When a college only allowed white people for centuries, and then has a “legacy” admission program, that is de facto affirmative action for white people.

Rich white people. Please be accurate. Funny the left can categorize everyone into smaller subsets, and “intersectionality” but when it’s a negative all white people get lumped together. No.

His idiot son went to Yale. Somehow middle class Joe was able to pay for all his kids to go to expensive, private schools.

I wasn’t aware that elite schools’ legacy programs had a financial test associated. Surely children of middle class alumni are eligible for legacy status as well?

lol, cornpop better get educated

colleges still have the freedom to build a diverse student body, they just cant discriminate based on race

they can give out scholarships to whoever they want.  If Harvard wants a average black kid instead of a smart asian, they can pay for it themselves, why dont you line up to be a donor?

oh you wont, youll just whine about it on a message board

Come on man. You know the best schools are full of the rich and powerful.  If you want to go to the second level then sure, there are legacies. Also not much competition for those spots.  If our society is going to be run by the graduates of the top schools, and it is, then it shouldn’t just be rich kids getting the the spots.

Clarence Thomas exemplifies the Republican way of thinking than “I got mine, F y’all”. And sure enough, Clarence Thomas got into an elite school through affirmative action, and ended up on the Supreme Court. But now he’s against it. If he’s REALLY against it, he should give back his degree and step off the court.

With the end of affirmative action, it will get even worse. Almost guaranteed it will just be rich kids now. If the court was going to end race-based affirmative action, they should have ended legacy programs as well. Affirmative action tilted the playing field, while legacy admissions tilted it back even further. Now that affirmative action is gone, it’s going to be extremely slanted towards the rich and well-connected.

I wonder if we can agree on one thing with this court, at least for the last 30 years, it’s that they almost always rule in favor of the wealthy.

Why don’t the colleges just end the legacy programs? Stop acting like they are powerless victims in all of this

I don’t think that. The colleges are the opposite of victims. They should get rid of the legacy programs for sure, but why is it the court feels they can intervene on affirmative action, but cannot intervene on legacy admissions? This decision is 100% helping the wealthy. If anything, these colleges are probably happy about this. Rich kids don’t need scholarships, and they tend to donate afterwards too. The schools probably lost money bringing in kids from disadvantaged backgrounds.

All true. But I am not of the belief that the smartest in our society come from the one pct of the one pct. The GI Bill after WW2 showed that. But times are different  now. Back then a college degree was enough.  Now it has to be from the right place to ascend , with some exceptions.

Meh.  Colleges and schools will figure out a way to get what they want.

Best news I’ve heard in years.  Fock racism, and fock Democrats for propagating it all these years under the guise of “justice”.

The Supreme Court just sent your racist little policy straight to hell, right where it belongs.  Maybe we can finally start realizing MLK’s dream of a colorblind society.

No, in a perfect world, we're all equal.  But it's not a perfect world.  Affirmative actions has opened doors for black people that they never would have had.  White people are doing just fine.

Except the white people that earned it and we’re denied. When you give someone something based on their race you deny someone based on theirs. I wish you would be affected by race based quotas and suffer accordingly.

I read through the majority opinion, Thomas’ concurring opinion, and part of the dissent (so far).

The main disagreement seems to boil down to: the conservatives believe in a colorblind ideal, and believe we must apply the law from that perspective. The liberals point out that racial inequity and discrimination are real and ongoing, and we don’t live in a colorblind utopia, so laws need to be applied to the reality of the situation.

The real reason colleges are using affirmative action is because our K-12 schools are so unequal. I think a better solution than college affirmative action is to fully integrate all K-12 schools. We have way too many schools that are essentially one race because our neighborhoods are so segregated. Sure, nobody wants to do “busing” in 2023, but if we TRULY want EQUALITY (not equity of outcomes but simply equality), then we need to make sure kids are getting equal educations. That is definitely NOT happening in present-day America. We know separate but equal doesn’t work, so let’s actually integrate K-12 schools.

Tardcore back to wishing bad things on people.

Also how do you know I haven't been?  But I'm doing just fine, so I'm not gonna cry about anything that may or may not have happened.
