It seems to have steadily increased since 2000.  It seems like it has been increasing more markedly since 2020, but that might just be my perception or reflect a change in media coverage.  The past year concerns me less than the totality of the last 25-ish and I think that’s a better conversation.

How do you feel about the source used (but not cited) by the OP?

Reminder that the metric he cited was “violent crime excluding simple assault”  from the National Crime Victimization survey.  That number increased from 5.6 per 1000 people 12 years and older in 2021, to 9.8 in 2022.   If you’re interested in the year 2000, 2022 is a decrease from that which was 12.4.

Simple assault does seem to have a big impact on the overall crime victimization numbers.  While the metric excluding simple assault is still a bit higher, total violent victimization is about equal to the prior high in 2018.  And overall there had been a pretty steady decline from 1993 when the survey started until about 2010.   Since then it has been mostly flat with some small ups and downs. This link lets you filter by year and goes back to 1993 - https://ncvs.bjs.ojp.gov/year-to-year-comparison/crimeType#

I have no time to rabbit hole in data banks, so I just won’t comment on increase/decrease/reporting/gathering.

But if the gist of this thread is an “it’s Biden’s fault/it’s not Biden’s fault” debate, then I’m comfortable saying I doubt any increase can be directly attributed to Biden.

I watched that video. It’s truly disturbing. It’s like something you would expect to see out of Haiti or Somalia, not St. Louis USA. You have to self segregate from them when they have the numbers. It’s that simple.
