Most livable cities in the world

Recommended Posts

If youre planning visits to Australia or Canada any time soon, be careful you may not want to come back. At least, thats according to a major survey of the most livable cities in the world, in which those countries placed eight of the top 10. Meanwhile, in Outside Magazines survey, Minnesota cities were voted two of the three most livable cities in the U.S.

For the fourth year in a row, Melbourne, Australia was named the worlds most livable city in the Economist Intelligence Unit survey. It ranks 140 cities using 30 livability factors across five main categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

As the Economist study says, Those that score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density. Of the top seven cities, six are in either Australia or Canada, with only Vienna, Austria getting in the way at No. 2. Melbourne earned a total score of 97.5, with 100 being the maximum.

The report notes that the world is a slightly less livable place these days in the last 12 months, the global liveability score has dropped .22 points to 75.33. Whats the least livable city of the 140? No surprise here: Damascus, Syria, with a score of 30.5.

Outside Magazine mixed math and democracy in determining the most livable cities in the U.S., with readers picking Duluth, Minnesota No. 1; Provo, Utah No. 2; and Minneapolis No. 3. However, the magazine also came up with an O-Score to determine livability, including such factors as bike shops, miles of trails, unemployment rates, and median incomes. The top O-Score went to Boulder, Colorado, which scored 91 of 100 but finished 10th among readers.

Something tells me they didn't take into account the 40 below winters.

I liked Duluth quite a bit, though I never lived there. Minneapolis is ok I suppose. There's plenty of nice things about it but I thought it was kinda boring

Well, it is 'Outside Magazine' that did the survey and they are based out of Iowa. :dunno:

exactly.

atlanta ga has the most people moving here than any other city in the united states 5 years in a row now.

i've been told that australia is wonderful.

i'd like to visit.

(i've read though that a lot of people moved there from s. africa when apartheid ended.)

You absolutely could not pay me to step foot on Australian soil. That whole country is teeming with deadly animals, insects and snakes and death traps of nature. Terrifying to say the least, huge venomous spiders that crawl under toilet seats. NOPE! I'm shocked here's anyone even alive there.

Duluth and Minneapolis? WTF

St. Paul is much better and safer than Minneapolis. I do not like Minneapolis at all, it is kind of a sh!thole.

I spend a lot of time in Duluth and it is a nice place to visit for the 6 weeks of summer but the winters are brutal. It is cold and wet and trying to negotiate that damn hill in the ice no thank you.

That isn't accurate, what would bring people to Atlanta?

I just googled it, and there are varying results depending on the source, but CNN had Austin being number one and houston #2. Atlanta wasn't in the top ten

Minnesota is a great place to live. Who cares if it gets cold in the winter. Dress in layers and drink and it's totally tolerable. People embrace the winter here....ice fishing, x-country skiing, outdoor hockey. Better than sitting inside watching bad TV....and better than dealing with hurricanes and earthquakes.

School systems are very good in suburban Minny. Lots of good jobs. Educated workforce. A good art scene. Hundreds of miles of hiking/bike paths. Good parks. Great fishing.

Not a lot for tourists here. It is kinda boring in that regard. But it's a very nice place to live and raise a family. :dunno:

Peenie, you are crazy. Atlanta is a hole, and horribly unlivable. Horrible traffic, and if you don't enjoy dodging bullets, you have to live far away and commute.

That's what I was thinking, even though I live here, houston sucks because of the heat and traffic, but with the oil and gas industry, it's booming. What kind of industries is heading to Atlanta?

I grew up in Atlanta. Suburban sprawl at its worst. The city itself is pretty dead. The only redeeming thing is the cost of living.

Seattle, Portland, Tempe, Denver, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Boulder, Asheville, Charlotte, Charleston, Savannah, Austin. All cities I'd consider moving too (from Raleigh) either because I visted and liked, or seem to have a positive reputation.

I love visiting Philly, NYC, Chicago, New Orleans, Atlanta and L.A. but wouldn't want to live there for some reason.

well i don't live in altanta proper, but georgia in general is a great place to live.

i will find the statistics that prove people come to the atlanta metropolitan area the most.

i certainly didn't make that fact up by myself.

You do realize the Jets were in NJ an hour ago when you thought the place sukked, right?

Jeebus, I hope Geno doesn't compliment your sweater vest. He will instantly become Lebron 2.0.

oh really??

  • Median income: $66,300
  • Median home price: $166,000
  • Home price growth forecast : 5.3%

Even though it was hit hard by the recession, Atlanta has claimed the top spot on Penske's list for four years running. Home to Coca-Cola, Home Depot and roughly a dozen other Fortune 500 companies, the city offers a range of job opportunities. And the cost of living is pretty cheap -- less than half the cost of Manhattan -- with much warmer weather (well... except for this winter).

where did i get this information: cnn money

but there's more!

1. Atlanta

For the third year in a row, Atlanta was the country's most popular place to move last year. A diverse city with many cultural attractions, residents enjoy the perks of big cities like New York and Chicago without the sub-freezing temperatures. Atlanta is home to the world's largest aquarium, numerous critically acclaimed restaurants and a thriving cultural scene. For a city as in-demand as Atlanta, homes are affordable, with a median home sale price of $200,100.

and this comes from: cbs

somebody stop me!

Atlanta, Georgia

Between a relatively low cost of living (less than half of what Manhattan's is) and dozens of Fortune 500 companies to offer jobs in the area, it's no wonder Atlanta has made this list four years running.

I agree that LA and urban NJ suck. But there are plenty of other cities that are nicer than Atlanta IMO.

Where have you lived to compare to Atl? I lived in Michigan a couple years, so I know sucky first hand.

The cost of living is great. And there are good restaurants, similar to other cities its size. That's about it.

To be fair, I don't like any cities very much.

Right. It is affordable. But there are other affordable areas that are nicer. Maybe not big cities, I guess.

When I was a kid in the 70's, Orlando was one of finest cities anyone would want to live. Small, quiet, and peaceful. Today it's congested, crime-ridden and packed with scum.

I'm 6th generation Orlando dating back to 1800's, but hope my daughter moves to somewhere better when she grows up. Perhaps Minnesota...
