Restaurants on Tv

Recommended Posts

Any of you been to some of those restaurants they feature on tv shows like Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives? I love eating good food and wish I could do a show of my own where I just travel around and eat food like Guy Fieri or the guy off of Man vs Food. A couple restaurants here in San Antonio have been featured on them such as Dough pizzeria, Moroccan Bites, and LuLus cafe (they have 5 pound cinnamon rolls) that I have eaten at and would recommend to anyone.

There's a place in Austin that I haven't tried yet cause they don't take reservations and apparently you have to wait 2 hours to get a table. Place is called Franklins BBQ. Obama flew down here and rented the place so he could eat it. Never heard of it til I wanted to eat good BBQ joints. Another BBQ joint here that is amazing is Salt Lick. These places were on Pit Masters I believe. Delicious BBQ

Salt Lick is really good. I've also eaten at Magnolia Cafe in Austin. That one was one DDD.

Been to a couple others in the SD/OC area that were on DDD.

Salt lick is good, but you have to go on the off peak hours, I'm not going to wait in that line

Between Santa Rosa (where guy fieri is from) and San Diego iv been to many places on DDD and other food network shows. Nothin really of note. Im sure the networks simply take bids from these places to feature them on their shows since any place thats on a show blows up in popularity.

Yah, it gets pretty nutty. I'm not a Texas native, so it's worth the wait, when we're in town visiting the in laws.

Last time we went to a place just outside Austin called Southside Market and BBQ. They had really good smoked sausage, but the brisket wasn't as good as Salt Lick.

I remember he went to El Indio in SD. That place isn't even good. All of this authentic Mexican food in The border area, and he goes to the most Americanized generic one.

Couple places here in Denver. Sams III, which is solid. Not worth waiting an hour for, the usual weekend morning wait. Also, the Bagel Shop. Solid Jew place. Got my first black and white cookie there.

Salt lick has some of the best brisket I've ever had. Took my parents there and my dad couldn't get enough of it. My other brother in law (have two older sisters) is a chef and went to a couple different cooking schools. He has been dying to go to either franklins or salt lick cause he has heard so much about them.

i believe that there are still a decent amount of restaurants omitted from that site that i have visited. just cannot place them.

i am sure i have been to more in colorado, new york, las vegas, maui, and san francisco that are not mentioned and i cannot recall the show.

and i have a love/hate for bourdain. he did a show about sf. he mentioned quite a few of my places.... they then became very crowded and changed the atmosphere. so.... he was correct to mention them, just ruined it for the local who liked to go.

generally speaking, most of the places i have been has been before exposure on tv. i am driven to try new places based on chef or local reputation (sources that do not end in elp). it is very rare that i go out of my way to try a place because i have seen it on a show. an example: i do not recall the show, but a place in utah makes 7 or 8 moles. if i am every nearby, i would want to try that. i have not been to new orleans since 96 or so. from misc shows i know that i like what john besh does and want to try his restaurants. i have been a fan of ming tsai for a very long time, but missed hitting his restaurants when i was in boston 12 years ago.

like i said- love/hate for bourdain. he knows his stuff, mentioned the right restaurants... but exposes them. some return to pre-spotlight status, some do not.

Salt Lick is alright I guess - but imo it's not in the same league as Louie Mueller BBQ... Many say Franklin's is the best in the state, in the country in fact - but it all goes back to Louie Mueller.

Louie Mueller started selling Que out of his store there in Taylor, Texas - it soon took off.... Louie had a son - Bobby. Bobby in turn had a son - John. John soon ventured out on his own, but booze and drugs ended his run. Back then a kid named Aaron Franklin worked for John Mueller... A. Franklin ended up buying John Mueller's pit and started out on his own - the rest is history.

I know Texas bbq - and I've never had any better than Mueller or Franklin's. Make sense they were cut from the same philosophies.

johnny garlic's (guy fieri)

He opened up one of these where I live a few years ago. Gotta say, I was unimpressed. Maybe I expected a little more from a "celebrity chef" but it was just ok. I know he's not in the kitchen but it is his brand. Haven't been back.

I wanna try it just for the experience. Honestly, I like going to places that have been On tv shows like that. I find it fun and the food is usually good.

If you're just going for the novelty of it you probably won't be disappointed.

I naively expected the food to be a step up from the standard chain restaurants. It was but not by much. Certainly not enough to justify the higher prices.

There's a Black Angus in the same mall here. Much better food for the price. I didn't expect that. :dunno:

I also do want the food to be good lol. I make it a point to take my wife out at least once a month to an expensive, good restaurant. Trying out new ones on shows like triple D is just something fun we like to do.

Pretty sure John got back on his feet and in a twist of fate bought the Franlin Pit when he updgraded.

Yea - John has the John Mueller Meat Co. - I think for a year or two now. I've yet to visit his new place but I will soon. I'm glad he's doing well - he has a great legacy to carry on.

I once visited a place called Benny's in Miami based on Guy's recommendation on Best Things I Ever Ate(?). We tried this Mofungo stuff that he said he could not get enough of, it was awfully disgusting. No taste and just plain bland. Another time I ate at a food cart in Key West only to return home and see it featured on DDD. The place is Garbos and it consistently is kick ass every time I eat there. When on vacation the first thing that comes to my mind is what restaurants have been featured on TV shows and that foodmaps site gives good info.

Great read for sure.

Everyone is partial to their environment and thinks their style of bbq is the best. I'm no different - I think Texas has the best, but I certainly would not begrudge someone from thinking their state has better. I'm definitely not a big fan of the Kansas City style - the thick, sweet, tomato based sauce is not appealing at all. To me, if you have to slather it in sauce - you're hiding something.

My flavor profile is: mostly salt & pepper, pecan & hickory wood, 275 degree smoke, vinegar/mustard/ketchup base sauce on the side. And I do inject some of my meats.

went to the sonoma county fair today. decided to give it another try (as it is pretty close to where we were going). it was very good today.... mrs and I shared an apricot glazed citrus chicken sandwich and a lava rock shrimp. after the meal i was chatting with our waiter and told him about our previous experiences. he said about a year to a year and a half ago they went through rough patch in the kitchen....many left and they had no manager. from today i would go back...though it is a little overpriced.

Pizzeria Lola is 5 blocks away from us. Small neighborhood joint...maybe 25 tables, counting the patio. They have neopolitan pizza with an Asian flare. Damn good food. But since it has been on DDD, you can't get a focking table. Every time we try to go there, it is a 90min wait.

During my Chicago vacation, I ate at the "world famous" Superdawg.

Meh.

It's only world famous if you tip them $20 and ask for a chocolate shake
