IGotWorms 4,059 Posted January 4, 2009 A New Cigarette Hazard: ‘Third-Hand Smoke’ By RONI CARYN RABIN Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air for their children, but experts now have identified a related threat to children’s health that isn’t as easy to get rid of: third-hand smoke. That’s the term being used to describe the invisible yet toxic brew of gases and particles clinging to smokers’ hair and clothing, not to mention cushions and carpeting, that lingers long after second-hand smoke has cleared from a room. The residue includes heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials that young children can get on their hands and ingest, especially if they’re crawling or playing on the floor. Doctors from MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston coined the term “third-hand smoke” to describe these chemicals in a new study that focused on the risks they pose to infants and children. The study was published in this month’s issue of the journal Pediatrics. “Everyone knows that second-hand smoke is bad, but they don’t know about this,” said Dr. Jonathan P. Winickoff, the lead author of the study and an assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. “When their kids are out of the house, they might smoke. Or they smoke in the car. Or they strap the kid in the car seat in the back and crack the window and smoke, and they think it’s okay because the second-hand smoke isn’t getting to their kids,” Dr. Winickoff continued. “We needed a term to describe these tobacco toxins that aren’t visible.” http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/03/health/r...03smoke.html?em Seems kinda ridiculous to me. They have done studies, and it can affect childrens health from what i have read.

phillybear 366 Posted January 4, 2009 I hope and pray that every child that encounters third hand smoke dies. Give me a break. Can we back up to the part where the article says "everybody knows" second hand smoke is bad? Um, bullsh!t. Second hand smoke is a mother focking lie. But I hope these same people keep telling us how to live our lives. They know best. Kudos.
IGotWorms 4,059 Posted January 4, 2009 Yeah, smoke is good for you. I never said that. I'm just pointing out that is quite a leap from: 1) "smoking is bad for you" to 2) "being around people who are smoking is bad for you" to 3) "being near an area where someone has smoked is bad for you." Where does it end?

Where does it end? when people stop smoking? i dont see how you can accept that smoking is bad for you but cannot accept that the same chemicals that are bad for you can linger, get into clothes, walls furniture, car seats and have the same harmful affects on others. Giants Fan 85 Posted January 5, 2009 yes, whats your point? that because i drive a car, cigarette smoke is not harmful? My point is that YOUR point is "how can you smoke when it harms other people" .... yet DRIVING A CAR is much more harmful to the environment in general. So it's OK for YOU to hurt other people .... it was OK when YOU smoked ... but now it's wrong. Do you see my point? Where does it end?

To be fair, the next time someone leaves their car running in the booth across from me in a restaurant I will surely give them hell.

So it's OK for YOU to hurt other people .... it was OK when YOU smoked ... but now it's wrong. Do you see my point? Where does it end? your point that both are harmful is obvious and absolutely true. However my point was not "how can you smoke when it harms other people". if you reread my post you will see i said i dont understand how you can ACCEPT that cigarette smoke is harmful, but think that residual smoke chemicals in furniture etc being harmful is a stretch. Also, saying that i think it was ok when i smoked is just silly. when did i say that? im not judging people who smoke im just stating that the products of smoking tobacco are harmful, even after the room, car etc is aired out. It seems you are inferring a lot from my posts. Do you see my point?

Giants Fan 85 Posted January 5, 2009 So ... you are saying ... it depends HOW you are hurting other people. It's OK to drive .... because you HAFTA drive .... right? It's OK to not recycle ... because not everyone can recycle .... but people who enjoy smoking, which is legal, and taxed more heavily than ANYTHING ... fine, I'll quit smoking if you quit driving. Let Da Big Dog Eat 40 Posted January 5, 2009 Here's a novel thought. Why don't we address issues like children out of wedlock paid for by everyone but their parents, the crisis in education and a myriad of other issues before inventing ways to rag peoples personal habits? ERZER 0 Posted January 6, 2009 I never said that. I'm just pointing out that is quite a leap from: 1) "smoking is bad for you" to 2) "being around people who are smoking is bad for you" to 3) "being near an area where someone has smoked is bad for you." Where does it end? 4) "being on a planet where smoke existed?" we better colonize another planet fast! I can agree the "third hand smoke" is a reality, I know whenever I come back from my parents or bothers house I have to throw the clothes downstairs right away and I smell it whenever I get in a car, but seriously, when is this going to stop? When they get tobacco banned, are they going to go after methane producing sources? Retirement can't come soon enough, I hope I don't miss out picking up that joint or pipe.... (can't risk a career over weed).
