Most powerful voice in Rock & Roll.......

Recommended Posts

Right now. Not someone who is dead (Freddy M.) or past their prime (Plant) [just as possible examples] but who is putting the thunder down now on new music.

David Coverdale and Ozzy are both over the hill/past their prime AND can 'bring it' better than pretty much anyone out there right now.

best voice is probably chris cornell, but this has been discussed before.

i don't know that i'd consider him having the "most powerful" voice, though...

tough one. plenty of voices i prefer, but none are really powerful in the way that you most likely mean.

Hey, I love Ozzy and got to see Black Sabbath last summer and they could still "bring it." But the dude has to use a teleprompter now to get through shows. And as far as Coverdale, I haven't heard him sing in years so I don't know, but I was a Whitesnke fan before they had their MTV run...owned Come and Get it way back, although they have music way before that too.

I own (I think) every Whitesnake album. Their old stuff is great: Freeride, Love to Keep You Warm, Day Tripper etc.

i bought a live DVD a little while ago - Coverdale looks ancient, and poor Tommy Aldridge looked like something from The Lion King, but those two sounded great. Guitarist was crappy - I think one of the original member's kids.

Always was and always will be.

Russell Hitchcock from Air Supply.

He hit those highs without resorting to falsetto.

:headbang:

chris cornell is pretty powerful, IMO....actually was who I was thinking of. Heard an audioslave song on the radio this weekend driving around and thought, damm he sounds good (and as noted in the past, I was not a sound garden fan)...then the DJ came on saying that Tom M. was quoted as saying that chris cornell, in the production of their new album (unreleased) was at the top of his game, peaking as a singer...or words to that effect.

Sully from Godsmack.

Pretty damn powerful.

However, I have to agree with Chris Cornell. Brings the house down, literally.

Old school, has to be David Clayton Thomas from Blood Sweat and Tears.

Geoff Tate has some pipes too, as well as Bruce Dickenson, but I still vote Coverdale over those two for power.

I always liked Plant and Dio.

I'll tell ya though, I was at a Train concert a couple of weeks ago. I'd never even heard of em. Most of their music was pretty subdued. In general their songs don't lend to a powerful voice. But they finished with a cover of "Dream On", and I'll tell ya what, that guy's voice blew me away. His name was Pat something. I came away very impressed.

I guess I was meaning someone who is making new music that is actually being played on the radio. :(

How about Prince? I'd thought he lost that scream he can do, but he does it on the new one just like the old days.

Powerful and crappy. I think he meant singing, not shouting.

And yes, I love Metallica. Great music before the Black Album. But to insinuate that Hetfield has a voice is  The fact that he tries to have a voice has ruined a great band.

He sounds like he sings "high" from his vocal chords, not "low fro his diaphram. i think if you heard him without a mike vs. some of the others mentioned here you would hear a huge difference in vocal power.

I guess I misunderstood the topic...

In that case,

James Labrie (sp)? from Dream Theatre

Geoff Tate

Lead singer of Steelheart (forgot his name)

Pat Monahan.

I've heard them do a cover version of Zeppelin's Ramble On. Unbelievable.

 Anyone that can overcome the ferocious sounds Mike Portnoy makes has to have a powerful voice

Portnoy is a stud...Hell, the whole band is way to focking talented.

Glad they are still together putting stuff out
