Gen-Z is taking courses on how to send an email and what to wear in the office

I know, get off of my lawn, but yeesh!  I weep for our future.  :(

Gen-Z is taking courses on how to send an email and what to wear in the office, according to a WSJ report

  • Some companies and colleges are offering new grads training on how to work in person, WSJ reported.

  • The courses can cover everything from office chitchat to work attire and meal-time etiquette.

  • Some experts say Gen-Z is lacking in soft skills due to virtual classes and remote internships.

Recent graduates, who spent most of their college career taking virtual classes and working remote internships, might need to brush up on their soft skills — from how to write an email to elevator chitchat and appropriate work attire.

Some companies and universities have already begun offering training to help Generation-Z employees adapt to the office, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal.

For example, KPMG is offering new hires introductory training that includes how to talk to people in person, with tips on the appropriate level of eye contact and pauses in a conversation, the company's vice chair of talent and culture, Sandy Torchia, told the Journal. Deloitte and PwC also began offering similar trainings earlier this year, the Financial Times reported in May.

Wow, we were simply told not to look at a lady's nice rack while talking to them. Gen Z needs help to know when to pause when talking???

For example , KPMG is offering new hires introductory training  that includes how to talk to people  in person, with tips on the appropriate level of eye contact and pauses in a conversation,

I don't get it. Companies only send emails while in office?

And dress codes aren't provided by companies when someone gets a job?

And emails are something you learn on the job.

At my job in the first few years we often times would ask each other to read an email before sending depending on the importance and the audience. Just to get a second set of eyes on it.

The email thing confused me as well, but maybe it is because the youngin's are used to texting vs. email, which is its own different set of customs.  :dunno:

Yeah. Gotta say, they should be telling them to get off their phones and social media and stop chatting constantly on Teams (or whatever IM they use) and focus on work.

This is exactly the reason.  They are using ackronyms and abbreviations the boomers don't understand.

Dress code is out the window.  Federal government is trying to come up with a gender neutral dress code and who would have guessed.... that doesn't work.

I learned my 18 year old graduate never learned how to address an envelope. I am astonished.

Among other things as well...  Like writing a check, cursive, simple math like calculating tax or tip, stuff like that...

I heard a discussion on this this morning.  Some things, like writing a check, are kinda like steering a plow.  Lots of our ancestors did it, but are we worse off for not doing it? Probably not.  It's just a skill that has largely become unnecessary.

Simple math though, that gets a little more complicated.  Now we are venturing into developing basic skills which not only exercise the brain but are the foundation for a host of other skills.  I don't think younger kids are better off for needing a device to calculate math, even if it is easier and more productive in the short term.

This is needed by more than just gen z, many people need a class on emails. People need taught how to use bcc and most importantly when to include someone in cc.

There should be a whole class in how to communicate to offshore folks through email. I learned the hard way over the years.

Rule 1:. Do not use reply all to emails sent to the entire company.

One time about 18 years ago, a mass email was sent out and went out to the whole of my company (nearly a million employees around the world)  and the reply all was used by a bunch of people after that. Then others started chiming in and replied to all saying "don't reply to all!!". That kept going on for hours and some employees from like Germany and UK started joking about having cars for sale and all this other crap. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them got canned as they were all new analysts for the most part. But the emails kept coming for hours and I wonder how much time was lost in man hours just because of that. We were definitely laughing about it in my office.

The beginning of the email was someone asking a help desk type question but the rookie included all the world mass email groups. They really wanted an answer I guess.

comments on  the video:

1.  If these rules were followed today, imagine how much better society would be [  heart  ]

2. I'd love to see a workplace that completely follows all these office etiquette rules..it's quite rare today.

3. “I believe your coat is in the other office” polite way of saying get the heck out of my office.

My favorite is every few years there will be an email sent out incorrectly. Someone will respond "Please take me off this distribution list". Then a second person responds to also take them off. Then people start replying "Please stop replying all".

I have seen this go on for over 100+ emails and it cracks me up every time.

I regularly email ~5-10k users, what i do is email myself and put everyone else in BCC. This prevents that problem from ever occurring.

This is the second time you mentioned your employer has almost a million employees.  Using today's numbers, that would mean you work for Accenture.  18 years ago, Accenture did not have close to a million employees.

Something is fishy here.

there was one about 18 years ago involving a government accidental mass email out of the Department of Homeland Security. seafoam also said "was sent out" but didnt say it came from his company.
