CantTouchThis 23 Posted April 28, 2010 People who say Metallica hasn't put out a good album in 25 years, have you listened to Death Magnetic? It's one of their most fan and critically acclaimed albums, it's very near the same level as their big albums. Also, though MOP is their best album, i think #2 is Justice, and #3 is a tie between Lighting and the Black album. A lot of people don't like the Black album because that is when they "sold out", but it is all golden, imo. My Friend Misery might be my favorite Metallica song... I would be tempted to say Justice is their best album, the multi-layered complexity of each song on that album really put Metallica on another level, imo. It really showed they are much more than just a fast thrash band. I think it's funny that Metallica is my favorite band of all-time, yet i don't really like thrash-metal. My favorite songs by them are One, The Unforgiven, MFM, Fade to Black, ..And Justice for all, MOP, Sanitarium(Welcome Home); and their epic instrumentals in Call of the Ktulu, Orion, To Live is To Die, and Suicide and Redemption. Really only one is considered to be truly Thrash(MOP). As far as pure quality of music goes, no one beats Metallica. As good as their more well known songs are, there are a huge number of more obscure songs by them that are insanely good. Whether or not you like Metallica, to not put them in the top 5 best all-time American bands is just...dumb. Other than maybe the Eagles(who i am not a huge fan of, but they have too many big hits to ignore), they are probably the most influential American band of all-time. I think the top 5 are... Metallica Van Halen The Eagles Chicago Aerosmith/GNR You could argue bands like Nirvana and Fleetwood. Those aren't my favorite bands(cept for Tallica, and to a lesser extent Van Halen), but i recognize those as the top American bands of all-time. I mean, if everyone listed their top 5 fav bands, you would probably have a difference list for every reply.

Eagles Green 34 Posted April 28, 2010 Eh. I guess, was never a fan, but they were pretty highly influential. Oh, I think they are awful. And only 1 of those turds actually surfed too......How gay is that? But their harmonies are insanely good and their influence in music can't be denied. mobb_deep 920 Posted April 28, 2010 Are you really this retarded? Top 5 US bands of ALL TIME. Who the fock cares you your favorite bands are? This is ALL TIME US BANDS. I listen to bands most people haven't heard of too, but I sure as sh!t wouldn't consider them all time greats just because I like them. I'll agree with you on the Metallica shitty album statement. But those 3 (Kill em all, Master, Lightning) are 3 of the most influential albums of all time. And if Primus' bassist was so focking good, why did Metallica shoot Claypool down when he tried out for them? FACE This thread has reached 2 pages and you are the only one to list any of those bands. So I guess we're all wrong......you're right. Our bad. Top 5: Metallica Pinback The Dead Yo la tengo The Beach Boys Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs Ramones Explosions in the Sky Skynrd The Flaming Lips Yup, that's the list.......Thanks Oops. Edit to add. We can all go see one of the top 5 bands of all time on tour right now!!!!!! Yo La Tengo Tour Schedule!!! Next "big" venue......The Henry Miller Library. Major band.....Top 5 for sure Alright, you're obviously a little thick, so I'll spell this out a little slower for you... My opinion of the top bands all time aren't going to be the same as yours or anyone else's. Good music is completely subjective. This is like you saying Da Vinci and Van Gogh are two of the best painters all time because they died over 100 years ago and everyone knows who they are. But Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney and Jasper Johns aren't because they're either still alive or not known to every idiot who watched the Thomas Crown Affair. Your argument holds no weight. PS. The Flaming Lips have won 3 Grammys and nominated for 3 more. How many Grammys have the Beach Boys or Dead won? Oh that's right, 0. Even using your logic that obviously makes the Flaming Lips more of a top band right?
JackARoot 2 Posted April 28, 2010 Top 5 really depends on your taste ... but here's a few that I haven't seen mentioned yet: The Mothers of Invention Talking Heads The Cars

Even using your logic that obviously makes the Flaming Lips more of a top band right? Relax, I like the Flaming Lips. And I loathe the Dead. But maybe we have different opinions of this thread, not music. I am thinking it's asking for all time US bands, as if we could take a poll from the entire population and add in facts like ticket sales, record sales, awards won, and longevity. If that was at all possible, where do you think Yo La tengo would rank? top 8,000 maybe. And the Da Vince Van Gogh argument is pretty lame, especially since art is 99.99% subjective. But with you're rationale, you would probably answer that Van Gogh isn't a top 5 artist of all time. But the kid that sat next to you in 1st grade, who was a beast in macroni art, should make the list.
Rusty Syringes 478 Posted April 28, 2010 It's hard to argue w/ that list. I agree, although Journey, for example, is way too high. I'm glad to see The Replacements on the list. I think X belongs there, as does the Dead Kennedys and some other early 1980s punk bands that puts some speed into the genre.

