I've mentioned it before, my Grandfather landed on the beach that day---hours after the initial fighting and the line had moved he said about 400-800 yards back, but he was there and ready to do his duty, so for that he's still the greatest American I've ever known.

I just can't imagine coming up in later waves and just seeing the amount of dead as you approach the beach and ready yourself to exit the boat to join...  I can't imagine how many people though that they were going to be dying very soon...

The bravery was incredible.  If I had a time machine I would tell them to turn around. I’d let them know that them and their ancestors and their off spring will be called racists and bigots. I’d tell them to go home and start families. I’d also let them know that their family farm will get taken by the bank and their factory jobs will be shipped overseas for cheap labor and no regulations. Also a kid over there named George Soros that you save from the Nazis will work , and succeed, to rip apart our country.

These are two nations that tried to destroy our and other free nations ways of life not too long ago.

We are now partners. We exchange goods. We travel freely in these countries and they in ours. We work for and with their businesses and they ours. We have agreed to defend each other. On and on. 

It’s astonishing and something that should be admired and the world is undoubtably in a much better place for this.

Thanks for creating this thread.  I saw a great documentary on Sunday about D-Day.  The scale of that invasion is almost unimaginable.  Lots went wrong too.  The transport boats were released too far from shore and almost all of them took on water and sank.  Imagine having to swim 50 yards to shore while wearing 25-40 pounds of equipment - keeping your rifle above water and hearing bullets wiz past your head.  Brutal.  My Uncle was one of those guys.  He never talked about it.

One of my grandfathers was much the same. Landed a couple days after the initial wave. Was shot twice in France. He never talked about this and one of my earliest memories of him was him getting angry that someone was watching MASH.

He told me he was upset by the laugh track IIRC and didn’t want it on the TV and wanted no part of war as entertainment.

This is exactly my point. What we did after WWII was exactly the right move. Without the steps we took they would not be our partners. Took amazing grace, courage and leadership to do this.
