Big Blue 06 195 Posted July 21, 2016 Vlookup. Pretty basic but valuable. First thing I thought of. I use that and Concantenate very frequently. Also, a bit simpler: Text to Column and Sort. Easier functions but valuable as well.
mighty_thor 115 Posted July 21, 2016 Give them data for a simple bidded project like building a shed. Give them different contractors bids. Joe bid $100 square feet for walls $200 sf for a roof, $50 sf for concrete foundation. Bill bid .... Give them the data for the shed. Roof will be 90 sf, walls 200 sf.... Then have them put all the data in a spreadsheet that calculates the total price of each bid and have them sort the contractors by lowest total price. Then give them a number that represents your budget and have them calculate the percent above or below your budget of each bid. have them calculate the average bid price. Have them calculate the percent of cost of each item as compared to the total cost for each contractor (i.e. Joe's walls cost x percent of his total cost). KSB2424 3,083 Posted July 21, 2016 ...I guess I don't really know how to use Excel, geesh. Vlookup? (ctrl+F) Just google or even better youtube it. You can learn pretty much anything for free on the internet. Filtering Sorting Charts and Graphs V and H Lookups Pivot Tables SumIF's Formulas in a cell like adding-subtracting-multiplying-dividing multiple cells Concatenation Freeze and unfreeze panes text to columns and other formatting Macros (I personally don't use this but want too) Stuff like that is all you need to do 99% of most anything.
nobody 2,043 Posted July 21, 2016 ...I guess I don't really know how to use Excel, geesh. Vlookup? (ctrl+F) 90% of the stuff in this thread isn't core excel basics. Naomi is probably interviewing for some assistant position where they need her to create excel sheets for meeting signups and maintain directories and stuff like that. Without the context of why she's asking the question, it's hard to say what skills you would need, but this stuff is for fairly advanced data manipulation. titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted July 22, 2016 My first job out of school I was assigned to go through a massive spreadsheet and add , TN into each address field. My boss thought it has to be done one at a time. He told me I had two days. I did it in three minutes and screwed around online for a day and a half, and then got kudos for finishing so quickly.
