Pearl Jam

Recommended Posts

I like Eddie Vedder but I just never was a big Pearl Jam guy. I mean they’re fine, just nowhere near one of my favorites.

Now I did love Nirvana’s Nevermind. One of my all time faves. Wasn’t a fan of In Utero though.

Anyway, can somebody convince me I’ve been missing something all these years with Pearl Jam? :dunno:

I don't think you have missed anything with Pearl Jam...  I never understood the love for them either...

Eddie Vedder lyrically was harder to understand than Bob Dylan

Good idea for a spermoff.

Loved 10 and Vs but then it was all downhill.  Can't believe they're still putting out music.  Anytime I tried listening to the Pearl Jam channel on Sirius XM I couldn't last more than 30 seconds.

You're not missing anything. Their best days IMO were 2006 - 2012 ish.

It all sounds the same anymore

You’ve nailed it.  Ten is an enduring classic and Vs was quite good.  But then they lost their edge as life became comfortable.  Vedder’s best songwriting happened before he had the benefit of counseling and therapy.

Ten would be a masterpiece if not for Jeremy.

C'mon, Vitalogy was a great album.

Wow, I’ve never heard that take.  I certainly know people who like that period for them, but no one who considers it their peak.

I think the CW is 1991-1995, but it takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round.

Sorry, let me clarify. That was their peak as a Live band IMO. Their last good studio album was Vitalogy in my opinion. That was a great album.

I'm not going to try to convince you of anything one way or the other.

even flow is one of my favorite songs of all time

I liked them a bit, but cannot listen to them for too long.

one of my favorite covers though:

Maybe worse, especially as he's gotten older. He loves lecturing the audience.

That’s what I’m saying.

Then when you do understand the lyrics, they don’t actually make much sense or it’s some really myopic specific sh1t.

They could jam alright but that’s about it as far as I’m concerned

I've always been a fan.  Started with hearing Jeremey on the radio and then listening to my brother's Ten CD.  In high school a bunch of us starting really getting into them and we listened to a lot of PJ.  A big group of us went to one of their concerts in college and it was awesome.  I'm still a fan.  Ten and Yield are my favorites.

They aren't the best songwriters.

I get that.  I'm typically more of a music guy than a lyrics guy, and the music of 10 just blew me away.  I wasn't in on the early grunge scene (in 1991 I was 24, getting paid and getting laid and enjoying life, nothing to get angsty about.  :D ) but 10 songs kept coming up in my gym and I was like "dang, this stuff rocks$#@!"

Subsequent albums didn't do much for me, just a song here or there.

Saw them in 1993 at Elliot Hall on the campus of Purdue University for $10.  Played 3 hours and it was fantastic.  I was 19 at the time.  Ten resonated with me because of my very rocky childhood and homelife and things I had in common with Vedder Re: fathers.  I now know those aren’t uncommon issues but, at the time, I didn’t personally know anyone who had that thing in common with me.

Nice talking with you.

Never a big Pearl Jam fan, but he’s such a good dude. He came and played at our Cubs fantasy camp a few years back. I even got him out on a play at shortstop. But he took every picture, sign pictures for fans that came by, even brought his guitar and gave us a private show, helped raise a lot of money for a dog place down in Mesa.

But yeah, the music not a huge fan of

I loved Ten. Porch and Oceans are my favorites. Yellow Ledbetter later on.

Likewise. I've seen them a few times and the first time (2000) was amazing. I seen them a few years later and they were dog crap. I don't know if Vedder was trashed or acting but he was stumbling all over the stage, messing up lyrics, etc.

The crowd was booming and doing E-A-G-L-E-S chants the entire show.

I've seen them again thereafter and they were good.

Not me.

I've never been a fan of them or Eddie Vedder. Not that he's not talented or anything, just never really got into them.

I did like Nirvana's Nevermind, but in HS I found I liked Alice in Chains, STP more in terms of the grunge bands.

Have seen them live a handful of times. Just saw them this year and are still great performers and sound very good. A helluva run. Big respect for any rock band of that level that can keep it going at a high level for that long.

Eddie Vedder is hard to understand tho 😂

I wouldn't call them performers. They barely move and the show is identical every time.

They are older so Eddie Vedder wasn’t climbing the rafters but they were doing their thing. Mike McCready was still shredding on guitar. I was very impressed TBH.

The identical show comment I think is just incorrect. The set lists for the shows I saw this year were totally different outside of the new album songs they played and a couple of overlaps.

Didn’t really have much of an appreciation for Vedder until I saw Into the Wild.

Agree, their setlists are always different and I appreciate that. It's more that the band is always the same. I've seen enough PJ to know I'm not missing anything. If that makes sense.

I liked what I heard on the radio I the early 90s, but never really got into them until the late 90s with Yield, right thru Lightning Bolt. So, I guess I was a big fan 1998ish to 2103ish, and I still like their songs from that timeframe. I've always like Eddie's voice, too. I saw them once, in 2010 at TD Garden in Boston. They put on a good, energetic show, but the acoustics were terrible.

I saw them at Tipitinas after Ten  was released . Probably in 91.Good show. Vedder is a monkey. He climbed to the second floor balcony railing and went all the way around and dropped into the crowd

Sort of I guess. I mean they have their sound. This is one of the only bands I had as a college kid that is still going and performing at a high level so I get serious nostalgia when I listen to them. Then seeing them knock out a song live with 20 or 40K people is an experience.

I will continue to see them as long as they keep going, it’s a bonus that I felt like they are still really great.
