I think so too, but it’s a tough field even without Sidakov

Ive never met Dake but know a guy that wrestled at Cornell during his time.  So I root for him.  Hope he gets that gold.  He should.

I lost to their current head coach 3 times (only got pinned once).  I root for all of team USA and hope he gets it as well but he seems to be a bit of a doosh TBH (and not just because he is anticovidvax).

The best “story” of USA wrestling though has gotta be Joe Rau.

But the US kinda sucks at Greco Roman so he’s probably a longshot to medal.

Spencer Lee has a good shot at winning in freestyle though and it’s cool to see him comeback after being pinned when going for his 4th NCAA title.

I realize I'm pooping on some sports in this thread but... just watched the BMX racing, and every heat is a "boat race."  Whoever gets in front out of the gate wins.  The track seems too narrow at the speeds they are going to allow passing.  Maybe it works at lower levels, but at this level, meh.

Men's judo heavyweight final was good, worth a watch if you find it.

Cheng and Hughes are about to play the German women's team in beach volleyball.  That should be a decent match.

Olympic Sportsmanship:

https://x.com/AfricanHub_/status/1819122551097831465 (photos at link)

Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped, thinking he had completed the race. A Spanish runner, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was happening, started shouting at the Kenyan to continue running. Mutai didn't know Spanish and didn't understand. Realizing what was taking place, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory.

A journalist asked Ivan, "Why did you do that?"

Ivan replied, "My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win."

The journalist insisted, "But why did you let the Kenyan win?"

Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his."

The journalist insisted again, "But you could have won!"

Ivan looked at him and replied, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor in that medal? What would my mother think of that?"

Awesome heartwarming story. I wish more people were like this.

I was really shocked but cheered when Netherlands beat the United States in the mixed relay race.

I don’t know why you would cheer against the US, but that was impressive.  Apparently she will be racing Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the 400 hurdles

I’m going to be honest, it was so surprising that anyone could defeat us, let alone a someone from the Netherlands. It was amazing to see her sprint from the back to overtake the runners in front of her and finish first. In all my years I can’t recall seeing a win like that. Watch the last minute of the video I posted. You’ll see.

ETA,

No, I have seen wins like that before. A person will lead a race but fall off near the end because they run out of steam.

What? The whole world would know he didn't deserve the victory. It would be embarrassing to accept the victory. Even a dooshbag  couldn't take joy in getting that type of victory.

That whole bullshlt line of "dreaming of havimg a community to push each other to win" was just that. Bullshlt.

If that guy could have passed the kenyon  while the kenyon was still running and trying to win he would have simply passed him by and claimed victory.

Joker and Alcaraz battling for Gold. Joker is a dweeb but pulling for him to take out the young gun.

1st set tie breaker.

Golf also coming down to the wire. Scottie on fire. Only complaint with Peacock is the app through my TV / cable provider is slow as shet to change. Jumping between coverage of events isn’t good.

Wrestling starts tomorrow!

For the women, we’ll have gold medal favorite Amit Elor (technically unseeded because their seeding system is stupid), who will have the #1 seed that she pinned in 40 seconds last time they wrestled.

In Greco Roman we’ll have heavyweight Adam Coon, who graduated from Michigan with a degree in aerospace engineering, and had previously been signed by the Tennessee Titans.  Unfortunately he got a tough draw and will also have the #1 seed, and if he manages to win that he’ll have Mijain Lopez of Cuba, who already has 4 (no that is not a typo) Olympic gold medals .

I thought the foot over the line won first, but I guess the rules have changed. It was crazy close.
I watched it last night and thought, for all the jumping around Lyles did before the race, he should've won.

Defending world champion Stevan Micic representing Serbia (but from Indiana/university of Michigan) has withdrawn from freestyle wrestling 57kg.  This makes an easier path for Spencer Lee, perhaps best known outside of the wrestling world for his mom (an Olympic alternate herself in judo) breaking her glasses after he lost going for his 4th NCAA title.

Just turned on 68KG freestyle, they are in the quarterfinals.  Is that where Elor wrestles?

Yes.  If you watch the replay, her first match was the first one.   Not sure if she’s wrestled again yet, I’m a little behind

Yeah, it just ended and they mentioned her name as making the semis, which I presume is tomorrow at this point.  I must have just missed her.

Are the mods at FBG banning people if they are posting "spoilers" of winners?  I know in the past when I posted who won a contest, people cried and complained that their viewing was "ruined" and somehow lost posting abilities for a day or two...

Top 5 moment...well I'm going to say George Brett coming out of the dugout and Bobby Knight chucking the chair on the court have be on that list too.
