That tells your DHCP server (router) to change your network (home) IP address on that specific device.

All the devices in your home have their own IP address on the home network, usually 192.168.1.X and assigned consecutively.  The router will assign them as you turn on and off your devices.  Unless you set your router to static and assign an IP to each device so they get the same IP each time.  Doing that assigns the same IP to the MAC address which is specific to each device.

All that is helpful when doing home networking, but, it's completely different than the IP your modem shows the world.  That's assigned by your internet service provider.  Unless you use a VPN. The VPN doesn't change the IP assigned to your modem either, rather, it runs your internet traffic through a network of computers essentially creating a tunnel that can show the world a different IP.  And you can make the IP appear that it comes from anywhere.  That's helpful for geolocating for internet subscriptions for example.  Most people use a VPN for the security it provides though.  You're traffic is hidden and harder to get to.

VPN I am more familiar with. 

Just wasn't sure if the old IP release / renew commands would at least change you devices IP address so that someone couldn't say "oh it's definitely a gutterboy alias!". But yes, I suppose mike would see the modem IP.

Also, depending upon who your IP is, your PUBLIC IP may or may not change.  For example, my IP hasn't changed in like 2 or 3 years, but i have a few buddies whose public IP changes a couple times a year.

Gutter, rusty must be using a VPN to get past the Invision software as no one knows when they're public IP will actually change (if it does).

Nope.  All the release/renew does is reset your internal IP of your device on  your home network as Horseman nentioned above.  You can't reset your public IP given to you by you're internet provider.

I use Remote Desktop to access my home server.  That way I don't need the "cloud" and nobody else has my data.  It's pretty easy.

1 - Use MS Storage Spaces to create mirrored array.

2 - Tell the router to assign a static IP to the server.

3 - Assign the router port that Remote Desktop uses (3389) to that IP.

4 - Remote Desktop to your public IP.

Just make sure you use a strong password.  The reason I typed all that out is because the only time it doesn't work is when that once every 2 year or so for some strange reason they decide to change your public IP on you.

For that to happen you 'd have to believe that the pollsters, many of whom are controlled by the media an universities selling a narrative, not only corrected what they got wrong in both 2016 and 2020, but completely overcorrected the other direction.  The direction opposite of the narrative they are selling (don't forget they had to get behind a brand new highly unlikeable      candidate).  I don't see that.  Take 538 for example.  They were highly regarded when Silver was in charge.  Now it's painfully obvious they don't want to report Trump is winning.  They were the last to correct his direction each step of the way.  No.  No way they overcorrected.  You just might be without panties in a Trump blowout.
