My understanding is that you really should tip them if you stay multiple nights. I usually tip them though even if it's only one night (assuming the place was clean when I got there). It's a crummy job and I'm sure their wages are paltry.

Tip daily, assuming a service is provided. Then a bigger tip after your last night, because a more thorough cleaning is done when you leave.

You don't have much of a choice in most hotels. If you try to keep them from cleaning the room they go in anyway. They want to make sure you aren't trashing the place.

Not true. Leave the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door and call the front desk. Some high-end hotels even give you the option to opt out for $ - just stayed at one in Beaver Creek CO.

I tip based on service. And wait staff LOVE having me at their table. I tip very well if given proper service.

I always compare it to someone in sales, which I think there are more people who are/were in sales than a gratuity based job like Bartender/Serving(or so they would claim). You have a sh1tty base salary, but make the large majority of your money off of commission. If you sell someone whatever inventory you sell, the company makes money off the sale, and you get a certain percentage of the cost of the said inventory as your commission. Serving is the same exact way, except the customer pays you the commission rather than the company. This way the cost of your meal is considerably lower than it would be, and it gives the customer the freedom to tip base off of the service they have.

 

When you go into a restaurant where you are being served by a waiter, the restaurant ASSUMES that you will be tipping at least 10%, thus their base salary is usually less than half of minimum wage. That way the gratuity will make up for the rest of the wage, bringing it back to and over minimum.

 

I am sure that most of you tip well. But even sh1tty service should warrant a 10% tip, otherwise the server is essentially paying YOU to serve them. If you don't like it, don't go out to a restaurant to eat. If you can spend $20 on a meal, you can pay an extra $2-3 dollars. Again, if tipping wasn't customary/assumed, that meal would be $25-30 easy. So, just keep that in mind if you are a cheap SOB at restaurants.

It is in a lot of places, based on concern you'll spread cooties when a serving utensil touches your unwashed plate. It's more for show than anything, as the real culprit in transmission of foodborne illness is you unwashed hands - if they really were concerned you would be required to wash your hands each trip.

I did something similar a couple years ago. Brutally cold and snowing. If memory serves the bill was about $16. Gave the driver $30
