In America, an estimated 16,425 people were murdered in 2019. This was a 0.3% increase from the 2018 estimate.

Here are murder rates in 65 major U.S. cities (cities with greater than 100,000 residents) for 2019. These rates are calculated using the latest statistics available โ€” theย FBI's 2019 Crime in the United States data, as well as data culled directly from city police officials and the U.S. Census Bureau.

How about a thread dedicated to documenting incidents of police violence?

You are missing the point.ย  You can get endless reporting on police violence from CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, BBC, the New York Times, The LA Times, The Washingotn Post, and on and on and on and on.ย ย  Absolutely NOBODY needs to come HERE to get reporting on this topic.ย  The problem with the MSM is they commit lies of omission and do not report or underreport on issues that might be critical of the left, and some of that omitted news winds up here.

If you are envision an internet forum dedicated to leftist issues, itll get extremely low views compared to one that reports on the stuff the MSM omits or underreports.ย  You are not fighting for equal time by posting this thread.ย

Fun Fact (or not so fun in my case). I reported no one in the last 2 years of the PSF (per a warning by Joe that I would suspended if I did so).

That's the most pathetic thing I've ever read here.ย  And, since Mike has not similarly warned you, it's reasonable for anyone here to assume that you're back to your serial reporting ways.ย

A black man calledย the police to report a robbery. They showed up and tased him instead of the criminal, then tossed him in the back of the police car. This was despite a neighbor coming by and telling the police they had the wrong guy. Only after 20 minutes did they pull his ID and realize it matched the address on the house.ย Ironically, the man had beenย working on a documentary about police violence.

https://news.yahoo.com/making-documentary-police-brutality-then-110018567.html

Quote

Officers arrived at Smith's apartment around 1:30 a.m. and approached from his street-facing back door, which was ajar, according to the lawsuit. They had what looked like guns pointed at Smith, who was still holding the camping knife and standing above the burglary suspect. When officers told him to put down the knife, he did, Smith said.

"I dropped it," he said. "I complied to what the officers are telling me to do."

While the officers were shouting commands at Smith, frightened neighbors tried to explain.

Tiffany Wysinger, who lives in the apartment above Smith's, said she was roused from sleep by the commotion. When she realized where the noise was coming from, she ran downstairs.

"Police were there. I was screaming at the top of my lungs," she said. "I see them with something drawn, and I scream at the top of my lungs, 'He's the resident!' "

Smith said he was about 10 feet away from the officers, who did not immediately enter his apartment.

"I live here. I called 911," Smith repeatedly told police, who were commanding him to get on the ground, according to the lawsuit.

Wysinger said she continued to scream that they were targeting the homeowner, not the burglar, who was still lying on the ground.

"Then I hear a pop, and I start crying profusely thinking they killed Damien," she said.

Dogcows - the only way this thread might be constructive is if there is more detail and follow up to these cases.ย  ย I have read way too many examples of details coming out later that can and should change perceptions of many of these types of incidents.ย ย

IMO most of these examples fall in line with what my opinion was in the other thread.ย  We need to change up our policing somehow - step one is way fewer pullover interactions for things that can be a mailed ticket/fine.ย ย

California has the "mailed ticket" in some areas, not sure how well it works or not. But I imagine collecting on a mailed ticket might be more difficult, "I didn't get it in the mail" and that type of stuff.ย

CA is also trying to outlaw the use of K9s - because apparently the dogs are racist.ย

IMO, the most consistent thing I see with these incidents is the lack of accountability for officers. The defenders of the police love to say โ€œitโ€™s just a few bad apples.โ€ But then they refuse to remove the bad apples, and slowly watch the entire bushel get spoiled.

It takes a lawsuit, or a viral video, or somebody high profile dying, etc... before an officer is even considered to be culpable. And in many cases, they will pay out millions of taxpayer dollars in lawsuit settlementsย before getting rid of one bad cop.

Iโ€™m all for union protections of workers. But it really goes too far with police. And then even if they DO get fired for violence, they often get rehired in the same town, or hired in another jurisdiction that either didnโ€™t do a background check, or simply didnโ€™t care about their violent history. Even Fox News did a piece on how widespread this is:

I feel like the system works pretty well.

Cops have an impossible and dangerous job. They get a lot of leeway when it comes to use of force because theyโ€™re making split second decisions in extreme circumstances. They make mistakes like everyone else. When theyโ€™re deliberately abusive or misuse the publicโ€™s trust they should be held accountable.ย

Not really sure what cataloguing the bad apples accomplishes other than riling up the many Geeks who cheer on police brutality.ย

I'm sure there is a bit of that.ย  ย But I am coming at it from the side of the police and their safety and I think it's worth it.ย  ย

What's the reasoning behind the outlaw of K9s?ย

I get what you are saying, but we default to the side of the cops for good reason.ย  ย  The vast majority are good and how can we trust our system if we don't believe that as well?ย ย

That said, in no way shape or form should cops be getting rehired when there is a history of violence vs. citizens in cases like this.ย ย

I disagree, because of the interactions and training.ย  ย I think it's a deadly combination that has eroded at the trust in the system and safety off all involved.ย ย

Like people agreed in the other thread - we are largely using things like broken taillights, which while are a safety hazard aren't 100% the reason for the stop - it's to look for more.ย  So we have fostered a system where the citizens know they are largely being pulled over for this stuff, and for their safety cops have to react and treat each encounter like the person is hiding something.ย  Tensions are already high before they start talking to each other.ย  ย It was shown to be effective a small % of the time, but we use that way of policing most of the time.ย  IMO it's got to change.ย ย

Seems like just yesterday liberals were defunding the police because they are so awful, then pretending it was actually conservatives when their stupidity resulted in bad outcomes.ย  Then they defended law enforcement again when conservatives went after the FBI they were suddenly fas again....

Hard to keep up with "wrong and right" when its so maleable.ย

Sometimes the bad apples get rid of themselves.

https://portside.org/2023-07-05/half-police-force-quit-crime-dropped

Quote

โ€œWhen I started, Black folks Iโ€™d speak to in Minneapolis seemed surprised that Iโ€™d been hired,โ€ Chief Green said when I spoke with him recently. โ€œThey told me they and most people they knew avoided driving through Golden Valley.โ€

Members of the overwhelmingly white police force responded to both hires by quitting โ€”ย in droves.

An outside investigationย later revealed that some officers had run an opposition campaign against Chief Green. One of those officers recorded herself making a series of racist comments during a call with city officials, then sent the recording to other police officers. She was fired โ€”ย prompting yet another wave of resignations.

The typical Golden Valley police officer makes a six-figure salary with good benefits. The city has almost no violent crime. Itโ€™s a good gig. Yet in just two years, more than half the department quit.

โ€œI havenโ€™t been on the job long enough to make any significant changes,โ€ Chief Green said. โ€œYet weโ€™re losing officers left and right. Itโ€™s hard not to think that they just donโ€™t want to work under a Black supervisor.โ€

The interesting thing is that according to Chief Green, despite the reduction in staff, crime โ€”ย already low โ€” has gone down in Golden Valley. The town plans to staff the department back up,ย just not right away. โ€œIโ€™ve heard that the police union is cautioning officers from coming to work here,โ€ Mr. Harris said. โ€œBut thatโ€™s OK. We want to take the time to hire officers who share our vision and are excited to work toward our goals.โ€

Thatโ€™s funny. Funny because Chief Green was talking about the staffing shortages at his introductory press conference after his swearing in last year.ย Duped by left wing propaganda once again. ย
