peenie 1,896 Posted April 6, 2007 i notice there is a growing number of my friends that have no home phone lines. they use their cell phone at home and either have wireless or cable for their internet hookup. i'm thinking of ways to reduce the amount of bills i have and this seems like a good idea...or maybe not. what is your experience or opinion about having no home phone line? Rusty Syringes 478 Posted April 6, 2007 I have to have a home phone so there'll be enough line around to tie up my woman when she engages in improper peanut butter and jelly sammich construction.

itsbigmoni 1 Posted April 6, 2007 I think it depends on what you want. Do you want all your calls goin to your phone? It might get tiring getting phone calls from mothers, fathers, dr.s, friends, banks, repair shops, all on your cell phone when you're at work. Sometimes its good to have certain people call the house. So you buy something and the company wants to give a year end inspection. They can leave a message at home and its easy. Its not pressing. Plus, land lines are fairly cheap now too. Think about how many times you have to write your number down. Everytime you go to your dr. and you get a referral to go to a new one. Signing up at the gym. Its like having two email addresses. One you use for ###### like when you sign up for a message board, porn sites, and other random stuff that will never send you important stuff. Then you have one for "important" things. Let Da Big Dog Eat 40 Posted April 6, 2007 I haven't had a land line for over 5 years and can't think of any reason to get one.
peenie 1,896 Posted April 6, 2007 how will find my cell phone in the house if i can't call it? and don't you wish you could call the darn tv remote control.
Brown Eyed Girl 1 Posted April 6, 2007 This is a question I've been wondering myself as I'm also about to get my own place and thinking of ways to keep my monthly bills down to a minimum. I plan to not get a land line and continue to just use my cell for all calls. For some reason, I thought you had to have a home based phone line in order to have high speed internet access? Still looking into DSL or a cable modem... not quite sure how all that works.
jerryskids 6,557 Posted April 6, 2007 and don't you wish you could call the darn tv remote control. I've got three of them. They are called "kids". HTH.
Big_Pete 0 Posted April 6, 2007 I haven't had a land line for about 5 years now. I only use my cell phone, and cable internet. It's far more convinient, and cheaper than a lan line. (you'll be amazed that they still charge alot for home phone service). now, without a land line, you can't get DSL (you need active phone service for that), and if you have multiple people living with you like a kid or two, then a land line is a must, if you want to keep outrageous cell phone bills down. So it all depends on your situation. Pros: little to no telemarketers only 1 phone number to remember way more convinient (only 1 phone to check messages on/ missed calls) cheaper to not have 2 phones Cons: if you have more than yourself that uses the phone, you'll have high cell phone bills no DSL internet No Dial-Up internet (like anyone would even get that anymore) no home based businesses that use fax HTH
t.j 35 Posted April 6, 2007 I and most people I know have a cell phone and no home line. Can't imagine wanting a home line at this point.
Let Da Big Dog Eat 40 Posted April 6, 2007 no home based businesses that use fax HTH Not true. You can get internet fax starting at $10 mth and after about a year, they raise it to $15. And, they give you an actual phone number for people to fax stuff to you. No one ever knew I was sending a receiving faxes over the net.

RLLD 4,143 Posted April 7, 2007 No landlines in our house. Wife has her phone and I have mine, she uses Verizon with a regular cell phone, and I use the Blackberry 8100 through Cingular. It was a solid choice, we pay less for the two cell phones than we did for the one phone line.
spottedowl 1 Posted April 7, 2007 I had DirectTV about 6 years ago. Do they still require landline phone service to plug into the receiver?
yostevo 0 Posted April 7, 2007 I had DirectTV about 6 years ago. Do they still require landline phone service to plug into the receiver? They try like hell to make sure there is one hooked up to your receiver but no it's not mandatory.
Guest Davaco Posted April 7, 2007 it all depends. for me, no home line is the way to go. my long distance is free with a cell phone, i can text people, i get caller ID, call waiting, etc., all free. when i had a home line, the dial tone with unlimited local calls and nothing else was more expensive than my cell bill hth
redtodd 7 Posted April 7, 2007 I use a cell phone as my house phone. I think it is great. What is also good is that long distance on my cell phone is free. I also have cable internet, so there is no need for dial up or DSL.
peenie 1,896 Posted April 7, 2007 you guys are really convincing me that the cell phone only is the way to go.
Big_Pete 0 Posted April 7, 2007 I had DirectTV about 6 years ago. Do they still require landline phone service to plug into the receiver? you don't need a phone line to the back of the receiver. Like yostevo says, they'll tell you that you need one, and they may even threaten to fine you $5/month if you don't plug one in. But at any rate, they aren't required, and if they ever ask you if you have a phone line hooked up, just lie to them and say "yes I do", and then you don't have the fines or the hassles. The only thing you need a phone line for is any ppv ordering (if you use your remote) or tivo. If you call in for ppv ordering, there's like a $3 charge each call. And if/when a dtv guy comes out to hook it up and asks about the phone line, just tell him that you'll hook one up tomorrow when you go to radioshack to get a line. They'll then finish install, and in a few days you'll get a call asking if you hooked the phone line up yet or not. Again, just tell them yes. HTH you guys are really convincing me that the cell phone only is the way to go. it is the way to go. again, unless you have alot of teenagers that live at home, who use the phone (cause they don't have cell phones), then there is no need for a land line. Just to add to what you said, you can order PPV without having to call and be charged for it. Just go to the Directv website and you can order off the internet for free. I've never been charged nor heard of anyone else being actually charged for a lack of a phone line. I had Directv for about a year without phone lines. Then I upgraded to an HD receiver/Dish so they came out to do the install while my wife was home and I discovered they added a phone line to the house during installation in my front room. I kinda laughed because I was going to add a phone line to the den anyways so I just unplugged the line from receiver in the front room and rerouted it in the basement to the den. The phone company charges for that shiza.

moneyb 0 Posted April 7, 2007 Part of me wants to drop the Cell Phone. I don't use the 500 minutes a month and to get a new phone and 2yr contract they want to raise the price $8 and give me 700 minutes. That will make it cost more than the homeline with unlimited calls. I need a new phone because the battery(new) only lasts 20 minutes
