MDC 7,411 Posted June 7, 2017 Since death is inevitable, might as well enjoy the extra beer daily. I mean, what kind of sissy drinks less than two beers a day? I would never call someone a sissy for not drinking.
penultimatestraw 473 Posted June 7, 2017 I would never call someone a sissy for not drinking. I know, but you're well aware drinking, especially beer, is considered masculine in our culture and others. And for some bizarre reason, people are proud of the amount they can drink - this isn't the case for just about every other addictive substance.

iam90sbaby 2,610 Posted June 7, 2017 I didn't make the definitions. They are made by a panel of addiction experts, derived in part from the risk of complications of habitual alcohol use. I figured many of you didn't know what was considered excessive alcohol use; it isn't based on what's "cool" or convenient. And societal acceptance doesn't equate to healthy behavior. This is funny coming from a guy that got a gym membership and didn't use it for five months and only then did he realize the gym had been closed, and came to a message board and bragged about getting his money returned to him. Bier Meister 1,710 Posted June 7, 2017 what would be a concern to all are abuse and dependence. a half bottle of wine is approx 2.5 5 oz glasses. over the course of an evening, that does not seem excessive. we would need to know how this impacts social, occupational, physical functioning. is it causing harm? how? and to what degree? jerryskids 6,792 Posted June 7, 2017 I like to think that penny trolls me about the drinking because he views me as someone at this place who may actually change my behaviors. But hey, my FIL is in his 80s and drinks well over a bottle of wine per night. And he is fat, diabetic, can barely move around... wait, that doesn't help my point. Anyway, I'm not getting any younger. I'm also overdue for a physical and although I feel great and my Fitbit says I'm an olympic athlete for my age (heart rate, activity level, sleep, etc.), there could be things going on inside I don't know about. TheNewGirl 1,490 Posted June 7, 2017 I won't lie in that I drink frequently. My favorite is usually wine, beer is meh. I'd reach for the hard stuff (vodka) before a beer. I can drink about 3 glasses of wine before feeling a little tipsy. How often? Depends. Might be once a week. Might be 4 or 5. I am slightly overweight, so I know that stopping drinking would help with this a lot. However, my BP is great. I am a marathoner/triathlete and while I might not be an elite, I get the done and I feel good after. I occassionally lift weights/strength train. I don't drinking during working hours and often have an issue drinking during the day (unless it's like a mimosa or something); but if it's like noon and we are at someone's house, I don't really immediately start drinking. Even in the evening, it's tough for me to drink before 4 or 5PM sometimes. Mine I believe is mostly about habit; I cook and while I cook, I usually drink wine. Then I drink wine with dinner, etc. It's been a while since I have been totally bombed out of my mind and puked and blacked out; I haven't blacked out in YEARS. Some might read all that and think, alcoholic. Meh. Whatever. Worry about yo'self.
TimmySmith 2,782 Posted June 7, 2017 The list sucks and really should be entitled, "can you handle your booze". I love to drink but discovered many years ago that I can't really be addicted to anything. So alcoholics are born, not made. As much as I drink, and love to drink and want to drink, I am a lightweight at this place. Shotsup is the real deal.

You need to work on reading comprehension. I used the membership multiple days a week for ~ four months. I went out of town for almost a month, during which time I exercised almost every day, but returned to find the gym was closed. I wasn't bragging about getting my money back. I was impressed by the cc company's customer service, hence the title of that thread. And nobody is perfect with healthy behavior, but if you knew anything about me, you'd know I practice what I preach.

BunnysBastatrds 2,439 Posted June 8, 2017 It amazes me people think life can't be fun without alcohol. I grew up in an environment fueled by drinking. From day one. There was never a party or occasion that alcohol wasn't involved. I know New Orleans isn't the only town in America that has this social status or stigma, but we are what we are. A drinking town. We have drive thru daiquiri bars where you get off of work and can order a 190 Octane like you do a number 2 at Burger King. There are no liquor stores. You can buy alcohol 24/7 at gas stations. I met Sam Kinnison right before he died. He was explaining how to get alcohol after 2:00 AM. "Hire a limo. They are fully stocked with booze. Me: This bar won't close till 5:00 and you can cross the street to the 7/12 and get a fifth of anything your heart desires. He missed his flight. I know many who aren't alcoholics. But they drink when the time is right. I rode in the biggest parade New Orleans hosts, for ten years. There were 250 riders on our float, The only ones who got off sober were ones in AA. And they were few and far between. It's just how it is.

What floats your boat? I enjoy staying active, and surround myself mostly with people who do the same. None of them are miserable. One of my two friends on antidepressants leads an unhealthy lifestyle, and the other has always been a negative person. Some people are truly born that way. But for the rest of us, I'll take habits that promote health every time over things that make you temporarily "high" to escape reality. Those never lead to long term happiness, for yourself or loved ones.
MDC 7,411 Posted June 8, 2017 You know what is? Denial. I am sure a doctor wouldn't approve of my drinking but I seriously don't see it as an issue. At least, I'd guess that my odds of acquiring a drinking-related disease are closer to yours than say Bunny Bastards'. I never actually get the sense that you post this stuff in an effort to educate anyone here. I think that's because of the sort of hectoring tone: "Don't blame ME if you get a disease!" That and you always seem to segue into talking about you and your diet, your rock climbing and activities etc. Mostly I think you're one of those "It's all about Meeeeeee!!!" types and you see a thread with some sort of vaguely medical topic and feel compelled to demonstrate your expertise. You're a doctor: We get it.