I read that as what US bands made (make) the best music. Just like art, it's completely subjective. I do think Van Gogh was one of the top 10 (maybe 5) artists of all time. But I also think Jasper Johns is. Both have sold paintings for 100 million, but I'd guess maybe 2 out of every 10 people who don't follow art closely know who Jasper Johns is, while every single one knows who Van Gogh is. Moral of the story, we both like better music than most everyone else here!

Frank M 181 Posted April 29, 2010 The next person that says a rap group will get punched in the face. A 'Band' must consist of actual musical instruments that are played by the band memebers. Rap/Hip hop has it's place in music, but those groups aint no band. The Beastie Boys played all their own instruments and were arguably very influential. nzoner 937 Posted April 29, 2010 Not shocking at all,the problem with bands like Styx,ZZ top,Journey,REO Speedwagon,Foreigner etc. is that they all sold out in the 80's for commercial BS that got played to death.Go back and check out those bands' 70's catalogs and B-sides and you will find a fantastic body of work. kutulu 1,680 Posted April 29, 2010 Rank Metallica Albums: MOP Ride the Lightning Justice Death Magnetic Kill em All Garage Inc Black The rest ......... METALLICA's 1986 LP "Master of Puppets" has been named the "best heavy metal album of all time" in a poll for musicians' web site MusicRadar.com. With the results released on International Noise Awareness Day, MusicRadar.com teamed up with Metal Hammer, the U.K.'s best-selling heavy metal magazine, to create a countdown of the ultimate headbanging records. The online poll attracted over 6,000 votes from musicians and metal enthusiasts. With a whopping 20% of total votes, "Master of Puppets" remains as popular today as when it was released in March 1986. Acclaimed by fans and critics alike, the album went multi-platinum, going on to sell over six million copies in the U.S. alone, despite receiving no radio airplay, with no single or music video to accompany it. METALLICA's grip on the heavy metal scene is evident throughout the chart, with four of their albums appearing in the MusicRadar.com top 25. Today, the band continues to perform sold-out shows across the globe, with their music regularly appearing in best-selling videogames, including Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The U.S. band beat legendary U.K. metal act IRON MAIDEN's 1982 album "The Number of the Beast" into second spot, with GUNS N' ROSES' "Appetite for Destruction" in third. Other acts in the top ten include Birmingham's BLACK SABBATH and AC/DC — who also soundtracked this week's blockbuster movie release, "Iron Man 2". Mike Goldsmith, Editor-in-Chief of MusicRadar.com, said: "Whether it's AC/DC soundtracking 'Iron Man 2', RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE getting the Christmas No. 1 or IRON MAIDEN winning a Brit, heavy metal is no longer an underground concern. Over 6,000 musicians and metalheads agree and have voted in what is MusicRadar.com's most popular poll yet. It's another award for METALLICA's thrash masterpiece and is the perfect soundtrack for International Noise Awareness Day. Turn it up!" Alexander Milas, Editor of Metal Hammer, added, "This is a thrilling result — but it will come as no surprise to long time fans, as METALLICA's 'Master of Puppets' is an absolute landmark for our beloved genre. Ranging from the crushing and frenetic 'Battery' to the stately elegance of 'Orion', 'Master of Puppets' still explodes with the sweat-soaked denim of the band's more humble beginnings. Should the god-like IRON MAIDEN have won the poll? Are GUNS N' ROSES really heavy metal? Debates like these will rage forever on, and it's a testament to the intelligence and incredible passion of metalheads around the globe." MusicRadar.com's "Best Heavy Metal Albums Of All Time": 01. METALLICA - Master of Puppets (1986) 02. IRON MAIDEN - The Number of the Beast (1982) 03. GUNS N' ROSES - Appetite for Destruction (1987) 04. METALLICA - Ride the Lightning (1984) 05.
