We used to be a fantasy football board.

More action on the mange board than the geek club. We were such losers we even had mock drafts every single freaking day. Even football flame wars. (Alot like us hard working, tax paying, right wing Americans. Versus the half dozen, left wing (with aliases, probably 10 total) American hating nut jobs. That we do today.) Just football style.

This home to us freaks over the 30 year's has completely flipped 180 style. Any thoughts as to why that is?

Has fantasy football died a little?

Have we just grown old together, and now talk politics. Yell at the birds to get off our lawn.

Mike still has his hamster at gun point, running on that wheel to keep this place going. But any thoughts as to why we've changed so much?

I don't play FF any more but I have no reason to believe it's not as big as it has ever been.

The geek board is different than the mange bored. Millennials and GenZ don't use message boards like we do. So I can see those boards dying out before the geek bored ever does.

I started losing interest in the main bored when the regulars stopped posting and it became the axelf's and weepaws of the world.

I held off posting at the geek club for quite some time

I dont think FF has died off very much. It probably saw it's peak... but back when I started posting and reading the main, there were less websites dedicated to FF, rankings/news/opinions etc. Less FF shows too. There seemed to be more value in bouncing FF ideas around with likeminded hardcore football fans. Now, people who are into FF just go with the same ADP's that everyone else is looking at.

Back then it was easier to wipe the floor with your league if you were a dedicated FF nut. Winning leagues outright is a bit harder now. You can be someone who doesn't pay attention to much, print out your FantasyPros cheat sheet the night before your draft and have a decent chance to do well. Consistency still shows who the most savvy are.

I think the rise of DFS has put a damper on traditional leagues. I don't want to be a "this generation" guy, but the evidence is that attention spans are shorter now, and 5 months is a long time to keep up with a league, especially if you're not doing well.

yeah the politics on this site blows.  That's what I deduced from your post.

you also see it in the migration away from static positions and the adoption of best ball leagues

I've been in at least one league every year since 1989.

I'm in two now, one of them the Geek Club league, which I really enjoy.

The other is with a bunch of salty bikers, one of whom is a client. That league is a lot of fun as well.

I don't get the whining over there being left-leaning posters here. Having board balance is a healthy thing. This was the way it was in the 2000s.

Leading up to the 2020 election, this forum had swung way far right. Too many here take themselves way too damned seriously.

I’m not sure if FF has died a little, but it used to be the easiest way to “gamble” on the NFL and now there are of course many more ways to do that.   But it seems that many that used to post on the main board turned into or already were hardcore righties some of which lost some interest in the NFL because of woke and people kneeling

Its popularity may have peaked, but Twitter didn't really exist (or was not that popular) in the aughts and I have found it a better source of FF information and discussion that the traditional FF message boards.

I stopped using the Mange Board (I coined that name, by the way.) early in the aughts. Too much conflicting information.

I get the free Footballguys newsletter and check a variety of sites, including this one, to make draft, lineup and waiver-wire decisions.

My favorite is Fantasy Points Allowed. I won't bench a stud, but sometimes it's pretty clear whom to start based on those points-allowed stats broken down by position.

The “consensus rankings” were probably the most helpful tool the main board provided IMO

You have memories of a time and place that never existed. I have been here for 24 years now and nothing has changed. It is still the same way today as it used to be. Politics drives this place crazy. Left, right, Center. Does not matter at all. Someone is going to jump you for your views.

In the early days fantasy football was some indication of a person's personal knowledge about the game.  Well informed players won.  Then data crunching services came on board.  Now the uninformed could feel informed.  We ended up playing against computers and idiots who all think they are knowlegeable while basically representing the same algorithms, the same pay services.  Where is the fun in that?

Free FF leagues killed the interested to gain a strong hold over ones opponents imo.

The big board is for helping with in-site to help others , and self, to build winning ff teams,  today more people play ff, but it’s mostly handshake leagues.

Those free leagues don’t cut it for me.

Yeah....this place used to be the bees knees.   Awesome funny stories(throwing a handful of pennies at a brother for instance)

Your Mom jokes..

Moon references.

You have 2 cows...

This was THE Place to come to if there was say, a celebrity nude scandal.  You could always come here and find a link to those said nudes.

We had geek meets.  Some drafts among the locals.   Was a cool place.   I honestly don't remember if politics were huge then, I wanna say no they weren't.   But now yeah it's pretty much all you get.

Now we have guys posting just about every article on Fox News.  Like they are breaking the news to us and we haven't all seen it.  Then the endless twitter posts.  Ugh

We also didn't have posters as annoying as Peefoam and Maxipad Overkill, the former of whom appears to be suspended or banned again, which is great.

Great thread!

I believe it has. At least one other person already mentioned DFS having an affect. I suppose it's kind of the same thing, but the fact that sports gambling is legal in around 40 states also has an affect. No data to prove it, but the whole national anthem kneeling thing probably didn't help either. After coworkers bugged me for 2 years, I finally joined a 10 team Yahoo league in 2005. Won't go into the details, but I totally focked up the draft. I'm lucky they didn't take me out behind the shed and kick my arse.

But I learned quickly, & did well enough to finish 3rd. I was hooked. About 3 years later I started a rival 10 team work league. The original league died about 8 years ago.

3 years ago, my league was down to only 6 teams. Because of this, I decided to make it insanely high scoring by featuring.....

(QB) 2
(WR) 4
(RB) 4
(TE) 1
(W/T) 1
(W/R) 1
(W/R/T) 1
Kicker (K)
Defense

With the scoring system I had set up, an average score was/is 8000 pts per week. A good week for a QB would be around 1200 points, 2000 a great week.

Yeah, I know, no skill league, but it's a helluva lotta fun. This year I think they'll only be 3 teams that actually compete/manage, so I'll probably just let it die.

I'll miss fantasy football, but life will go on.

His disappearance was right about the same time that The Fuhner posted that thread about us dialing it down over here.

Good riddance if he's gone for good.

You've been around here about as long as I have, and I'm surprised you'd single out two Silverbacks who've brought a ton of quality non-political content to the bored, but you underscore my point about posters who take themselves too seriously and can't separate the decades-old ball busting from politically fueled hatred.

Folks keep mentioning dfs, but I believe the best ball format, especially on Underdog, is much more to blame for the decline in season-long "home league" type communities.

The bestball drafts start up some time in early May, probably a couple of weeks after the NFL draft ... folk can draft their asses off, use varying lineup contructs, etc

Set it, forget it - check in weekly to see where you stand in the big prize grab.

It's not my preferred method of pursuing this hobby, but I gotta tell ya, having 30 or so bestball squads ready to do battle come September ain't too shabby.

And it's a hell of a ride.

I still manage 3 season long teams in my longstanding money leagues, but I welcome the diversification of bestball and pick 'em.

I said I would never quit fantasy football. Pretty sure I quit like 2 years later. I'm out. I'm way too busy building things to worry about it any more. I wasted way too much time on it. It's fun, but I would rather become rich.
