Apparently they’re going to start letting window seat passengers board first.  People are upset about this.

Ive always thought airlines should call everyone without a carry-on bag first.

My number one complaint about flying is how awful passengers are.  Everyone turns into a focking baby when they fly.

This boarding process makes sense.  I mainly fly united, have some flights coming up, can't wait to see people raging over not getting seated first.

Makes sense.  People with status will still board first, so really the only complaint seems to be losing overhead space, but they’re saying they’ll have bigger bins that will fit all bags.

It's all about the carry on.  Many flights space fills up and you gotta check your bag.  So you wanna be on early to get a space for your bag.

If I'm going on a day or 1 night trip, I'll just pack a backpack I can put under the seat and board last.

I do this sometimes, but I also prefer window seats and then people sometimes get grumpy if they have to get up, or occasionally will have someone sitting in my seat (I still ask them to move of course  but would rather just get there first).

LOL if someone doesn’t think it’s an issue. Most of the airlines have made the bins bigger recently so it’s much less of an issue than it used to be, but certainly still is.  But mostly just for people that have the last couple boarding groups.

For leisure travel, much less of an issue, since most people will check anyway.  Business travel, no one checks, everyone carries on, and there is never enough space.  That's why you see people lining up to board 30 mins early.

The new 777s, I think there have been a few flights where they got everything on, but the older planes, they start asking people to check before they even start boarding. Group 3 or later you're in trouble.

I fly American and am usually group 6 of 9 I think. Haven’t had any issues but I know they have sometimes run out later.  The other thing that can happen too is people needing to put their carryon much further back than their seat which could cost about 10-15 minutes if you wait til everyone gets off first.

I used to travel, a lot.   And with status, I didn't have to pay to check a bag. And if I was traveling for work, I didn't have to pay anyway.  I got sick of the mad rush of people trying to get on to stow their carry ons.  So I started checking everything.  And it was awesome.   Yeah a little wait to get your bag from bag claim but BFD.  I would sit and enjoy my beer outside the gate and watch everyone gather by it.  When the madness was clear, I'd saunter on, whenever I felt like it, and find my seat.  Definitely the way to go.  Never had a lost bag, ever.

Minus the beer, this is my approach.  Get on last carrying a backpack or messenger bag.

Hard to police.   Someone headed to the back will see their bins are full and start filling up bins up the aisle.  Happens all the time.  The mad rush to get your carryon loaded is dumb and happens far too much

Exactly. I've literally been on 1500+ flights in my life and all I took on to the flights was a backpack with my laptop and whatever in it. Always fit under the seat if no overhead space was available. Loved just having a beer or two before the flights and just relaxing while dismissing the crazies.

Just asking. As someone who also flies a lot I find that pretty wild. I never check a bag unless absolutely have to.

I do pack pretty "efficiently" and often don't need a second bag. I've seen people freak out over overhead storage though. Trying to move other people's bags around so they can get their bag in where they want it. It's never a pretty scene.

With status you get on early though. It is funny the people who are freaking about getting on first that you see,  don’t need to be the first dude on or anything just need to be in the first third or so which is easy enough to do when you have priority.

There are certain airports where you can wait forever to get a bag and after long flight that kills me.

Not lugging a back around the airport is nice, I do like that part on longer trips where I couldn’t do carry on.

Yeah. That I do just try and ignore. Headphones on as soon as I sit and try to remain zen as possible.

It would be nice if boarding made sense logistics wise instead of who is in what tier of an airlines loyalty program or whatever. 
 

even boarding back to front would seemingly be much better than getting to your seat and continuing to have people walk past you, banging you with their bags, etc. Added bonus for those near the front is they don’t have to sit and wait for the whole plane to board. If you paid more to pick your seats in advance, pick up front.

also you get one carryon and one personal item which can be a pretty decent sized backpack for example. It baffles me how as soon as the plane has taken off, everyone makes a mad dash to their carryon bags. Opening the overhead compartments to get a bunch of shiit out. Dropping stuff on people, etc. keep the shiit you need in your personal item, dumbasss

Disabilities, old people, first class, priority, then back to front.

If your bag doesn’t make it gate check. Too bad.

Weird thing is 15 years ago, this was never an issue.  Planes were less full in general, and I guess people just didn't mind checking bags. 

I for one am not a big fan of checking bags.  I've always not liked it.  If people think the way they load planes is dumb, just watch how people retrieve bags from carousels.  

The thing moves like 6 inches a second, and everyone acts like if they aren't standing there ready 10 minutes before the bags come they'll somehow miss it.  Then everyone is jockeying for position right next to the chute like it matters if it takes an extra 2 minutes for the bag to come around.

If everyone would just hang back, there would be more space for everyone, and then you can see the thing coming for a good 60 seconds.  Just walk up and get it when it gets close.

This is me as well. Backpack and purse, both fit under the seat in front of me. I prefer the middle or the aisle. 

I always check a bag, only didn't check one time when it was literally an overnight trip and I didn't need much and that bag even fit under my seat. 

At any rate, I don't usually have issues checking in bags, or getting them from claim areas. 

Which brings up another peeve; standing RIGHT AT the baggage claim carousel and blocking everyone behind you. Especially if you have small kids. Back the fock up, wrangle your children, and wait for your bag a little back from the carousel. We are all waiting there, FFS.

1500 flights is obviously BS.  If you flew that much, you'd have status and it wouldn't matter what you did on a flight.

I personally don't care if my bag gets checked at the gate or not as i'm not one of the dbags who needs to get stuff from their carryon 3-4 times during the flight. What I need is in my personal item under the seat in front of me. I don't volunteer to check my bag but If I board and they are already to the point of checking them, it's all good.

 

as for disabilities, old people, first class etc, Is that an actual boarding order that is used currently? or are you saying that's how it should be? Genuinely asking asI don't pay attention to it and am usually in group 3 or 4 because I try to fly for as cheap as possible and spend more at my destination. Just get me there is my motto.

At the end of the day it really doesnt matter to me when I board a plane but I definitely think it could be a more streamlined process and my guess is that loyalty/reward programs are getting in the way of an overall better experience... even for those members.
