Michael Jackson's death versus others in recent history

Recommended Posts

Taking into account everything that is Michael Jackson, I think you'd have to go back to Princess Diana and maybe even Elvis to hit a bigger death.

Thoughts?

Carson?

Hope?

Cobain?

I guess it depends on your generation.

Not even close .....biggest since Diana, only Oprah could rival this :headbanger:

Cobain was more relevant at the time of death, but to a much much smaller population. Especially once you take the entire world into account rather than just the US. Diana was the biggest, I think JFK Jr wound up pretty high (whether it should have or not). If you narrow things to the musical scene...

1. Elvis Presley

2. John Lennon

3. Michael Jackson

Cobain would be on the short list for 4th, Marvin Gaye...somewhere behind those would be the Freddie Mercury/Jim Morrison/Jimi Hendrix level deaths.

I'd rank Cobain and Princess Di above him.

Cobain had a short lived run ....Jackson was a legend for decades :headbanger:

JFK belongs on the list.

also, Jim Morrison goes before/above Cobain.

I don't think the reaction to Morrison's death was greater than Cobain's. I'd even put Freddie Mercury and Marvin Gaye as bigger deaths.

Getting back to celebrities...Marilyn Monroe, James Dean were a couple huge ones.

Probably teh most talented guy that I ever remember dying. Considering his talents as a songwriter, singer, and dancer, he may be the most talented entertainer of our generation.

can't disagree but I still look at him as a disappointment.

Man, if he wasn't so screwed up, he could have been THE SUPREMELY #1 ENTERTAINER ever.

Another big one I missed...the Buddy Holly/Richie Valens/Big Bopper plane crash was pretty huge.

yeah, but that's because there were 3.

no one individual was worth all the fuss there (with all due respect).

Roberto Clemente or Thurman Munson maybe if we get plane crashes involved here?

I was more or less  when I heard the news. Dude looked like he's been cheating death for the last 15 years anyway. :dunno:

The last time I had the  moment was when Kirby Puckett died.

1. Elvis Presley

2. John Lennon

3. Michael Jackson

This seems right, although on a global scale id think:

1. Michael Jackson

2. John Lennon

3. Elvis Presley

Maybe even flip flopping Jackson and Lennon perhaps?

The Cobain and Lennon entries are very great here and deserve more than enough consideration.

I have to give Jackson the edge over Cobain, not because I like one over the other but simply because of history, pop culture, etc.

Lennon is a different animal. I'll have to think about that one.

I realize this is generational but the death of John Wayne was big news! John Wayne was America to most of the World. He died in 79 before the all out media blitz provided by cable, satellite, internet, etc... I remember just watching the special reports and full coverage as provided by the network channels...

My choices since 78.

1. Princess Diana - Completely shocking and unexpected.

2. John Wayne - THE American Icon.. He kicked Cancer's ass once and people thought he was invincible. Was the #1 box office attraction for over 25 years.

3. John Lennon - Kind of out of the public's eye during the late 70's but a generation of people will never be the same.

4. Elvis - The King died at 42. No one knew the extent of his "illness" so it was still shocking but everyone was aware there was a problem. The photos showing his obesity was alarming.

5. Michael Jackson - Icon and most talented of our generation (Along with Prince) but I am not sure people were really shocked about this. Too many photos of him in a wheelchair and of pieces of his face falling off.

6. Cobain - who focking cares... Same impact on me as Michael Hutchins of INXS... Wouldn't be nearly as famous if they had lived. The people above him were World Renown ICONS before they died. Cobain wasn't in that league.. not even close.

Morrison was not a shocker, but Cobain? Morrison, Hendrix, and Joplin dying within the same calendar year was trajic, at 27. If Eddie Van Halen would have died when Cobain did, most wouldn't have noticed. How was Cobain a voice of his generation through his music like Morrison, Hendrix, and Joplin were? He wasn't. Generation X needed a Cobain to express them. And in my opinion, he was a failure! One great song to define the early ninetys? Come on? No one of importance died in the ninetys generation X movement when it comes to Rock N Roll.

i forgot that kurt cobain had died until i read this thread..a guy who was more popular because he died....

like tupac..biggie...etc

for me...chris farley was tops...but like most musicians..anyone who is deep into drugs, ie heath ledger..it isnt a shock...

id throw dale earnhardt sr on that list also..even though he was in a dangerous sport..when his haid felled off, it changed the sport and its safety rules...

for those who truly love hockey..herb brooks passing was a shock also...

i shall sit back and wait for edjr to chime in with anna nicole smith  yeah, right....

great entertainer..but if we wouldve done to kids what he did..we'd all be in prison...so im going to have to give it a big see ya...

i feel worse for farrah fawcett..not many would fight cancer the way she did..nor should anyone have to suffer that long..and she couldnt even get a full day of press..

im not 100% shocked when

I'd say Mike Jackson is up there near the top. I'd go princess di then mike jackson. Everyone is talking about it. I swear, every car was bumping billy jean. Not to play down the deaths of some great entertainers, hendrix, cobain, marley, gaye, but jackson has been a star since he was 10.

And i agree with whoever said, had he been normal, he would've been the most prolific entertainer of all time. Everyone was talking about how bad ass his tour was going to be because he was serious and training hard for it. Supposedly he was going to bust out a new move that was going to be crassic like the moonwalk. That sounds like zoolander i know, but tht was the rumor going around.

Not to be disrespectful, but to be totally honest. He has been dead to me since just after Thriller. Dude just got too wierd and died along time ago. Dianna was taken. Timberlake would be a shame. This was a blessing.

This is gonna be the most over blown funeral ever. The wierdest $h!t is yet to come out on this quack!

With the wall-to-wall coverage, the big ones in recent memory (other than an ex-President)...

Michael Jackson

Princess Diana

JFK Jr

While Diana and JFK were mega deaths, it was for different reasons. As far as entertainers, Jackson is right on par with Elvis with his cult status. Not sure anything will ever touch those two. Jackson's coverage will actually be MUCH larger than Elvis due to technology.

He was still fairly normal on Bad..which was a very good/successful album.

I think all that just adds to the story, much in the way Princess Di's problems and weirdness added to her story.

Here is how talented Michael Jackson was.

As is he probably goes on the musical Mt. Rushmore with only the Beatles and Elvis......Yet we still talk about how he underachieved, could have been so much bigger, etc.

Think about what that means. How big could he have been?
