CA Governor Ordered Everyone RTO 4 Days a Week

Recommended Posts

Starting in July, Gov Newsom instructed all state employees to return to the office 4 days a week. Right now, some agencies are 2 WFH, some have 3 WFH days.

https://calmatters.org/politics/2025/03/california-employees-remote-work/

Many are piiissed. I truly wonder if the govt (state and federal) understand the far reaching impacts this can have on families. Everything increases for them with the return to work.

My BFF is a state employee and going back to work 4 day straight a week as a single mother will be challenging for her. Her take home is $3k/month. Half of that goes to rent. Now, she will need to have child care, gas will be well over $5/gallon in the summer months. Not to mention other expenses that come up.

So many people unhappy that our Gov just went and made this decision without considering the agencies themselves, or discussing it with anyone.

I couldn't imagine going into an office every day again.  It would royally suck.  Covid definitely spoiled me.  I'm also much more productive at home than in the office,

What did your BFF do prior to covid and wfh? I feel like many people made permanent adjustments (bigger house/apartment, nicer cars, etc)to lifestyle based on wfh being a permanent thing.

From the link, this was Newsom's explanation, which I don't necessarily agree with:

“In-person work makes us all stronger — period,” he said in a statement. “When we work together, collaboration improves, innovation thrives, and accountability increases. That means better service, better solutions, and better results for Californians, while still allowing flexibility.”

Currently in the office one day a week and its a nice mix.  Probably wouldnt like much more.  Office is in downtown detroit and i can see whoever the new mayor becomes pressuring Detroit businesses to bring their employees back full time for the sake of the restaurants etc downtown and more importantly, for the City of Detroit 1.5%  tax revenue.

She worked for the state, but was also married, her divorce started in 2021, maybe 2022 and she's STILL dealing with him. Her pay was a LOT less then, so she's been promoted. But still below the average for a sustainable wage.

It doesn't allow MUCH flexibility, IMO. One day from home, which maybe allows you to try and schedule doctors/dentist/school stuff if you have it and those things are closer to your house. I think it creates a work/like imbalance for a LOT of people for sure.

And the "collaboration" is false. Even in the office, people still meet via Teams/Zoom/whatever.

I've been WFH for over 15 years. My work is doing away with all remote workers that aren't in a hub location, so I will likely be laid off in the next year or so. Closest hub for me is 70 miles one way.

Can't believe I'm agreeing with this but if your employer says go to work, you go to work. They own the work culture.

PTO should be given  and used for personal needs. Where I worked it was 100% unquestioned time off except at critical times of need for the work we do.

Anyone who has has a full time job in any industry should factor in cost of child care before they go have a kid.

Last year we had to return to office and was pissed.

I was in the best shape of my life hitting the gym almost every day and it totally screwed up my workout schedule and golf game. Got a little too spoiled.  Still have Fridays at the gym office though. :)

I hate working from home.   Had to do it in April of 2020, everything was locked down.  Soon as I could, I got back to work.   Not a fan of working from home at all.

That sucks TNG.   Sorry to hear that

I love it when people talk about all the things they can get done in their personal lives instead of doing their job during work hours.

I used to be on Teams calls when another employee would join in with their 2 year old in their lap. Then the other chatty dopes would need to spend 5-10 minutes talking about the kid.

Some of us actually have work to do.

Please do not mistake my posting about this as agreeing with Gavin, or agreeing with my friend.

If I were asked to RTO 5 days a week to the local building I used to work in, I'd go. Asking me to commute 70 miles one way to "collaborate" via Teams meetings, meh. Not so much.

My point is that it affects the very working families that he claims to protect and want better for. It's not just about being in the office and scheduling appointments. Commutes are going to be terrible into Sacramento and other larger cities. Gas prices will drown families already struggling with other increased prices in food, insurance (if they can get it), as well as other living expenses, not to mention the work/life balance that a lot of industries claim to care about.

Seems like a series of unfortunate events. Hopefully it works out for her. Lotta love and sympathy for the good single moms out there.

Could be worse. Your friend could be a federal employee who has to go back to work 5 days a week. Or just laid off.

But I am curious.  What did these people do before this WFH madness?   How did they survive?

Probably a mix of whatever; going in 5 days a week. One friend I have WFH maybe 2 days a week, but not every week. The friend I referenced above was in office 5 days a week most of the time with the occasional WFH.

When covid hit tho, everyone went to WFH.

And, similar to other industries that aren't state/federal, the RTO has been slowly coming back to 5 days a week.

They had to know this was coming, too. Couldn't expect to WFH forever.

WFH is a private sector benefit, if you work for the government you need to be in an office imo.

I feel like a lot of people have become pansies after covid.  Its true.

At the same if you can work from home efficiently then why do many places just require 2 or 3 days out of the week?  You can either work from home or not.  Either have your employees work from home or dont.  I can understand certain meetings or events will need people to all attend in person.  But seems goofy to say hey you need to come in 2 out of 5 days.  I could be missing something as to why they need to do it that way.  If so correct me.

I have a hard time believing that people are more productive from home.  a real hard time.  Yes, I've done both.

Is it hard to find a more accommodating job with similar pay? I feel like an employer should be able to instruct their employees how they wish for them to work. If you don't like it, there are alternative options.

:dunno:

That’s tough, how about the single mother working six days a week, making 1000 less, needs babysitting care, gas, food.   But the prices are so high, welcome to the lives of many many people in this world.

I’m glad to see you agree that the US under trump will be a rough two years, probably another made up mandemic, more homeless people, and more businesses going down, sad.

Social skills will diminish.   Sit home all day with your cat.  Scroll your facebook looking at peoples lives you dont care about.  And if its a God send you can work from home because you have young kids then you probably arent socializing on the weekends.

An even weirder world incoming.

Really depends on your job, right?   Obviously if you're a truck driver, a plumber or a surgeon you're not working from home.  But if you have a desk job where your interactions are global then why the need to go to the office?
