Julius Thomas

Recommended Posts

Love him this year and curious where he should be drafted? I will pass on him in second but have an early 3rd round pick. Is that too early? Would you rather have jt or cobb? v/jax? allen? elligton? martin? stacy? etc.

its a 12 man league and hall point ppr

Sorry but I think that's to high . After Graham goes either in the first or second round , I won't look at te until at least round 5 or 6 .

Disagree. He should go in rounds 3-4, minimum.

I would take him early third. I think he outscores Graham this year and I like him over a healthy Gronk! Yeah I said that. I think we have yet to see his ceiling and more targets go his way with decker gone...remember..Peyton ....loves...his ..TEs

We will never see a healthy Gronk

i forgot what a healthy gronk looks like but do know he is a game changer. i just see thomas' red zone targets go up because pretty boy decker is gone and they were supposedly getting creative with thomas' routes and positioning. i just need to talk myself into drafting him over the likes of v-jax, allen, cruz and the others who will get picked in the third.

love me some gronk but nervous about how many games you can get out of him

easy 3rd rounder. If you count WRs and TEs together, he's still top 10, 15 at worst. That dictates 3rd rounder...

I know I'm behind the Times, but this is the first year I'm willing to take a TE high. If the right guy falls to me (Thomas) in the 3rd, I'll take him. Easier to find a WR to fill out a starting spot than a TE.

A few devil's advocate arguments, since it's a slow day at work:

1. Thomas didn't get an elite number of targets last year. He only averaged 6.4/game, which put him around 10th.

2. He caught a really high percentage of those targets: 65/90, for 72%. That's awesome. It also might be unsustainable. Last season, no TE with more than 100 targets caught greater than 68% of them, with several strong options like Witten and Olsen only catching 65%.

3. Peyton probably isn't going to throw 50+ TDs again, so it may be hard for Thomas to get 12 TDs again. When looking just at yardage, he was a very good TE option, but maybe not 3rd round good.

These risks are all somewhat mitigated by Decker leaving. I don't know that anyone expects 5'11" Sanders to replicate 6'3" Decker's role and numbers this season, so there's potential for Thomas to see a higher volume of targets both overall and in the red zone.

Basically, if you think Thomas can climb to 7.5-8 targets/game--a mark only Graham, Cameron, and Gronk hit last year, admittedly--he's probably worth that 3rd rounder. The same could be said if you think Peyton will once again completely destroy the universe and be so good as to keep Thomas's catch rate above 70%.

playing devils advocate to your devils advocate, 2 and 3 are not fully steeped in logic...reason he caught a high % has a little something to do with his qb. And that doesn't change this year. As for #3, sure 50 is not likely, but if you think he comes back down to 33 or something, you're mistaken. It is peyton manning, he has an amazing arsenal of weapons, and the league instills new rules every year making it easier for the offense to operate. Defensing holding, hands to the face, btlahblahblah. I fully expect 40+ easily, and if he surpassed 50 no one would blink an eye. The denver O is poised to throw up video game type stats again, believe that...

If they keep calling defensive holding and illegal contact in the regular season the way they are in preseason, Manning may throw for 65 TDs this year.

seems to be the new focus this year. I think they'll call offensive PI a bit more too, but that is not going to nearly have the same impact as the stuff they'll call on Ds, there's going to be like 10 qbs that might hit 40tds. And for big fast TEs, I think the rules will benefit even more than WRs. THose LBs will be practically useless in stopping a JT type guy from getting loose, and once he has a head of steam there aren't too many safeties that will be able to brink him down. That's why I'm really big on Graham too, like take him at 1.05 high...gonna be unstoppable. I also expect the middle of the road TEs to produce significantly higher tbh, at least the speedy athletic ones...

Managed to snag him in 3 of 6 leagues. Saved me in two of them today. He will have off-weeks, but should be a beast if healthy.

Laughed at my buddy for taking him in the 1st round. He's now beating me by 20 when me and him were close. o.0

Eat my crow now.

He is single-handedly winning one of my games today; 27 of my 60 points in a TD-heavy non-PPR with bonuses. I went from getting biotch-slapped to needing 3 points from Calvin tomorrow.

This was an autodraft which I maneuvered my preferences to grab him at 3.7 of a 12-teamer.

Missed him by a few draft spots in the league below. Got him at 3.10 in my super flex $ league. Still need 14 from Stafford and Floyd though.

This guy gets the opposite of a FU from me tonight. I just may pull off a tremendous come from behind and win! And despite my having started Foles and my opponent having Ryan.

vbd vbd vbd...

anyone that gets stuck on, 'I don't take TEs early, hurrdurrdurr,' 'TE is so deep, I'll wait till last round' hurr durrdurr...will suffer the cosequences. Sure I loved Bennett where he was going and he will be huge value, but TE is such a crap shoot that most of those guys you're 'high' on for late picks will be utterly inconsistent, and the 700/6 stats they throw up at the end of the year won't reflect the zeros they throw up for a 1/4 of the games palyed. The youngin in KC everyone was super high on, some saying he'll be this year's JT. Yeah good luck with that. Dude is Washington hurt already, and even if he wasn't, he doesn't play with peyton manning. ETCETCETC. Jimmy Graham and JT will pay their value 5 times over by end of year, and if Gronk stays healthy he too. All worthy of early picks, and JT will likely be the best value of the draft in the 3rd round. It's a new age of NFL play bros, where the rules instilled as well as the overly atheletic, ex basketball player type TEs are basically unstoppable. Team these types of beasts up with stud qbs like brees and manning, and coaches that consciously develop plays to exploit these matchup and these guys will absolutely go nuts...

Honestly, I don't even really expect him to throw up a few duds. Maybe the team as a whole might have 1 dud game, 2 at most. Otherwise, broncos will average 30+ points a game, and JT will be at the forefront of those points being scored. believe it...

not really a 'told you so' guy, nor a prediction guy, and my comments in this thread were not so much, 'I predict julius' blahblah, but was mega bullish on JT. Saying he'll pay his value 5 times over at his draft position and that he'll be at the forefront of the scoring in Denver is slightly going out on a limb here. Regardless, glad I subscribe to vbd and not some 'rb-rb' or no te till the 9th jibberish...

I'm that guy who always waits for a TE... but I couldn't pass up Julius Thomas in the early 3rd.

I consider him a near lock for top 3 TE, and very possibly #1. The point difference comparison game meant I had no choice but to draft him.
