Eaglesin14 12 Posted August 13, 2014 Thinking of getting rid of cable completely. Mine runs me $123.00 a month and I barely watch it. Can get by mostly on just Netflix for 8 bucks/month. If anyone has done this, what are the best options for sports? Live and/or Sportscenter-type stuff. Yes. I quit cable and got Direct TV with all the movie channels and the NFL package.........but then, I'm not worried about a few bucks here and there.
WhiteWonder 2,675 Posted August 13, 2014 I quit paying for cable a couple of months ago, and so far so good, but now all of a sudden they're threatening to disconnect me! i laughed
WhiteWonder 2,675 Posted August 13, 2014 they'll figure it out. They have to. do they though? while picking and choosing a select few networks to pay them for is obviously attractive to the consumer, I have to think these providers have deals in place with networks to offer as part of various packages. allowing consumers to pick and choose what they want at a per channel fee would leave some networks out in the cold.. plus, a lot of people just find it easier to pay 150 per month than have to deal with roku+hulu+netflix+streaming+internet and setting everything up just to save $50 a month. i would assume, if it made business sense, they would be doing it already
The Moz 69 Posted August 13, 2014 Would love to quit but can't I go year to year from Comcast to DTV getting the best deal I can...

There is basically no reason to have cable except for live sports. And, even that, every league but the NFL already offers all their games for a monthly subscription fee. Also is there a service that offers legit food chan / discovery / history chan? sometimes i like to just relax late at night and binge watch some pawnstars or chopped or hardcore pawn aka "angry black people"

phillybear 366 Posted August 13, 2014 Well, well, well. NewbieJr can't afford cable anymore. There's a shocker. Next thing you know, Newbie EmptyPockets won't be able to afford a car nor a cell phone. Sheesh. He's about 2 weeks away from limping to the corner with his gout and taking the bus to work. peenie 1,905 Posted August 13, 2014 i stopped for almost 2 years but eventually went back because i needed internet service. the offer at first for comcast "internet only" was great, but then after a few months the "internet only" price went up so much that getting bundled internet and basic cable tv was a better option. then of course after a few months more getting 1 premium channel wasn't that much more expensive. i just don't have time to watch much tv so sometimes i want to get rid of it again. it feels like such a waste of money. During my cable hiatus, I had Xfinity(comcast) internet. Started at $19.95 and eventually got up to $75. The fact that the bundle would have been less and they did not inform me really got under my skin. Thus the move back to FIOS. But now I am locked for 2 years at $75 for TV/Internet. DankNuggs 305 Posted August 13, 2014 Cable should really be internet based, there is no need for cable companies.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted August 13, 2014 No way - I rarely watch regular tv, would be lost w/out it. Cutting back on a telephone landline was way more practical for me.

KSB2424 3,148 Posted August 13, 2014 The cable companies don't even need to go full throttle a al carte pricing, they can at least make multiple packages. Moreso than they do now. The Basic Cable floor plan for HD should be all the network channels plus like maybe TNT, TBS, Weather Channel, CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, FX and the Food Network. You know just a basic cable plan. Then you have a sports package: with all the ESPN's, Golf Channel, FoxSports, etc. A movie package(s) with HBO, AMC, Starzz. Maybe multiple of these one with Showtime one with all the HBO's etc. A Kids package: With NickJr, Cartoonetwork, Disney An adult pacackage: with History Channel, A&E, Animal Planet, etc. And then an Everything package that has it all if you want to pay for it all. Something like that, with more options where you can narrow down your channels better in a more cost effective manner. For example I would have the basic plan plus sports and kids package. Instead of paying $120 it'd be like $75. People would come back to cable with options like that.
OldMaid 2,129 Posted August 13, 2014 you can watch HBO with a roku. how about you people actually look into this before you crap all over it? You have to have a cable subscription to HBO to watch HBO Go, which is what that is on Roku. Pretty sure no one offers a standalone HBO subscription yet. I heard HBO might in the future, but for now, it's a no. Why don't you actually know what you're talking about before you try correcting people.

Mike Honcho 5,097 Posted August 13, 2014 Doing it now. We moved recently and I used that opportunity to tell Comcast to go fock themselves. Hate that damn company. Now we just have Internet and Netflix. It's fine except for sports. Don't even miss it at all for now but I'll be hurting come football season I think I heard your call to Comcast online a few weeks ago.

The Moz 69 Posted August 14, 2014 I pay 170 a month -- granted I have all the channels for Cable / Internet . I do remember back when I first got out of college in 1998 I paid like 50 bucks and even back then I still got HBO , Shotime and Starz. Granted Internet is a little cost but how the hell does cable go up 300% in 16 years? Well Housin seemed to of gone up that much , same with Gas (gas was 1.20 in 1998) , etc............. All the while earnings have not gone up even remotely as much -- what has CREDIT and the ability to borrow allowing people to buy things they can't and allowing the prices to go way beyond what people can afford. It affected everything. Eliminate the mass availability of credit and prices will go down.
redtodd 7 Posted August 14, 2014 Cut the cord and do not miss it. Everything I need I can get through a Roku and Apple TV. I don't get to watch the news much now, but that is not a bad thing. The only issue is football, but I can get the games on the DirectTV app on th iPad if I want. If my Patriots are on the local channels, I can always go to my buddy's bar and watch it and nurse a cheap drink or two.

OldMaid 2,129 Posted August 14, 2014 I believe comcast has a deal you can pay for internet and hbogo Hmmm.... interesting. Few problems though. 1) I could probably do without Starz, but would still want Showtime 2) After some research, it looks like the price on this jumps up quite a bit after the first year. 3) Can't get Comcast in my area.
