gocolts 300 Posted March 17, 2013 OK. So I'm halfway through season 2 of Alias and I can't help but feeling it is a ripoff of the much superior La Femme Nikita (the original US version). It's entertaining, but it is by no means something I would rate very highly and I'm now questioning why I've invested so much time into it. ######, if you want a terrorist/crime drama/get your heart pounding kind of show, 24 blows this one away. And the conveniently stolen plot lines from La Femme Nikita without the convincing psychologically evil aspect is making me kinda not like it at all. Not much can compare to 24. Your expectations are too high. I never saw the other show you are referring to, so not sure if it is some kind of ripoff. I thought Alias was decent. Lots of plot twists and turns to keep it fresh. Nikita works for Section One, which is like SD-6 and employs similar practices like torture and killing their own operatives and family members, but they are the good guys too because they are an anti-terrorism/espionage agency within the government. And once Section One comes and recruits you to work for them (which is akin to kidnapping) the only way out is to die. The story lines in Alias are very similar, but La Femme Nikita is 100 times better.
CantTouchThis 23 Posted March 20, 2013 Traffic and 21 Grams Never heard of Benicio Del Toro before those movies, now I am looking for more movies with him in it. Very good in both movies. Apparently he was in Snatch but I don't really remember him. Both movies are very cerebral and emotional. Don Cheadle's appearance has never changed since he started acting. Traffic was in 2000 and he looks exactly the same now. Weird.

nikki2200 4 Posted April 2, 2013 Wow Alias got really bad. Season 4 is the suck. It's like they forgot all of the previous story arcs and plot lines and just started the story over from scratch. I used to give JJ Abrams a reprieve because it wasn't clear exactly how much he contributed, but I'm having serious Lost flashbacks here. If gocolts is saying that the last season was horrible, I can't even imagine how much worse it could possibly get. But now I'm committed so somehow I keep watching. I thought the show held up pretty well the first 4 seasons. The final truncated season 5 was doomed due to Jennifer Garner's pregnancy, JJ Abrams started on LOST, abandoning the Rambaldi story line, and the ratings dictated a rushed ending which ultimately felt dissatisfying. Much like LOST, Alias went one season too long, as ending after Season 4 would have been just fine, much like ending LOST after Season 5.

Much like LOST, Alias went one season too long, as ending after Season 4 would have been just fine, much like ending LOST after Season 5. I'm on Season 4 right now and it just feels like it went full retard. I watched an episode last night that had vampires in it. I did read a little about it and apparently it wasn't doing well in the ratings so ABC forced them to switch up the show and make it more mainstream (i.e. CSI-like where every episode sorta stands on its own). The only reason I was into it was because of the Rambaldi storyline, and that seems to have fallen clear off the map. It's obvious something happened between Seasons 3 and 4 and they flushed and started over with the new Black Ops group and everything just feels weird, like they forgot what was going on in the first 3 seasons. Which is exactly how Lost ended up looking back over the different seasons. Lost just made a greater attempt at pretending they hadn't forgotten the story. You really should check out La Femme Nikita, phillybear. I think you would like it a lot. It never really got a huge following but damn that was a good show. And they managed to never lose the story or the character arcs over 5 seasons, which appears to be pretty hard to do. I really think Alias was a ripoff of Nikita and a much much inferior show. I'm going to finish off Alias because I do want to see how the Rambaldi stuff wraps up, even though I know it's going to suck. I've invested so much time at this point I might as well. I always thought Alias had a bit of a cheese factor, in that it didn't take itself all that seriously. That made the experience very enjoyable. Also launched the careers of Jennifer Garner and Bradley Cooper, and introduced me to Lena Olin. But, as with most TV shows, they fizzle in the final episodes. I thought Alias was great for 4 years. It sounds like La Femme Nikita might be more of a hard edged show, so the comparison is probably on target, but probably not a direct match. I may get around to seeing it in the future. nikki2200 4 Posted April 11, 2013 We're on a bit of a quirky indy movie kick and I've watched a couple that I've really enjoyed. Lars and the Real Girl - so weird and original But I'm a Cheerleader - about a girl who gets sent to one of those de-gaying camps. It wasn't awesome but I definitely LOLed a few times. Only for libtards who can handle homosexuality. And watched Donnie Darko again because I couldn't remember very much about it. Excellent.
IGotWorms 4,063 Posted April 15, 2013 They've got a new documentary called "The Imposter" that is pretty damn good. Just a crazy story. You won't believe it until you see it. It's one of those things where, if it were a work of fiction, you'd scoff at how ridiculous and unbelievable it is. But it really happened. I highly recommend it

MDC 8,084 Posted April 20, 2013 Watched a Spanish movie called Cell 211 last night, it was really good. It's about a prison guard on the first day of the job who gets knocked unconscious in an accident. When he comes too the inmates took over the prison in a riot and he has to pretend to be another prisoner to stay alive. It wasn't too violent but really well acted and pretty tense, definitely worth a rental.

kutulu 1,724 Posted July 6, 2013 Not a movie, but a short first season (5 episodes) is The Fall. Its a British show (which I don't normally like) about a serial killer and the cop (the chick from the X files) trying to catch him. I thought it was very good. Season two doesn't even begin production until early 2014 though.

tikigods 77 Posted July 6, 2013 House of cards is an original Netflix series starring Kevin spacey. It's pretty damn good. Agreed. I spent most Thursday and Friday digging for gems on Netflix. I found a good one with Danny Glover, who lost his wife and daughter in an accident, where he has ESP. It was pretty decent.

kutulu 1,724 Posted July 26, 2013 This one was a direct to video movie, so it's not super terrific, but I watched the whole thing and liked it pretty good. (Started and bailed on 2 or 3 other movies just prior to starting this one). The Experiment (2010) (I guess it's a remake of a German one from 2001). Based (I'm guessing very loosely) on Philip Zimbardo's Stanford prison experiment in 1971. It has F. Whitaker, A. Brody, Fisher Stevens, Clifton Collins Jr among others so it's not a bunch of unkowns. Not going to make any all time lists, but you can do worse on Netflix. OldMaid 2,137 Posted July 26, 2013 Just finished watching Orange is the New Black, yesterday. Pretty good... I think they could have cast Jason Biggs charater a little better- I didn't like him. The lead actress, Taylor Schilling did a fantastic job, though. Also, Tiki... I watched The Factory on your recommendation... I saw that twist coming from a mile away. I just finished it too and agree with Jason Biggs. He's a horrible actor and the other actors made him look worse. It took me a couple of episodes to really get into it. I watched the first couple of episodes in 15 minute segments. The more Jason bigg scenes the less I liked it. But once they started to focus on the individual inmates it was really cool. The ending of the season was pretty awesome. I recommend giving house of cards and orange is the new black a shot. Give them three episodes each before giving up on them. IGotWorms 4,063 Posted August 3, 2013 Watched "Super" last night with Rainn Wilson. Pretty weird movie, don't know that I really liked it that much BUT at least it was pretty original. Not for the faint of heart either. Actually it kinda reminded me of John Dies at the End, if you've seen that one.
