I used to be for the death penalty, but now I oppose it.  Cases like this are part of the reason, although Rolling Stone is so Leftie, it's hard to tell how accurate it is.

But in the general sense, I don't think the government should be in the business of killing it's citizens, especially in the larger sense that I believe the government is generally incompetent at most things.

I've actually  been following this case pretty closely.  The evidence is very strong for guilt here.  The "new" evidence isn't new.  The big reveal was that his DNA wasn't on the knife used to kill the victim.  This turned out to be a falsehood.  It's true they couldn't find any but that's because the knife had been contaminated with the DNA of people who worked the original trial.  Even the defense's own expert witness testified that he couldn't say that Williams' DNA WASN'T on the knife, just that there were multiple DNA samples.  That's unfortunate but the conviction didn't rely on DNA to begin with.  The other evidence was sufficient to convict and sentence him to death.  Additionally, a previous governor had appointed a special panel of judges to look in to the case and, after SIX years, they still hadn't come to a conclusion.  The current governor said enough is enough and disbanded that commission, and I agree with that decision.  You should be able to form a conclusion after six years absent some new revelation about the crime.  Neither the defense or the people up in arms over this case have refuted one piece of evidence that actually tied Williams to the crime, such as all the victims belongings being found in his car, the FACT that he sold the victim's husband's laptop a day or two after the crime was committed, etc.....This case is only "controversial" due to the activists using it to push their agenda. 

To Jerry's point - I would rather we come up with a new standard of guilt for capital cases.  I've said this before.  I think the standard should be "beyond ALL doubt" instead of "beyond reasonable doubt."  That would also allow us to expedite the execution of the sentence.  However, absent that I'm ok with the current process although I'd still be in favor of expediting executing the sentence.  I don't believe in abolishing the death penalty.  There are simply some cases where it is an appropriate punishment.

On another note, there was another execution tonight.  In Texas.  Good riddance to both of them.

At first I thought this was bullshitt but the more I read it the more it seems correct. The media is making it out to be that he was innocent but there was more than enough evidence to prove he did it.  The cops fuckedd up the chain of evidence for NOW. For the time they followed procedure. I do not feel bad about this one.

I was always for the death penalty to be honest. I grew up right down the road from old sparky in Ga. I somewhat changed my view after I believe GA killed an innocent man a few years back. He was supposed to have beaten his wife to death with a shotgun but they never found the shotgun and he had NO blood splatter evidence when they arrested him hours later. There is ZERO chance this could happen. If he beat her to death with a shotgun there is no chance he could fully get rid of every single spec of blood. I have a friend who was an investigator for the GBI and when I asked her about the chances of this happening she said there is no chance. That even when people clean themselves after a murder like that they ALWAYS miss spots. Especially when you are talking about beating someone to death

Yes he did.  Wisconsin handles the death penalty a bit differently is all.  Instead of seeking that as an officvial sentence then demanding decades of appeals they just convict ,sentence to a long term, and then turn the guy lose in the general population at their prisons.  The execution is then carried out by the prisoners, as it was with Dahmer.  Really it is the most effcient system other than Texas' which is if you are guilty, black, retgarded or of low intelligence, and have no money they execute you on the day of trial whether a verdict has been reached yet or not.

So how would that work?  If you convict beyond reasonable doubt but say there's some doubt as to why you can't fry the person, then there is SOME doubt.  If you have some doubt, then you're saying you're not convinced.  If you're not convinced, then you can't convict.

Jury: "Oh yeah, we're convinced they're guilty".

Judge: "Ok, thanks.  Death penalty".

Jury: "Well, wait...."

Everyone else: "Huh?"

Unrelated but tangential, Japan just acquitted the man who was the world's longest sitting death row inmate until he was released and granted a new trial about 10 years ago.  Dude spent about 46 years on death row due to corrupt cops.  I found out reading about this case that Japan has a 99% conviction rate.  Anyone who thinks our system is focked up should read up on theirs.
