Why do evangelics love Trump?

Recommended Posts

He's doing great among evangelicals, even better than Cruz who has basically directed his campaign towards that voting bloc.

He's been married three times, used to be a liberal, supported abortion in the past, and obviously isn't a religious guy.

So why's he doing so well? Is it his anti-PC schtick? Is there some reason evangelicals feel particularly threatened by PC culture that they're voting for him even though he isn't one of their own?

:dunno:

Same reason Hispanics (who are overwhelmingly Catholic) voted Dem last two elections.

They value the other stuff more.

That doesn't really make sense though because evenagelicals love Trump more than other groups do. So it's not that they are deciding not to vote as evangelicals, it's that something about him really appeals to them as a voting bloc.

I'm genuinely curious what the appeal is. I can't help but think that most evangelicals are white and Trump is playing the dog whistle politics except its a bullhorn instead blaring about how he's going to beat down the Muslims and the Mexicans, and maybe that appeals to that voting bloc? I dunno, that's a pretty harsh take on it so I am open to a more charitable explanation.

Because a lot of Evangelicals are dumb. HTH

This is actually what I think too (which might seem weird?) but I think it's his jingoistic tones and black and white thinking (not that there aren't some things it's good to be black and white about) that resonate the most, and also going by appearances - not seeing his pandering as the incredibly transparent pandering it is. That's more confidence rousing than anything particularly anti-Catholic, which I don't think was suggested until only recently anyway.

This is correct.

Trump offers the same thing religion does... Simple answers for simple minds. Is it any wonder the same people eat both up?

I don't know either. I was just saying that people rank the "issues" or what is most important to them in an order when picking the person that appeals to them most and somtimes its counterintuitive.

For example most Hispanics are Catholic. Hence they would be, generally speaking, pro life and anti-ghey marriage. However the last few election cycles the Dems seemed more soft or "tolerant" on illegal immigration than the GOP. Thus the Dems won the Hispanic vote. Immigration trumped the issues more closely tied to religion.

My guess is that's sort of the same with your question. Even though Donald isn't the best choice for strictly religious issues he appeals in other ways.

Personally nothing appeals to me about Trump so I don't know why anybody likes the guy as President.

Why is anyone supporting Trump? I'm stuck on that question.

Reasons I would consider voting for Trump:

1. His campaign is self funded and he's therefore less likely to be in the pocket of either party or lobbyists.

2. I suspect he is much more moderate than the GOP field in general.

3. The other candidates are so bad, he's sort of a Hail Mary vote.

4. I'm disgusted with the political process and voting Trumo is the "burn this mother focker down" vote.

5. For the lolz.

Not one of those five things says anything about the issues or problems we face.

1. Trump is beyond inexperienced.

2. He is a whiner and a bully. Those normally go hand in hand.

3. He doesn't even know the issues, let alone has a platform. His platform is: "I'm great, it's gonna be huge, and we're gonna make it great again!"

4. He's a fraud

5. I judge Trump supporters like I do people with neck tattoos. Automatic assumption of low IQ.

6. We don't even know his plans on any type of precision. It's all general weird promises.

Bottom line: People are voting with their emotions and checking their brain at the door.

Pretty obvious no ? Trump is a windbag, and an , but he isn't one of them.

Fiscal policy trumps religion....even for evangelicals

I'm certainly NOT a Trump supporter and I won't be a Trump voter. But the rest of his opponents have no real plans either. Sure they say they do but they are trying to get elected rich. I agree Trump hasn't laid out any plans but all a President does is surround himself with thinkers and doers and Trump has done that in business. People are tired of politicians and that's why he's doing well and one of the reasons Hillary is not. Bernie has great ideas but they're unrealistic. Kasich could be the next President. But I think Hillary will.

Catholics as a whole in the US favor legal abortion over making it illegal. The church may be against but US Catholics aren't the fervent religious types like evangelicals. Catholics tended to be democrats before but now they are spread in both parties. I don't think there really is a Catholic voting block. Catholics don't vote their religion.

I disagree. Religious belief does not imply stupidity; however, the evangelical strain is particularly unphilosophical and generally attracts dumb folks

Hillary is probably going to get the nomination. I think Nevada was almost a must-win for Bernie and he didn't get it.

