Who are the top 5 bands from the USA?

Recommended Posts

When we think of great bands names like The Beatles, Stones, Zepplin, ACDC, ect... come up but none are from the USA. Who are your top five bands of all time to come from the USA?

In no order

Metallica

?

?

A couple friends and I had this conversation a few years back at a bar. There's many great individual American performers, but very few bands.

Nirvana was one we came up with.

Even though I know jack about hip hop, you could put Public Enemy on this list too. Those two helped shape music for at least a decade, though I think Public Enemy casts the longer shadow. There's some serious debate about Nirvana's larger historical significance. Public Enemy doesn't get anywhere near as much flak.

The Beach Boys

I disagree with a lot of bands being thrown around, but this one is up there in terms of music history and significance.

KISS

The Beach Boys

I don't agree with Metallica. Personally, I see a band like the Commodores as more influential.

Metallica is a NICHE band. Only bikers, white-supremacy groups, and ex-cons listen to Metallica. Sorry, but it's true.

The influence of their early work is enormous though.

It's well documented that I absolutely hate them, but they're a different band now. Their first four albums were revolutionary in many ways. It's like they successfully synthesized speed metal with Black Sabbath, and everyone else in rock slowly took cue.

Pearl Jam, Aerosmith, Beach Boys, The Eagles....then it gets fuzzy. I won't go into rap as there is no such thing as a rap 'band' (band implies, you know, music...and instruments).

I suppose Van Halen could be in there, though I've always considered them the masters of average music (tons of songs that are decent radio play, few to none that are 'great'). Guns N' Roses just didn't have longevity or they would have definitely been a top 5 group. Grateful Dead are very niche, The Doors are very overrated. I love Tool, but they just aren't mainstream. Arguments can be made for Metallica and Green Day.

I take Pearl Jam over Nirvana easily (Nirvana was two big albums and done, and no I'm not counting Bleach or Unplugged....and frankly, Nirvana musically was inferior to Pearl Jam, AiC, and Soundgarden). Beach Boys are in no way my kind of music (irritating me greatly) but they were very significant musically.

Wow, worst music post ever.

Don't take the bait. There is no way he is that dumb.

:dunno:

What about the Chili Peppers? From punk/party band to main stream. And have been doing it for 20+ years.

And is this band only? Because Elvis in a no brainer.

These are my top 3 in order:

1. Beach Boys

2. Metallica

3. The Dead

I thought the same thing. If Elvis had a band name, he'd be hands down #1 with nobody even close.

And yes, I can be that dumb. Metallica's music wasn't mainstream enough to be considered among "the top 5 bands from USA". So settle down Beavis.

I'm brown and love metalica.

Some that haven't been named:

The Temptations

CCR

Beastie Boys

Rage

Tool

I was thining CCR but after that many posts i started thinking maybe they were british.

Creedance clearwater revival

REM

Red Hot Chilly Peppers

Crosby Stills nash and young

Red hot chilli peppers are one of my favorites. They crossed a lot of genres. I think they are one of the most underrated bands ever.

Are we only doing old school? I nominate The Gorillaz.

My top 5 in no particular would include

GNR

Metalica

RHCP

CCR

Gorillaz

NWA

That's another one I thought of.

They didn't last too long though, and while good, seem better after their members had great solo careers.

Here's another I thought of: The Wu Tang Clan.

I'd comment further on this, but the Yankees are in a close game right now, and Panamanian Revered Mariano Rivera is coming in the close out the 9th....

Neil Young is Canadian. CCR was on the bubble for my top 5.

I'll probably draw some fire from this Classic Rock dominated crowd, but I'd wager Interpol will make these lists some day. They're amazing.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few aughts "indie" bands make it. Most of them are American and pretty damn good. Many will fizzle after an album or two, but the ones that keep producing will make these lists.

Just thought of another one: Minor Threat.

Not sure if they belong in the discussion, but in punk circles they're like the godfathers of American punk.

Punk and Rock. Are they American? I forgot. If so, they clearly belong on the top 5 list. They're enormous - far more influential on all rock than Minor Threat.
