Music Documentaries ( share some )

Recommended Posts

I don't give a rats ass what genre of music you wanna share, just share some great documentaries!

I'll kick it off with RUSH :headbanger:

Ummmm, "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" :dunno: "The Last Waltz", is probably the gold standard.

"Iron Maiden: Flight 666" is pretty great and I am not a Maiden fan.

Under African Skies - Documentary on Paul Simon's Graceland album

Marley - Documentary on the life of Bob Marley

Don't Look Back - Documentary of Bob Dylan's 1965 tour of England (D.A. Pennebaker). It is funny to hear some of the ridiculous questions asked by the media

Back in the 80's there was a documentary of Motley Crüe and Dokken. Two of the best lines I've stole from them are Mick Mars being asked the meaning of life...."The illusove fish in the pantyhose that no one can seem to find!" and Dom Dokken explaining the best way to fly. Dokken: Stoned and drunk. Fortunately, I'm both!

The Decline of Western Civilization Part II - The Metal Years

The piece with the guitar player from W.A.S.P. drinking vodka in his swimming pool as his mom shakes her head in the background is awesome. :music_guitarred:

There's some great musical documentaries here and I love 'em all but there's great supergroup music concerts as well.

I grew up from a baby with the Beatles and Eric Clapton playing in our house all the time.

Therefore as I became grown, I was attracted to George Harrison & Eric Clapton's duo work.

Here's a GREAT song by George that a lot of people may not even think about but at his wake, Eric shows what a GREAT song it is and what a GREAT guitarist HE is. The last 2 minutes are as good guitar work as you'll ever hear.

Plus there's lots of other stars including Billy Preston giving their best performance for their dear friend George.

As I think someone else already mentioned, Martin Scorcese's The Last Waltz is probably the most influential music documentary ever made and really popularized the format that pretty much ever music documentary since has followed -- i.e. the use of performances interweaved with interviews from various people. Plus, there are tons of cameo performances, most notably from Van Morrison, Dr. John, and Muddy Waters. For what it's worth, it was one of the primary influences on This is Spinal Tap! as well -- although The Band's music is quite different.

Some other ones that I enjoyed...

-- Dave Chappelle's Block Party

-- Anvil: The Story of Anvil

-- Searching for Sugar Man

-- A Band Called Death

-- It Might Get Loud

:dunno:

Billy Joel "And So It Goes" was phenomenal.  He is one of my favorite artists, and I learned a ton about him, his personal life and his music.

On HBO Max

I liked these:

George Michael/WHAM!

Gaga - Five Foot Two

The Greatest Night in Pop

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck

Girl You Know It's True: Milli Vanilli Story

I know I've seen more but those were top of mind. I refuse to watch any about J Lo, Taylor Swift, or Beyonce.

The Stranger was my first Joel album (I was 10) and will always be the pinnacle to which I compare his other work.  52nd Street was also great, more of a jazz vibe.  Glass Houses, I was seeing cracks in the armor.  After that, eh.  One of the things I liked about the documentary was how he talked about not just putting out the same type of music, that an artist needs to experiment and grow or die.  I can respect that.

For his earlier stuff, when I was younger most of what I heard was from Songs In The Attic, which in a way is my favorite album of his, although it's obviously a compilation.  I particularly like the live versions on there.  I've since heard the other earlier stuff, but I really don't know what songs were on what albums.

There are also some really good ones on Prime. Rush, Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, Randy Rhoads, Metallica, The Police, Steely Dan, Paul McCarteny, Rolling Stones, and a few more. Good stuff.

This one was very good.  Background on Elvis' life. but specifically focuses on his overexposure and lost relevance in the late 50's and 60's.  Then goes into the buildup and aftermath of his Vegas comeback concert.
