A Vermont Christian high school forfeited a girls basketball game because the opposing team had a transgender player, the head of school said.

Mid Vermont Christian School in Junction had been scheduled to play Long Trail School in Dorset on Feb. 21, but the game never happened.

Vicky Fogg, the head of Mid Vermont Christian School, said the team decided not to participate "because we believe playing against an opponent with a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players."

Long Trail did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

There has been a heated debate for years over including transgender athletes. Some states, such as Florida, Tennessee, West Virginia and Texas, banned transgender youths from competing on sports teams that aligned with their gender identities. In Vermont, students are allowed to participate in “VPA activities in a manner consistent with their gender identity," according to the Vermont Principals’ Association, the state’s governing body for school sports.

In a letter dated Oct. 5, the association said supporting transgender athletes is "a core part of building an inclusive community for each student to grow and thrive."

Fogg said in her statement that she believes "allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports sets a bad precedent for the future of women’s sports in general." Contacted Wednesday, the school declined to discuss the matter further.

Data shows that participating in sports can help LGBTQ+ youth increase their self-esteem and gives them a sense of belonging while decreasing feelings of "hopelessness and suicidality," according to GLSEN, an organization that fights LGBTQ+ discrimination.

Amanda Rohdenburg, the associate director of Outright Vermont, which advocates for LGBTQ+ youth, said the school's actions show that Vermont "is not immune to anti-trans hate."

"What we’re seeing in Vermont and around the country is a heightened and coordinated effort to stop trans youth from existing and thriving as people," Rohdenburg said in an emailed statement. "Our primary focus is to go where harm is done and to ensure that young people feel safe and seen. We want for the trans youth who is directly harmed and her family to know we are here for them. We also want all queer and trans youth in Vermont to know that we are here."

Agree.   Trouble here is people can write this one off too easily since it's a Christian school.   I am surprised there was only one team they faced to do this.   What we need is a public/non-religion affliated school or group to do this.

Well why are they the first team of the 20 they played all season to be scared?  Is the kid bigger or stronger than everyone else?  I don't know but I would doubt it given the history of the season.

So no, I don't think men should play women's sports.  Trans?  Generally I would say no as well, but if the competition is the same, then I can ignore what's between the legs.

If you were born a male and at some point prior to adulthood you choose to become a female, I have no problem with that. I think you should be treated with dignity and respect and there should be no laws preventing you from doing this. I disagree with a lot of the folks here on this issue.

Generally I agree, however speaking anecdotally, there are some biological males on our mens team that wouldn't start on our womens team, so there is no competitive advantage.

I dont know how you make a rule for this, same way I don't know how you make a rule about a genital check before each game either.

I agree, choose to live and be whatever ever you want away from the athletic arena.

There is a reason that women who think they are men are not playing sports against real men.  They just can`t compete physically.

That is why real men who think they are women dominate female sports. It is just the human body biology.

That's right.   I guarantee more feel the same way, but nobody wants to be first to stick their neck out.  

I wonder if we are starting to see some creeping to that point though - for example, did any girls from those other teams sit out during the year because they didn't want to compete with the trans athletes.   That might force some of the schools to act if they can't field competitive teams because athletes are sitting.

I am generally  in favor of inclusiveness.

 

with an exclusion for competitive sports.

if a female or trans (female to male) wants to play the men’s game, waiver should be required.

 

no male or trans (male to female) should be able to play in women’s competition due to competitive advantage.

I want add something more: it shouldn’t have been left to this team to make the decision to refuse to play. That sucks for those kids, and the team they’re playing. They’re the ones who will have to suffer now because we as a society refused to take a stance on this. 

I blame the radical left. They’re the only ones that I can see who are pushing this idea that trans girls should be allowed to compete. The rest of us, conservatives and liberals alike, don’t like it and don’t want it. (Also, from a liberal standpoint, it gives the bigots a leg to stand on and I hate that.)
