The Real timschochet 6,406 Posted May 2, 2023 22 minutes ago, Hardcore troubadour said: Read some more. Thank you I have. The Republicans say there will be no cuts to the military or the VA, but they’re not specific as to what the cuts WILL be; they will be decided later by budget committees. And that gives an opening to Democrats to suggest that the VA will indeed be cut. The Republicans could simply solve this by stating where they want the cuts right now. But of course they won’t because they’re afraid to actually cut anything. It’s the same old nonsense. They want to show they’re serious about spending cuts but won’t specify except for a few areas to please their base: for instance increase restrictions on food stamps (which won’t add up to a hill of beans) and reduce IRS spending (which will actually increase the debt.)
The Real timschochet 6,406 Posted May 2, 2023 The military is the most obvious place to cut spending because so much of the technology is antiquated; we are spending money on all sorts of expensive hardware we will never need. But of course neither Republicans nor Democrats will ever really look into this as they don’t want to appear anti-military, and there’s too many jobs in too many districts that continue to depend on Boeing, Lockheed and all the rest. It’s very frustrating.

lickin_starfish 1,890 Posted May 2, 2023 My plan to save taxpayers money: Stop paying for food, housing, and education for illegals. Launch them back over the Rio Grande from circus cannons. Enact a 5 year lifetime limit for receiving Welfare. That gives people enough time to either get their rugrats into kindergarten or learn a job skill. After five years, you work or you get fired out of the circus cannon. Stop sending money to Ukraine. Lower every government employee's pay to $55K/year, including Congress. No overtime pay. Eliminate all 3-letter agencies and teach the newly unemployed bureaucrats how to mine for coal and drill for gas.

The Real timschochet 6,406 Posted May 5, 2023 We seem to moving towards disaster here and I’m having my doubts it’s going to be resolved. 2010 was bad enough but one got the sense back then that reasonable minds would prevail. I’m not seeing that this time. There appears to be no deal that both Biden and the House Republicans can agree to accept. And while the usual “kick it down the road” is being offered (in this case, kick it to September/October when the annual budget will also be voted on), several of the most prominent people involved have already publicly stated that they will not accept that solution this time. The problem here, IMO, is that there are some people on both sides who actually want to see the debt ceiling fail: some Republicans who just want to blow everything up, and some Democrats who desire this catastrophe so that they can blame Republicans. These folks don’t care about any of us; they see it all as a big game. Screw them.

nobody 2,557 Posted May 6, 2023 I wouldn't call that a good article. There are virtually no real world examples. I guess there is an attempt to hand wave it by mentioning a couple of platforms, but it doesn't mention what threats they meet and what the replacement would be. Is the idea to replace everything with drones? The military is already doing that. It's a lot more complicated than just saying stop supporting current platforms and build drones. You have to understand the threat laydowns and have a platform that can meet those threats until the newer technology is matured, built up, and there are enough units to replace current capability. dogcows 1,030 Posted May 18, 2023 I think Biden’s making a mistake if he gives the GOP House an inch. They ran the deficit much higher under Trump and yet passed clean debt ceiling bills multiple times. The only time they do this is when there’s a Democrat in the White House. The best way to handle snots when they play this kind of game is just ignore them. Biden shouldn’t even have invited McCarthy to the White House for a discussion, period. There is a budget passed every year. This can all be discussed then.
