What was your favorite rock station growing up ?

Recommended Posts

Early years WAPP 103.5 in NY then K-Rock 92.3 where Howard Stern started.

I can’t tell you last time I listened to music on the actual radio.

Went back and forth between KLOS and KMET, two legendary rock stations in LA back in the day.

102.7 WEBN.

They are still around, but its been over 15 years since I last listened to FM radio

That would probably be the ONLY rock-ish FM station in sunny Wilkes Barre, PA - 98.5 WKRZ.  Looked it up, they are still around, called "contemporary".

Prior to that, there was an AM station WILK.  It also still exists, news station

On a clear day with the right antenna we could get a smattering of the two big rock stations from Philly -- WMMR (93.3) and WYSP (94.1).

MMR is still a rock station (at least as of a couple years ago). YSP is sister station to K-Rock as is/was DC 101. I did a lot of traveling back in the day (driving) and I was able to drive from NYC area to mid Virginia on those three stations (about 6 hours of driving) and from there was crap shoot or pop in the CDs.

Good times.

99.1 WHFS

This was the yardstick I used when making my picks in the 90s alt draft.  If it was played on that station, then it was eligible.

Wasn't 104.5 the Alt Rock station there?

Yeah that one wasn’t bad either but IIRC it wasn’t around all that long

106.3 WHTG

92.3 and 102.7 were classic rock, 106.3 was the Alt rock

Yes 92 and 102 were classic Rock in NY. Never heard of 106.3 - where was that out of ?

No Y100?

According to the internet that station started in 1993.  I was 26, living in Phoenix, and got married that year.

Based on his draft he probably loved Y100

Why, did they play actual music?  For the reference of others, Gutter said the following song was better than every song in my draft, the first three songs of which were Pearl Jam: Jeremy, Rage Against the Machine:  Killing in the Name; and Tool: Sober

If you agree with Gutter, for the love of God, don't try to teach your kids music.  Hire a trained professional.

I don't think I could ever give up satellite radio, but I have fond memories of road trips back in the day and hitting the scan button to find local stations in different areas of the country.

Not growing up but when I heart radio first came out I listened to a killer station from CA - don’t remember where you are in CA - this was San Diego. Think it was 98.8 ? Rock station - not metal and not classic rock. Good ole Rock station.

I forget the call letters, but the DJ was a guy named Mike Scott. His show was where you could call in with requests, so you got to hear stuff not on the DJ play list. This would in the early 70s.

Now people are just throwing together combinations of letters.  No way these are real stations. <_<
