Why would anyone become a teacher now?

Recommended Posts

Too many teachers are activists and push that in their teaching.  The originator of this bill is taking a "just teach facts" approach, and the activists have twisted it into "being neutral on nazis".  Take activism out of the classrooms and this all goes away.

I guess we'll find out.  Seems like a bad idea to me but I don't get to make those decisions.   I can just imagine how awful it's going to be for teachers having to put up with crazy parents even more than they do now.

Even worse for kids having to put up with crazy teachers.

Like Fireballer said, she's got the rainbow flag and pronouns in her bios which are clues that she is an activist and likely the problem herself that the parents don't want.

How would anything ever get done then?  There has to be a common curriculum nationwide.  What you want kids to learn may not be what the majority of other parents want and the same goes for everyone else.  What they are suggesting adds so much more stress to an already stressful occupation.

Why does everyone think teaching is so stressful? They get like 4 months off every year. I always hear:

"Well how would you like to have to deal with 20 kids all day?!?!!?"

I don't want to, which is why I'm not a teacher. Teachers want to, which is why they are teachers.

How about they just go back to teaching reading, writing, math, science, history, and add in common sense basic money management (or, how to stay out of debt and save).

Agree 100% with this

Not everyone has many choices to where they send their kids to school unless they move.  More and more schools have been closing over the years and more and more states are having teacher shortages.  I don't see how this will improve it.

Why? Pension, benefits, summers and every holiday off, snow days, winter break, spring break. To name a few

I agree with this.  I understand that's why so many people like the proposed bill but I just think it causes more problems.  I didn't make this thread to defend "woke" teaching.

Bump

Thirded.  This looks like one of those lists like "the way this bill is written if a man is on fire and you piss on him to put him out you can be arrested for giving him drinking water in the voting line$#@!" You can't teach that Nazis had bad morals, wha?

Anyway, trying to ferret out some info from it:  I agree with lesson plans being public.  I disagree with the whole parent opt out for a different lesson plan part.  Sorry, but your tax dollars don't pay for a customized curriculum, if you want that you should save your money and send your kids to private school.  Or if you are such a caring parent, here is a thought:  engage with your kid about the curriculum and discuss your pros and cons about it.  That's free!

There's a SCOTUS case out of rural Maine on the docket right now that, if the vastly upgraded court does it right, will clean that right up.

Take half of them away and no one would do the job. So yeah, it’s that simple.

Now no one has a choice unless they have the money for private school while you are forced to fund the public schools too.

They don't have a magic wand to solve every problem with a ruling from the top. But what they do can empower parents to choose the school most suitable for their kids.

I'm really upbeat about the possibility that the court will finally rectifying the situation. With all the controversy around schools these days, it'd be a very timely decision. If you don't like what's being taught in your school, too many cr@ptivists, pull your kids out and find one you like. The time may be near.

This proposed bill makes it look like parents will have the power to now have a personalized curriculum for their child.  That's just not possible.  If people want that then get your own personal teacher and have them teach your child whatever you want.

Thanks.  So this is from a SENATE Bill?  I was thinking it was from some particular school district or state vs federal.

It's a senate bill.  I believe DeSantis is looking at something similar.  I see more problems coming from it than good.

I’m talking about school choice as an option.

Couldn't the same be said now though?  It goes both ways.

I would have liked to of been a teacher, the problem is that the pay is crap. Some countries do pay their teachers as much as other professionals and until the united states does they will push people away from the profession.

Public school needs to be as accessible to all children as we can make it.  If people want a school that's catered to exactly what they want then they an hire a private teacher or something like that.

I don't have all the answers but I do know that I think this bill isn't the right way to go.  All I can do is see how it all turns out.

How did you find this particular tweet, if I may ask? Are you one of her 6k followers?

That's a good question, I'm not sure.  I have no idea who she is.  I think it was retweeted by someone else I follow.  I just saw it while scrolling through my feed, reading about the Bears firing Nagy and Pace.

Teacher salary

Compared to another 4 year degree that makes almost twice as much with more future earnings once you get into management.

Accessible was a poor chose of words.  The curriculum should be something that is for everyone, not just liberal families or conservative families.  You say that it should be a choice but there are not multiple schools for people to choose from everywhere you go.

I submit that school choice is the answer. Each child should be provided an education "credit" to "buy" access to the school of their choice. And hell, you know what, I am even fine giving <ahem> "historically disadvantaged" communities extra money.

Look this is very simple.  The issues in disparity are not race-based, they are not even funding-based....they are cultural.  You can give the uhhhh "disadvantaged" kids three times the money and they will still under perform, because its not about money or skin color, its about values....

Average. And a 54 k average is higher than almost all civil service jobs. No one with 5 years on is making that little. Amd im willing to bet much like most inner City school districts there is great turnover, leading to a younger workforce starting at the lower pay steps. Average is a liar. Edit: average is about 62k a year. Not bad in Texas. Plus they don’t pay into their pension and their health benefits are cheap as hell.

Sugar land is a somewhat wealthy suburb and not the inner city.

Even on the high end it is only up to 72k. You can start out higher than that with other 4 year degrees.

I would have loved to have been a teacher and I have looked into switching, it just isn't possible with how little they make.

Here's the pay schedule for Des Moines, Iowa for reference.

Not bad for Iowa. Now do their benefits. Most people have to fund their own retirement. More people pay for their health benefits. Total package counts. So we can end the whole “underpaid” nonsense.

Is that accurate that most people have to fund their own retirement?

I won't argue with you too much on the teacher pay topic because I've seen over the years that you have a major bias against teachers.
