My chick has the social D tattoo on the back of her arm, got it way back when they were cool( I think all tats are dumb). I got her tickets to see them a couple months ago, she loved it.

I wouldn't call them Grunge exactly but The Pumpkins are by far the best of that era. Great songwriting, complicated arrangement, etc.

Siamese Dream is an all timer.

Good thread, I like most of the bands listed.

Top 5 at the time:  Bush, Soundgarden, STP, Candlebox, Pearl Jam (10 mostly)

Since then, I probably play more from that era:  Foo, Alice, Rage Against the Machine

Bush does not belong on this list. That's pretty-boy grunge.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins.  All bands I loved listening to when young and still do today.

Jeez, Bush and STP weren’t even legit.  They were corporate hack-shills.  Fakes.

PJ, AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins (although they weren’t really my thing).

If you consider Radiohead grunge, they have a very, very strong argument for #2 overall.

In fact, it’d be hard to argue against them as #1 if you have them in that genre.  Their first 3 releases were all exceptional and the 2nd and 3rd were better than the previous one.  That’s so rare.

I also just want to mention Dinosaur Jr.

A really fun thing to do is listen to covers of Pumpkins songs on Spotify.  It highlights two things amazingly:  how great the songs are and how terrible Billy Corgan’s vocals are.

ETA:  there is a playlist called PUMPKINHEADS.  Give it a try.

Alice In Chains not my favorite but their best songs are pretty great and Layne Staley had crazy pipes.

Nirvana, PJ, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, and Dinosaur Jr.

Honoable mention to STP. Core and Purple are great.

You could say the Pumpkins and Dino Jr were not quite grunge, but they were close. Dino Jr early work lead to it, and their early 90s albums, like Green Mind, Where You Been, and Without a Sound leaned into it quite a bit. Going to see them open for Weezer and the Flaming Lips soon. It will be my 7th or 8th time seeing them. Pumpkins was more about Gish.

Soundgarden is good, but I just never got that into them. Rusty Cage is amazing.

Bush stinks.

I liked Soundgarden. Saw them once at Lolopoloza with Pearl Jam and RHCP. My favorite song is Jesus Christ Pose. Also, what they did with Pearl Jam in the super band, Temple of The Dog, was amazing. I was fortunate enough to see them play In Houston. SG opened and PJ next. Then they all got together and played Temple songs. Amazing show.

Also, do you know what the song Black Hole Sun is about?

That bubble gum shitt is better than this soulless repetitive droning.  Grunge was the end of rock as the dominant genre. And I hate it for that. Mr. Backstreet boyeeeee.
