Anyone ever get a hole in their oil filter just by driving on the road?

Recommended Posts

So, I get in my truck the other day and hear it ticking as I am going down the road. Go to the nearest gas station immediately to check the oil. It did not even register on the dipstick. I focking freaked out and put two quarts in it which filled it back up. This was just on Thursday when I filled it back up.

WTF???

Tell my dad and he says he will look at it, which he did today, Saturday. My dad is in his 60s too, always thought I would being doing this stuff for him, not the other way around. :(

He found the problem. A focking hole in the oil filter and he said my truck was leaving a trail of oil. It was squirting out the hole in the oil filter. My truck does not leak or burn oil. Oil was very low again already too, so he went ahead and did an oil change too.

Anyone ever had this happen before???

I asked my dad if ever had something like this happen and he said nope but he did say it was possible that something on the road caused it. I have had many cars and use to work on them all the time and never had anything like this happen. I have done a lot to vehicles over the years. Everything from changing breaks to changing engines and rear ends.

I am wondering if someone sabotaged my truck by poking a hole in the oil filter. I guess it is possible something flew up from driving down the road, but it seems a little odd.

Anyone ever have this happen to their vehicle or know of someone else who may have had it happen to theirs??? I do not drive this truck off the road or anything like that either.

What does the hole look like? Does it look like it was cut open with a knife or had a screw driver pushed into it? An object that got kicked up from the road would probably leave a rougher, less controlled gash.

 I need to take a look at it. I just talked with him about it, have not seen it the filter yet.

As far as I know, it just had a slight dent in it at the spot where the hole was. Those things are easy to dent like that, as I have stabbed one with a screwdriver myself before trying to get one off. Needed some leverage. lol

Occam's Razor says that most likely it was something from the road; it seems unlikely that somebody would crawl under your truck to poke a hole in your oil filter, when there are both simpler and more damaging ways to fock with your truck. :dunno:

I highly doubt it was sabotage. We run over things that cause damage daily and nothing bad happens. Every once in a while, it does.

Check the puncture mark and see if it was clean. Just like you would a tire. If it's aerated, it's something you ran over.

I've had my oil level sensor get banged up and quit working, such that my car was informing me that it was low on engine oil when it in fact was not. But the sensor is down by the drip pan I guess.

What kinda prickish things do you do that you suspect someone is trying to sabotage you?

Well now there's no need to bring Ronda Rousey into it. :dunno:

Worse. I got a hole in the air compressor. On my wife's car. She b!tched about that for years. Every time we hit a patch of gravel in the road, she'd bring it up. Tell me to drive more carefully.

Oh god. I can only imagine how old that got. Women love to do that shlt. My wife still brings up ab evening when her head was in my lap, i let go of a ridiculously horrible fart (i didnt know it was going to be atomicly bad) and she got a huge face full of it. She brings it up even though its been like 8 years. Of course i start laughing when she brings it up. Then she gets mad that im laughing, so i tell her to stop bringing it up and i will stop laughing at it.

It's your oil pan not your filter and it's common to catch something in the road. If someone wanted to mess with your car they'd just pee in your gas tank

It was not the oil pan, just the filer. After looking at it, I do not think it was sabotage.

Only reason I did wonder is because of my neighbor who I helped in the hospital last summer. She went back with her ex and he has a major problem with me, sending me text messages and shtt going nuts. They just moved away recently and I am expecting him to come back and get stupid.

Should've kicked her out the door at 50 mph after year 1 of that b!tching. :dunno:

Sounds like you could set your raccoon trap and he would get a leg stuck in it

If it was your filter, sometimes the gasket from the last one gets stuck on and when they screw in the new one the double gasket doesn't let it seat properly and it leaks

Not really, which is why I have never posted them before. He is nuts though. Once when I was over there with them all, he was cool with me for a while, he told their children "Did you guys know your mom killed your brother by having an abortion." The kids were 14, 14, and 10 at the time. The 10 year old started crying and Penny told me to leave immediately. I went home. I always have my police scanner on and it was not 5 minutes later, one of the 14 year old twins called the police because mom and dad were in a fist fight.

She kicked him out that time and he was gone for months. She let him come back again and he stole two of the kids' prescriptions. One is on lortabs and the other is on ritalin. She kicked him out again and said he was never coming back only to see him back inside of a month. lol

He threatened to kill them all more than once too. I would not be surprised if I wake up one day and that is the lead in the local news, Man kills wife and kids in murder suicide. :(

It was constant drama with those two. They are now back together and moved away, thank God.

There is actually a small hole on the gripper part of the oil filter on the bottom of the filter. By bottom, I mean where you could put that special big socket thing when you remove them. Dad said he could see it squirting out the hole while it was running.

I forgot about Facebook. She had defriended me already, so I forgot to block it.

So the other day, she sends me a friend request. I accepted and we chatted for a few.

It was nice. Seems like the anger and resentment has faded on both sides and we can both just move on.

She sent a picture of the Kat (the four legged kind). I miss that little fur ball.
