Cam shaft seal, tie rod thing...

I have an old 2007 Honda Civic that I'm getting the power steering fluid replaced and the service people are recommending me getting cam shaft seal and something about a tie rod. What is that and is it necessary to fixed? They said something about transmission fluid leaking...

Make sure you ask them to also check the blinker fluid; all goes to hell when that shiiite gets low.

Apparently, you guys don't know what a tie rod is either!

Have you seen higher oil pressure? If the cam shaft seal does need service then I would pay for that to be done, if it’s leaking oil that can effect many things.   

Tie Rods do they need adjusting or replacement, have both the inner and outer checked, they can fail just from normal wear, if they need replacement and you don’t, you will just lose the ability to steal nothing big.

Cam shafts though deal with your intake and exhaust valves. Replacing the seal is cheap in parts but depending on the car and the mechanics, there is a wide range for labor costs.

Transmission leakage also can start to take place because of wear.  Older vehicles need love.

Wit a car that old, you really have to weigh cost of repairs vs worth.  The cam seal and leaky tranny “could” be no big deal and not worth fixing.  Hondas of that vintage are super easy to keep an eye on tranny fluid level, and obviously the oil is easy too.  If you don’t see any wet spots in places you normally park, I wouldn’t worry with those and just keep an eye on the fluids.  The tie rod is prob something you need fixing.  As others said, it’s how the steering rack connects to the steering knuckle, and it can affect drivability.  Also, it can affect uneven tire wear.  If it’s an outer tie rod, those are super easy and you could prob find a mobile mechanic to do it for cheap at your house.  You need to get an alignment afterwards.  You can get both outer tie rods for less than $100.  Labor should prob be no more than 1.5 to 2 hour

What did you go in for originally and where was it?  Dealer?  Small Indy shop?  Jiffy lube?

My car was starting to make a high pitch sound that I ignored for a while whenever I pushed on the gas. Then the sound got louder and louder. They said I need to replace my power steering fluid and that I have a bubble or something like that. They need to do a flush and/or change tubing or hoses. They said to do all of that with parts and labor = $1300. Then they said I should do the cam shaft tie rod things which would bring my total to $2100. I didn't want to pay all of that if it could wait. Besides, I may just buy a new car soon. I feel like I'm sinking my money into a pit. The car has lasted a really long time, but I put $3000 into it in 2023.

I know shops need to make money, but damn. Im pretty sure the 07s have the PS pump right on top and are a pretty easy replacement.  $1300 is a lot. The pump and lines are $200 on the high end and even if someone took forever and hit you for 4 hours at $120 you’re still under $700, and that’s replacing everything but the rack.

Well...it's the Honda car dealership. I haven't found a good regular car shop. Actually, thanks for letting me know. I researched and found a good shop. I'll take it there for repairs next time. I've been too afraid to take it anywhere but the dealership. If you think I'm getting doubly over charged, then I'll take it elsewhere.

That changes things.  They’re gonna use genuine Honda parts, which is great for dependability.  But, you’re never gonna realize that investment pay off on a 16 year old car.  I’m seeing upwards of $450 for a genuine Honda PS pump.   But they didn’t even change that, did they?  I would be curious to see an itemized invoice.  It should be broken down with parts and labor divided.  Anyway, I like a reputable Indy shop over dealers.  They’re gonna give you dependable aftermarket parts and prob lower on labor.  I see alot of good recommendations for auto shops on my local Neighborhood app.  I would try there also.

Or as simple as brakes and rotors.
