I wouldn't even bet that he's starting by the end of next season. Thigpen started to look pretty good at the end of the season.

I have only about 50% confidence that Cassel is the real deal or not. I think people are going to find out quite quickly that he's not teh same guy when taken out of that system and not having Randy Moss and Wes Welker on the field.

New England realized this and decided to strike while the iron's hot.

I disagree with this. I think Matt Cassel will give the Chiefs a better chance of winning than Tyler Thigpen ever did. It was amazing the Chiefs were able to get what they got out of Thigpen in my opinion. But the Chiefs aren't really slouches on offense, if there was one bright spot for the team last year it was the offense. I think adding Cassel only makes them that much better. They also can ignore the QB position now, with Cassel, Thigpen and Gray all on the roster.

He won't even be the Chefs MVP.

The Chiefs normally have one? :overhead:

You don't find too many MVPs on teams finishing 6-10.

The Chiefs are better than that. They were close in most of their games last year, just couldn't seal the deal. Another noticeable stat is how Thigpen couldn't get into the end zone once they got to the red zone, I think that changes. Plus, it isn't like the division is all that great.

I think the general NFL observer will start giving the Chiefs more and more credit, once they begin to see the free agent acquisitions and the players they add in the draft. This is just the beginning here signing Cassel and Vrabel, but they did just add two key components for the '09 season. If they find 3 or 4 quality playmakers via either the draft or free agency, this team will be ready to compete this year. I truly believe that.

All right, you seem to be a close follower of the chiefs, so here's a question for you.

The chiefs have, in recent years, taken two defensive players in the first round that I was very high on. To date, neither has done much.

I am referring to Derrick Johnson, and Glen Dorsey. Do you see either of those players becoming what they were drafted to be, or were the busts?

Derrick Johnson is in a contract year. He's really the only LB at this point guaranteed a starting spot next year, even if the Chiefs do move to a 3-4. DJ has a lot to prove this year, this is kind of his make or break year and whether he becomes a fixture on this defense. We'll see if Herm and Gunther and all the guys he has been playing with has been holding him back. I think we'll have a better idea of what his potential is after this season.

Glen Dorsey was a freaking rookie last year. It's hard to guage the success of a DT, simply because they lack the stats like sacks, even when they do play at a high level. We need some more talent playing with him on the DL, especially at DE. But we'll see if he begins to get noticed a little more this season. Todd Haley is on record saying he has watched flm on Dorsey, and believes he can thrive in either a 4-3 or 3-4 system.

CMH,

Your eternal optimism is a day brightener. Refresh my memory. What did you predict them to do about this time last year?

Brady is a very good quarterback, especially in the clutch. An equal to Manning, and a top ten all-time QB. Yes, the system helps him, especially the system once it had Moss in it, but the system doesn't help with clutchness (ask Cassel when he played Pittsburgh last year). That is something that Brady has the market cornered on.

I agree on both.

I thought Dorsey was the sure fire pick of the draft last year. You certainly don't have to tell me it takes a DT time to develop (I'm a titans fan, and Haynesworth took forever). I think they may have the building blocks of a good defense there. If the LB from Wake falls to them, I'd go that route. Its too bad there isn't an end worth the #3 pick, as they could use one.

If Cassell is legit, I could see them challenging for the division next season. Should be interesting.

they had made the playoffs a year before with Huard leading the charge, going into '08 with just about the same team from the previous season. I expected more, and was a little surprised with the collapse. However, they did lose Huard and Croyle to injuries before settling with Thigpen. What more could you have expected?

The Chiefs aren't expecting Cassel to be Brady. However, they do hope he pans out better than signing Jeff Garcia, Kurt Warner, or drafting Mark Sanchez or Matt Stafford would get them.

Have they given that award to a player from a team that misses the playoffs?

Yeah, cause every other team isn't trying to find 3 or 4...

Reality Check - getting 1 or 2 quality playmakers is a great year.

Dumbest trade ever.

Thigpen looked pretty good with that crapass team last year, I don't think a QB is what they needed.

Thigpen looked pretty good against defenses that no longer gave a fock, as their teams were up big in the second half. Obviously, the coaching staff doesn't think he's the guy, so I'll defer to their judgement.

true, but not all teams are in the same cap situation that the Chiefs are. The Chiefs had over $50m to spend this year before taking on cassel and vrabel. They still have a ton of money to spend. You would think they will land one quality playmaker with the 3rd overall. If they can nab 2 off the free agent market that can come in right away and make a difference on this team, then hopefully they can find another guy or two that can come in and at the least try and be pieces of the puzzle. We'll see what happens, sooner rather than later.
