I have to wonder, was the kid maybe mentally retarded or something, why in gods name would he run when the cop just told him they were looking for suspects with a gun? The only thing that makes any sense is he was not right in the head and panicked.....

I am pro police.  However running from police should not warrant deadly force.  This is awful.  It’d be 100% different if he ran at the cops and posed a threat.

Did you guys not see the kid reaching for his waistband as the video ends? Guy was acting twitchy with his pockets and as it turns out did have a gun on him.

A more complete video included in link below (at the 10:40 mark). It shows the kid reaching into his shorts, NOT pumping his arms as if he were just running.

Could this shooting have been avoided? Most certainly by the kid i.e. don't run. Was it justified? Coin toss but my deference will most always go to the guy putting his life on the line for the community.

I didn't read the article but the headline states 'black teen'.  Why is race suddenly important?

Cop was there, knew something was up, and as it turns out, he was right.  We are watching grainy video from our easy chair.  Sucks for everyone that the kid ran.

Misconception made by many... just because you are not a threat to the cops (i.e., running away from them), it doesn't mean you're not a threat to somebody else.  If you have a gun, you are a threat, period.

The key is probable cause, not merely suspicion or common sense.  This one is gonna be sketchy.  To reach prob cause it has to be probable that a certain person committed a certain crime.  Not that simply a crime was comitted.  If that kid did in fact ID himself as Spazz, one could argue that PC had been reached based on that and the 911 caller.

As for the shooting, cops can shoot fleeing people in the back.  Its a narrow window, but legal.  Tennessee vs Garner aka the "fleeing felon".

Where the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a threat of serious physical harm, either to the officer or to others, it is not constitutionally unreasonable to prevent escape by using deadly force. Thus, if the suspect threatens the officer with a weapon or there is probable cause to believe that he has committed a crime involving the infliction or threatened infliction of serious physical harm, deadly force may be used if necessary to prevent escape, and if, where [471 U.S. 1, 12]  feasible, some warning has been given. As applied in such circumstances, the Tennessee statute would pass constitutional muster.

If they were the two in question then I think the shooting is slam dunk 100% legit.

If they were not then I am back to this really sucks, no should not have run, no should not have had a gun, but are kids honestly this stupid? I mean, what about "the talk" that every minority claims they are the only ones who have to do?   When I had the same exact talk with my kids they seemed to understand....

Have you seen how the cops were treated recently in New York or this week during the standoff in Philadelphia. There is a lot of blatant disrespect for cops. How many times have we seen people get shot by cops because they didn't listen to what the cops were asking them to do and reached for a weapon. That kid would be alive if he would have listened to the cops.

I’m conflicted. The kid disobeyed orders, ran and had a gun on him, but I don’t see where the officers were ever in danger that required deadly force.

I am not sure the officers were, but the next citizen might have been, the cops better damn well stop him...I dont want some idiot shooting someone I know...

Don't have time to read or listen to everything, but it seems they were the robbers and the one guy took a chance to flee and got shot. It's sad, but if you rob and run from the police...

He was young and maybe thought he could out run the police officers and that they wouldn't shoot him because he wasn't threatening them. He must not have been watching the news lately.
