Cloaca du jour 2,149 Posted July 11, 2017 When did this become a thing? I can see tipping delivery but now people are tipping for carryout?? Have you guys heard of such foolishness?
cyclone24 1,913 Posted July 11, 2017 I've heard of it but I never do it. I don't tip at buffets either. I'm not chipping you off 20% because you brought me two cokes.
tanatastic 2,062 Posted July 11, 2017 Nope, never tip for carry out. Tip is for service, not the privilege of eating your food.

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted July 11, 2017 That is why nobody answers the carry out phone at many restaurants. The servers don't want to put time ignoring the peope who will tip them to bag up your food.

MTSkiBum 1,620 Posted July 11, 2017 Great thread, I have been wondering the same thing. I tip 10% for carryout, now i do not feel bad. I order banh mi sandwiches from a Vietnamese shop every other week, and since I am such a regular I tip 15%, but they are the exception.

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted July 11, 2017 A show of hands of those who've worked in a reastaunt or bar who rely on tips. Me. I was a waiter at Cracker Barrel. The chick would transfer to go orders to the back, and we would never answer, as they never tipped. Then they installed a freaking strobe light and a ships bell thing to the phone. Made it harder to ignore. Waffle House automatically added a 20% gratuity to to go orders, which went straight to the servers pocket. They were all about taking to go orders. wiffleball 4,790 Posted July 11, 2017 I've held just about every Service Industry job that didn't require a skirt and a push up bra. I am a huge tipping proponent. For example, even if the server is slow on bringing drinks - keep your eyes open - Most of the time it's the slow-axx BT's that are holding her up. If so, tip her well anyway. But this? Oh fock no. While takeout may not be a direct cash drop into his/her pocket, its the best thing for her employer - and often, her. There's no overhead on dishes, dishwashing,no tables to bus, no water to refill, etc. And with the mark up on food? It's damn near pure profit. Not to mention,it frees the server up to serve in-house, tip-paying customers. There's a mindset in the service industry that if the money doesn't go directly to them, it somehow doesn't count. But, to the extent that it keeps the employer in business (and thus, you employed) with a minimum of work, overhead and time spent, it's a good thing. If they put silver down, I'll drop that as a tip - but only bc I don't want it to rattle in my pocket. Now, if they throw in some lagniappe, then it's a whole nother calculus. I think the etiquette is ~10% for buffets. In addition to bringing you drinks, they bus the tables at the minimum.
titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted July 11, 2017 Did you ever get passed one star ?? I think I was a two star when I left. It's amazing how corporatized that place is. They had a classroom in the back and a full time hr trainer. When you had been there long enough, you could take the test for a star.

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted July 11, 2017 It's the most generic food on earth. It's not my favorite, although there are a few things I like there. But it was a town of 20,000 students, waiting jobs were hard to come by, as people with experience (I had none) and hot chicks tend to get the good restaurants. I took the job that called me back. It wasn't bad. Tables turn fast, so that's good.

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted July 11, 2017 What about when a bus load of silver haired Jew ladies showed up ? No rent was made that shift. Jew ladies rarely wander into random Tennessee cracker barrell. Our other demographic that was a problem was the promise keepers and other Jesus freaks. They tip like sh!t, act like d!cks, and leave insulting little bible tracts, some of which are designed to appear to be a $20 bill.
shotsup 832 Posted July 11, 2017 Yeah makes sense. Last year went to one in CT on I95 and got stuck behind a bus of said ladies. Probably a junket from NYC to Foxwoods Casino.

The PosterFormerlyKnownAs 78 Posted July 11, 2017 Plenty of food service experience, mostly with guaranteed gratuity from checks. Very generous tipper, including many take out occasions. Directly proportionate to the service ... was their a welcome, things packed and labeled well ... did they offer me a seat or drink while I waited ... timeliness ... was good made to order/special request? Appropriate amount of condiments/napkins/silverware? Did they make the experience pleasant? Happy ending? (Wait ... wrong establishment category.) Don't be crass and stingy. If the place is a takeout joint, probably not, but if it's an eat-in place that accommodates take-out, support the staff who do a good job while getting stiffed out of tips by having you walk in and walk out with what is often a lower than average purchase (fewer drinks, upsells, etc.)
Alias Detective 1,400 Posted July 11, 2017 One more pet peeve of mine around tipping. The buck for opening a beer bottle bartender guy. I pay 3 bucks for a 75 cent beer and then feel compelled to leave an extra buck for what again!

frank 2,306 Posted July 11, 2017 One of my favorite threads ever was a tipping thread where I started quoting reservoir dogs and a couple of people didn't get it and thought I was being a jerk. Don't tip for takeout. Definitely tip at a buffet. It's usually little old ladies busting their ass picking up gross used plates.
Kopy 568 Posted July 11, 2017 Depends how I take it out. If I just grab it and go. Never. But if I'm sitting at a bar having a beer while it's being made, then yes.

I'm anti tip system, and I agree with you. That said, since we have a tip system, why should the waitress get tipped for bringing the meal to your table, but not get tipped for putting it in to go boxes, bagging it up, putting sauces and condiments into to go ramikins. Putting the to go silverware in, and THEN bringing it to you? It's more work for her, and she doesn't really give a Fock where you choose to eat it, other than the fact that you're not taking up one of the tables that pays her bills.
