Accenture, the outsourcing giant, is switching its accounting base from Bermuda to Ireland, amid growing policial hostility towards tax havens and tax avoidance.

 

Announcing the move on Tuesday, Accenture said it does not expect any impact on its financial results or tax treatment.

 

WASHINGTON, July 31 — The Senate voted today to bar companies that move to countries considered offshore tax havens from winning military contracts as Democrats stepped up their emphasis on an issue they think has growing political appeal.

 

The practice of American corporations obtaining a mailbox in nations like Bermuda and the Bahamas to avoid taxes has come under increasing scrutiny. The House voted overwhelmingly last week to prohibit such companies from doing work with the proposed Department of Homeland Security.

 

Lawmakers cited a few of the several dozen companies that have reincorporated offshore in recent years from a list being circulated by Democratic members of the Ways and Means Committee. The list included Foster Wheeler , with $248 million in military and homeland security-related contracts; Tyco International , with $182 million; Accenture , with $144 million; PricewaterhouseCoopers, with $129 million; and Ingersoll-Rand , $39 million.