She's going to lose the general election though. People don't like her and they don't trust her. That's a loser right there no matter how good your policies are or anything else.

No. YOU don't like her. I think you're going to be surprised how man people will vote for her over the republican choices. Whether they like her or not. Not many people liked Cheney and he became President.

I like Trump for his views on campaign finance reform and not getting sucked deeper into the Middle East. He's the most likely candidate to end gridlock. He may well be a moderate for all I know, the others sure aren't.

Mostly, I think he's going to make the Republican Party great again. I viscerally hate the bought, borrow-and-spend, Bible thumping chickenhawks that ran the country into the ground and Trump is a political hand grenade ready to blow it all up. He's got the corrupt Bushtards sh1tting their pants. I love it. It's great. Give him four years to provide an enema and get his people to replace the turds stinking up the nation's right wing party.

Polls show people don't like her and don't trust her. You're right that I don't like her but you're wrong in suggesting that I'm in the minority and you're wrong in suggesting that it doesn't matter if people like her.

Cheney wasn't president, W was. And people liked W -- remember how he was the guy you wanted to have a beer with??

When it comes down to 1 dem and 1 rep in the end, people will choose who they think will make the best president or vote against who they think worst choice. I think people may start drifting toward Hillary in the end, especially if Bill can still turn on his charm.

I am not a Hillary supporter but in the end, I think she will win.

Most Blacks in my state are Southern Baptist. 90 % plus of AA's vote Democrat.

My point is sometimes other things trump religion (pun intended).

Bush (W) era republicans were not particularly bible-thumping in my memory/impression. I remember almost everyone who wasn't a neocon, which seemed like most everyday people, were wary of ###### Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. My definitely bible thumping evangelical friend who joined the army after Sept. 11th had absolutely no love for them. In the community I knew him from (a church...so full of evangelicals) there was no one singing neoconservatives' praises.

No candidate has ever won the presidency with a negative favorability rating.

Last I heard Hillary was at -10% on favorability.

And I don't think that's going to get better.

Now if it's Trump or Cruz on the other side, maybe it doesn't matter because those two are just awful.

But Rubio? Or even Kasich? She loses

Yes, the evangelical strain is worse for stupid arrogance.

Yes, I think religion is largely a dumping ground for the stupid.

But often smart people end up there through two decades or so of brainwashing.

I am pretty convinced that there. Aremajor bombshells waiting for both Clinton and trunmp. The respective parties are just keeping them reserved until and unless they get the nomination.

I would see anthropomorphizing Muppet Bernie Sanders being the least likely To have Scandal in his closet.

Well Hillary has been in the media and political spotlight for two decades. Hard to believe no stone has been unturned. And even the stones turned like like the emails don't mean much.

And Trump. It doesn't matter. He told the dummies already. He said: "I could murder a person in Times Square and still get votes!"

And he's right. :(

Doesn't matter if you are fundie Christian or a fundie Muslim, Fundies Are intellectually Stupid.

The term 'fundie' is thrown around pretty indiscriminately. If "fundie" is defined as someone who believes in the core tenants of their faith and what it reports history to be in its holy text(s), as truth, versus having fluid, culturally fluctuating, affinity for the faith, then fundies have varying levels of intellect. Someone like Michael Faraday would be a fundie under that definition.

This is why they do. They work hard, pay their taxes, live within their means, don't ask for anything, and expect others to do the same. They give to those in need inside their own communities. They have good hearts and are tired of being labeled as those who do not. And they are sick of it. I saw first hand their outreach to New Orleans after Katrina. They are good people. Misguided sometimes, but good folks.

They're tired of being betrayed. Both sides. Now is their time to share a voice. And their voice is a fawk you to DC Policians. TheFU being their main voice. And it's said through a man who has listened to them and they relate. Very simple stuff with a very simple idea. Enough already.

Right or wrong, it's a powerful message that Trump has based his message on in a platform that resonates.

The right may be tired of voting for weak candidates as the left were and are smarting up. Incrimantle politics are a thing of the past. And they see that?

The uneducated left is no different than the right. They vote ideals or what's in their best interest. And that seems to be changing. We shall see.

Please do not interpret my utter disdain for the unwashed masses on the right for an endorsement of the rabble on the left.

Fact of the matter is, to win an election, you need lots of idiots. Both sides have their collection.
