Odd Situation in My League

Recommended Posts

12 team league, $130 buy in. Top scorer gets a decent cash award at end of regular season. As of now, our top scorer is second to last in record at 3-6 and he would not make the playoffs. I've never seen anything like this.

Happens all the time in head-to-head leagues. A few years ago I had the most points, finished under .500 and missed the playoffs. This year the team with the second most points is sitting at 4-5.

That's why we did away with head to head for the most part. We use breakdown and head to head is a sidebar. The best team wins with breakdown

couple years ago, we had the highest scorer in the league not make the playoffs. 14 teams with 8 playoff spots, so we changed our rules and top 6 seeds are based on record and 7th and 8th seeds are the wildcards based on points between those not in the top 6 (record-wise)... seems to work out pretty well

To prevent exactly this.

Both leagues I am in do this.

Allow for the highest scoring team to get in that doesn't get in with their record.

you can be 0 and 13, but if you score more than the other teams that don't make the playoffs, you're in.

Crazy stuff when you do head to head but IMO it's more realistic. If the NFL did total score only, the Pats would meet the Broncos in the Superbowl.....................every year.

This is the reason that the highest scoring team is getting the decent cash prize at end of year. If having a high score garaunteed playoffs then you wouldn't be compensating with cash.

Very rarely is a team ever going to lead the league in points and not make the playoffs. I don't believe it.

I'm that team...2nd most points...3-6 on the season. basically have to win out and get some help to make the playoffs...and playing the top scoring (by a lot) team this weekend. :wall:

Odd situation in the Die Nasty league that consists of FFToday posters: GoColts Gary's team is actually above .500

The guy with the most is 5-4 and not currently in the playoff picture. Just so happens he has about 20 pts above average scored on him, I have about 25 pts a game above avg scored on me. Unwad your panties EJ

Happens all the time. In my league, the guy who is tied for 1st place has the 2nd lowest total points.

BUT and it's a freaking huge butt... also has the lowest point scored against him.

For the first 4 weeks, I completely destroyed the competition winning week after week with the most points scored by a large margin. BUT I also had the most points scored upon. So throw in the fact I could never add a player (constantly last in waiver priority), the disgusting amount of points scored against me and the complete failures of dropping AP, RJennings injury, Fred Jackson straining his unit, Andre Williams sux, I am forced to start the likes of T.West, Dernard Robinson and even K. Davis last week. Oh yeah my QB is Matt Ryan.

Now sitting at 4-5 and pretty much accepted the fact my season is over.

:shocking:

I would prefer to establish the bottom four teams by record alone and then have the two next lowest scoring teams be non-wildcards regardless of their head to head outcomes.

Total points means jack . So what, if someone's team blew up for 250 points one week, then you had crappy weeks in between.

FF in HTH leagues is about finding consistent players that put up good average points every week. Feast or Famine doesn't cut it. I hate when people about having a lot of total points and a losing record in HTH leagues.

This guy gets it.

Here is a real life example. Which team is better?

Team A weekly scores: 134, 123, 93, 127, 97, 116, 116, 136, 98 = 1035

-or-

Team B weekly scores:140, 102, 79, 74, 168, 75, 113, 163, 126 = 1055

Team A is 6-1 and in first place. Team B is 5-4 and fighting for a playoff spot. I am the owner of Team B. If my team doesnt make the playoffs, you wont catch me crybabying the unfairness of head to head leagues. I knew what the rules were when i joined.

I'm in a weird situation too. I have the 3rd highest points and the 3rd highest differential between my points for and pts against points and I'm 4-5 in 8th place. I've scored 83 points more than my opponents have scored, but I've lost more than I've won. Its just how the cookie crumbled. The 3rd place guy has scored 70 points LESS than his opponents have scored and is 6-3.

6-1 how'd he miss 2 weeks?

I assume he meant 8-1, but you take the point.

There are more to FF rankings than total points. Players should also be ranked by how regularly they put up a decent point total week to week. I would never play in a TP league, that would be the lamest thing ever. TP does impact our final rankings in the event of a HTH tie in records though, but it hardly ever comes into play.

Tons of players are feast or famine, but have a great stat-line at the end of the year. Draft a whole team of those players and you'll be so up and down, and frustrated beyond belief. Who cares if you won by 100 points a week ago, if the following week you lose by 10. I'd much rather have team A, as Team B clearly lost when they posted below 80 points in 3 weeks of the season.

