Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists

Recommended Posts

Without clicking the link, I'm sure the list is terrible (as far as placement), as most Rolling Stone top 100s usually are.

You and I know guitar, Frank. We understand. We can hear Jimmi even though we know that Jimmi is overated.

I wonder if Kurt Cobain is on their list.

This was probably posted before but I don't see it.

notable snubs:

Kirk Hammett

Buckethead

Steve Vai

Yngwie Malmsteen

Adrian Smith

Glenn Tipton/KK Downing

Malmsteen and Vai are top fifty. The technical aspect alone makes them innovators that shaped the landscape. Vai has three degrees in music and Malmsteen took classical guitar to a level never seen before.

Typical garbage list from RS.

I know nothing about playing the guitar or what makes one guy better than the next....... But are the Edge and Neal Schon not considered all that great compared to the rest? :dunno:

I like the Edge, but I've heard from other guitarists that he's not all that. :dunno:

But Neil Schon is! :headbanger:

I'll look through this list again, but seriously, RS has rarely been on point with the people.

18 of the top 100 players are pictured with Fender Stratocasters. Two more players not shown holding them are mainly Stratocaster players who have their on artist models of the Stratocaster in current production.

You just can't beat the tone. :music_guitarred:

Interesting. I absolutely love my USA Strat with the humbucker in the bridge. I've had Les Pauls, Jacksons, and loads of other junk over the years, but this is the best all around guitar I've ever had.

We started rehearsing for our Xmas show last week and I thought I might need a Jackson or something with a faster neck to play all this Trans Siberain stuff, but this strat is working out just fine.

Hmm. It looks a lot like Brian May's' guitar that he made for himself, but that doesn't make sense. I gotta go with Gibson, even though it doesn't look like one.

EVH should be #1 period.

No Joe Satriani is a travesty. He's super technical but he can play and he's got soul to it as well (whereas I don't think Vai does).

OK....just scrolled down a bit further.

#89 Bonnie Raitt

That's like putting Miley Cyrus in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I'll bet Siouxsie works for Rolling Stone.

The biggest snub on this list is Phil Collen and Steve Clark, aka the Terror Twins.

How in the hell can you have a list of the top 100 guitarists and not have either one of them on it? Jan Kuehnemund (Vixen) is another snub.

I love when these are released and people come out of the woodwork with their token shredder dude who's not on the list, and then say idiotic crap like The Edge doesn't belong. Focking clueless.

I like Brian May the best, and I could care less where he is on any list.

That list is about 100 times better.

Well one is a liberal douche-bag magazine and the other is for guitar players.

Also, I don't get the Brian May love. Never liked Queen.

But I do love great musicians and can appreciate great guitar playing (not just speed).

Anybody have a recommendation on something I can listen to of his?

May is one of the greats. Technically gifted, but also very melodic and a great songwriter. He's also a craftsman and a tone innovator. These things all matter.
