Speculation is that it was caused by a "bird strike" but I don't see how that could prevent the landing gear from deploying (which is what happened).

Seems like the pilot would have picked a landing spot that didn't have a big focking wall to smash into at the end.

I did read somewhere the pilot was aware the landing gear did not deploy. He's no Sully. Should have landed in the ocean parallel to the shore in shallow water.

You can manually deploy the landing gear on that plane if electronics fail. If he knew the landing gear wasn't deployed then he should of burned off the fuel and attempted a water landing.

Something doesn't add up.

Well Putin just shot down a passenger jet and Jong Un is his good buddy now… probably unrelated but odd timing

Don’t make excuses for your pigeon friends.  They did this.

Interestingly, my brother was working ESG for the Air Force in Jap when another KAL passenger plane was shot down by the Ruskies.

Years later, he told me he was the first one to 'witness' that, but he was disallowed from even acknowledging that the US had been looking in that area.

One of the reasons I don't believe those Malaysian planes just vanished.

It was one and the pilot flew it out over the Indian Ocean until it ran out of fuel and crashed.

It was likely a catastrophic failure of the hydraulic systems like the Sioux City Iowa crash in 1989. In that one they lost all flight controls. In this one it looks like they lost the ability to lower their landing gear and just slid till it was going to stop. Just happened to be a wall in place that stopped it.

There are a lot of questions about this one. It's not as simple as the landing gear didn't come down.  We likely won't know much about the cause until the FDR/CVR are analyzed.

Yeah it’s awful. You’d be thinking too like jeez I hope we just end up in the grass or something, maybe a pond at worst. It’s not like they’d put a giant concrete wall up at the en

Awesome stuff, thanks for posting!

From this video seems like most likely scenario is the flight crew panicked?

As I noted above, we won't know much until the FDR/CVR are analyzed.  But there are some good questions.  As noted in the video, they SHOULD have been able to put down their landing gear.  They probably SHOULD have been able to take longer to formulate their plans.  Even with a normal landing the cockpit crew "brief" the landing which details exactly what they're going to do during the landing AND what they're going to do if something abnormal happens during the landing so everyone up there is on the same page and has a defined course of action.  When something abnormal does happen it's normal to take your time and figure out what happened and an appropriate response which usually starts with following one or more checklists.  Unless there was some reason to get that thing on the ground immediately there should have been more time in the air before attempting that landing.  Also, why did they alter their original runway decision to try to land in the opposite direction?  These are all questions it will be nice to have answers to.  Our NTSB should be sending representatives to help with the investigation.  That's SOP when an American built aircraft is involved in a crash.

The Korean airport did have an EMAS system in place but that system is predicated on the fact the planes landing gear will be down.

That made me chuckle.

(That explosion doesn't seem strong enough to take down a 110-story building: 9/11.)

Lived in this apartment complex and two stewardesses moved in, and of course I was going to fly those friendly sky’s. Threw a party one night with lots of food and spirits for them and all. One them says (36c) says ask us anything about being a stewardess. My good friend asks “Is it true that y’all bang the pilots?” Sky Angel: Yes. Other friend asks “Do those emergencies pamphlets have any relevance?” Sky Angel2: Yes. Do you know why they tell you to get into the crash position to put your head on your legs and hold them tight? Because your head will go directly into the seat ahead of you and will break your neck so you will die immediately.

Seriously??? Omg!!! :o

I didn't listen to the videos but recall hearing yesterday that they had already circled the airport due to the birds. They finally landed because the birds had cleared. Now, they're saying it was due to birds? I don't believe that story.

So do you ever respond to threads noting about all the deaths and the daily news about liberal run cities having dozens of murders on a daily basis?

No. You protect those cities and vote back in the idiots who run them. But this?!!! Omg!!!
