in-a-century pandemic occurring and Twitter was awash in false information that was killing people. But enough about Biden. That's in the past and cannot be changed.

FACT: The POTUS and his FCC Chair just threatened several American broadcast companies with license revocation because they disagreed with the content created by a comedian. The immediate effect is that the comedian was silenced. This is new. POTUS demanding fines be paid by CBS for editing. Editing! This is what literally every news org does with stories.

How about this: let's see some consistency, at least. Fox primetime regularly edits their interviews, and regularly engages in hateful, untrue speech. I'll wait for the hammer to come down on them.
