Thinking Eagles defense turns Mahomes over a couple times. And when the KC defense keys on Barkley, Hurts gets loose as well as Brown, Smith and Goedert.

Showboat 252 Posted February 10 This may be a dent in Mahomes quest for GOAT. I don't think Brady ever got blown out in a Super Bowl. Mahomes now has this effort as well as the loss to the Bucs that was not really competitive.
Ray_T 739 Posted February 10 this was an old fashioned curb stomping. the Iggles fully controlled the line of scrimmage and that has largely been the difference

Falcons super bowl would have been the closest, but of course, the goat brought his team back to win it, plus the goat is 1-0 vs Mahomes in super bowl matchup. In that Super Bowl, Tampa got to Mahomes rushing 4 guys, blitzing as well (because that's what Bowles does), but for the most part, 4 guys. Mahomes didn't have time to throw the ball because 1) the pass rush got in quickly and the WR's/Kelce were all practically double covered because 4 guys would go out and had 7 covering them. The only way to combat this from the Chiefs point of view back in 2020 was bring in an extra TE (which didn't happen until the 2nd half), keep the RB in, and basically run Hill deep and Kelce over the middle. The problem there was that the Bucs were still getting pressure and Mahomes was running around like a chicken without a head. This year, there was no Tyreek Hill to keep the secondary honest nor was there a competent blocking TE. The Chief's only resort was to keep the RB and Kelce in and force bad (and old), receivers, to try and beat the best pass defense in the NFL. The Chiefs never had a chance. That Pick-6 proved to be the nail in the coffin. After getting sacked on the first two plays, Mahomes gambled and lost. It was at that point the Chiefs quit. They knew they had no answers on offense or defense.

They knew they had no answers on offense or defense. I saw early that this would be a different game than the previous meeting between these two teams a couple years ago in the superbowl. one thing I noticed is that in the previous superbowl, the KC passrush pushed up a wall to the right side of Hurts, forcing him to run to the left. That was significant because Hurts is not nearly as effective rolling to the left as he is when he rolls to the right. in this game they were not able to do that. I'll call this the Barkley effect but it could just be better line play(or possibly a bit of both). My belief is that by playing that strategy in this game, it would make it harder for them to control Barkley at the LOS. so I noticed Hurts was rolling to the right on numerous occasions throughout the game. Something that rarely happened the previous time these teams met at Superbowl. so from that perspective, the Eagles had too much to contain. Chiefs elected to stop the ground game, and while a noble cause, and they were able to mostly contain him, they were not able to contain the rest of that offense. I was a bit surprised to see how badly the Chiefs line was manhandled in this game too. Normally the line has been pretty good. but that was the story. They gave Hurts the most outstanding player, but for me the unsung heros were the players on both sides of the line that won the battle in the trenches for Philly

It was really a talent issue; the Eagles were just a more complete team across the board. The most glaring issue in the game was at offensive tackle and that the Chiefs couldn't stop the 4-man pressure. That led to no receivers being open and Mahomes just really not being able to do much of anything. If the line was doing their job, the rest starts to take care of itself. So I'm kind of indifferent with what they do with Nagy

I think this was a key in the two losses Patriots had to the Giants. The Giants were generally able to pressure Brady with 4. The difference being that the Pats D was able to keep it close and Brady made enough plays to win if not for miraculous helmet catches and such.

Why didn't they use more 2 TE sets to block, why didn't they do more designed jet sweeps to Worthy or more screens?? They did absolutely nothing to slow down the Philly pass rush. It was the same formations over and over.

It was the same formations over and over. in the past, Mahomes has been able to step up his play to get away from the rush so I think if there was one fault it was that Reid believed in his guy. its also a case where if you use another TE to block, the other side can rush with another person so its not always as easy as that. but the 'chip' block from the TE or the RB as they leave to go out for a pass certainly could have been done more often to assist the Tackles. in the end, it was mostly an inability to protect Mahomes and solid coverage that really made the sledding tough for the KC offense. You also need to give credit to Philly. They had a good game plan and they executed.