My 12 team league takes the top 4 off of record and then the next 2 based off of points. It works perfectly. You have to account for head to head as a priority for playoff spots. Otherwise there is no Monday night nail biters as you cling to or overcome a lead. The last two spots gives most people the hope of the playoffs despite bad beats and motivates to always fill the line up because you don't want to take zeros that become meaningful at the end of the year.

The crazy thing is my fourth loss came the week I scored 163. I lost 165-163 that week.

I don't like head to head, and I don't like going off of "points for". The Breakdown column is the only true measure of your teams strength relative to all the other teams for a given week. The one adjustment to make to the breakdown idea is that to eliminate the 10-0 or 0-10 weeks (which could cause false inflation or false deflation), you simply get a win if you finish in the top half of your league and a loss if you don't.

That said, very few leagues like to use it because we are obsessed with the idea of head-to-head because it reflects actual sports. The problem is that the fantasy game is no way reflects real sports.

It is a cool idea. Have to bring it up with management.

nzoner is having a brilliant year and can't catch any breaks on the schedule. He scares the cr@p out of me. My 8-1 record is an illusion, I haven't played any of the three highest scoring teams yet and my last five wins have all gone down to the wire on MNF. It seems that MNF clock can never roll down fast enough but it does always get there before disaster strikes.

Just use the Breakdown or Power ranking. We use power rankings and it is not uncommon for the better record team to miss out.

no... why would you ask this? Let me guess... you play a 20 team league with top 2 getting into the "playoff" and winner take all, right?

Double win/loss leagues guys...I think it's a pretty fair way to settle things....even a consistent scorer can still hang around if he gets shafted with an unlucky schedule

Yes, 8-1 Team A is my team in Cult Classic. It's in 1st place, but only 5th out of 14 in total points; the three weeks I didn't hit 100 were the weeks Kyle Rudolph, Reggie Bush, and Nick Foles got hurt early and couldn't finish their games. Fortunately I had/have the depth to replace them the next week. The team is just starting to get healthy, then I lost Foles this past week.

Also, the last five weeks featured five close wins decided in the 4th quarter of MNF.

I beat southcarolina in week four when he laid one of his 70s eggs.

First of all, unless im missing something we have a 14 team league with a 13 game regular season, which means we all play each other once, correct? So the schedule isnt more or less fair to anyone. Its exactly the same.

MY only point is that no system is 100% fair. If the playoffs started today, nzoner is in under both systems. Under the current record based system Reefer Madness is the 5 seed and nzoner is the 6 seed, and i am first team out of the playoffs.. Under the system proposed by the OP, both nzoner and I (at 5-4) both jump Reefer who is 6-3. How is that fair? He has the same record as the #3 seed, but loses a tiebreaker with #3 and #4 based on points scored, then gets booted from the playoffs altogether because two teams with lesser records scored more also? So based entirely on points scored, he goes from tied for third to out of the playoffs? Sorry i'll take a team being the 5th highest scoring team missing the playoffs based on H2H record every time in that scenario, even if its me.

Yeah, that's the magic of the 14 team league. The simplicity of the scheduling with 13 opponents in a 13 week regular season. No divisions and a complete round robin. Now that I think about it, why mess with that? Maybe it's best to play with this concept in a different sized league where things aren't so cut and dry.

I'm third highest scorer in one league, and am 4-5. It is what it is, and it depends upon how much 'luck' your league wants to allow.

Simple...you have a 12 team league....the top 6 scorers each week get a win...bottom six get a loss...then u grade each head to head matchup....it's nto perfect but pretty fair....u can't complain completely about your terrible luck in your random schedule....you still have a shot to hang around if you are scoring

We have this discussion every year. Our league is a 14-team league and the top 6 make the championship bracket. The top 5 are by record and the 6th seed is the highest scorer of the remaining 9 teams. It seems that this is 50/50 among our owners. I am the commissioner and we had a season a while back where our leading scorer didn't make the championship round. The reasons for taking this route include:

1) We play head-to-head; so much of how you score are the matchups your players have, injuries, injuries during games, etc.

2) What is the one thing you can control? Who you put in your lineup to maximize your points.

3) You have no control over what your opponent scores.

4) The best team usually isn't the one with the best record - it's the team that's scored more but maybe has had some bad luck.

This seems to work for us. We haven't had the leading scorer not reach the championship round since the rule's inception, but the rule means that many teams are still in contention for the 6th spot in week #13 (our last week).

I have the top points with a 4-5 record right now, on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. Lost two times to the top scorer of the week, while totaling the second most points. It happens, and I hope the luck swings my way the next few weeks...
